INCREDIBLE Fire-Bellied Toad Island Paludarium with Waterfalls

Two years later and I'm finally back with an updated version of the fire-bellied toad paludarium! Although the original one was great, I've improved a lot in the past two years and I can do better these days. That said, this one will serve as the toad's forever home.
If you have the opportunity to keep these toads (preferably captive-bred specimens), I highly recommend housing them in a proper paludarium. It certainly doesn't have to be this elaborate, but trust me, the behaviors you'll witness are well worth the effort and money involved. These toads are absolute characters and are so much more personable in a proper setup.
Anyway, enjoy the video and let me know what you thought about the build!
Plant List:
Anubias barteri 'Nana'
Anubias minima 'Variegated'
Anubias nana 'Petite'
Bichetii Grass (Chlorophytum laxum)

Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Brown'
Dragon's Tongue (Hemigraphis repanda)
Java Moss (Vesicularia dubyana)
Mini Bolbitis (Bolbitis difformis 'Mini')
Nerve Plant (Fittonia albivenis)
Oak Leaf Creeping Fig (Ficus pumila 'Quercifolia')
Peperomia 'Emerald Ripple Red' (Peperomia caperata)
Purple Waffle Plant (Hemigraphis alternata)

Sorry for taking the video down before. Someone caught a render error that I just couldn't leave in the video. I did a quick tweak last night after my final viewing and it ended up causing an issue with a few clips. Anyway, it's up now! Hopefully, you understand. Wonderful design. I've had fire bellies a long time and found they aren't big on water. Water features are great but you'll probably notice they spend little time swimming and rarely dive (usually only if scared). So I ultimately went with primarily soil in the terrarium with plants planted right in. I dug out a hole and put in a salad bowl at one end. It's deep and wide enough they can dive in and swim around but about 80% of the terrarium is land. They like to go hide in places and wander around so I have lots of little cave spots and pieces of wood and various plants. The fire bellies I have now are the offspring of ones I had years ago. When they released eggs into the water I collected them and raised them in a separate aquarium. Some benefits to having a deep soil terrarium is you can drop in various insects, like crickets or worms, etc. and the ones they don't eat right away go off and do their own thing. Crickets will be hanging out for weeks after feeding, and I have a permanent population of worms in there. It's become a full mini-biome. No need to ever clean most of it, waste is naturally cycled into the soil. The bowl just needs to get pulled out, washed off, and then returned.

At the point when the frame is finished I just can't see how all those square lines will be ever be concealed. Then you do some sort of magic and in the end it looks amazing. I particularly like your techniques with crushed stone and moss to hide the foam. Also the small rocks sprinkled on the substrate work so well to add perspective and connectivity to the whole design. I thoroughly enjoy every one of your builds. Great stuff !

At 10:56, where he sprays the fabric with water to make "the glue dry faster", it may seem odd but there's actually some interesting chemistry there. The cyanoacrylate bond is catalyzed by the hydroxyl ion (OH-) of which there are many in water. That's why super-glue bonds skin instantly; your skin always has a bit of moisture on it.

We filled half full of ware with a water fall for aeration for the tiny fish. We would hit the pet store every Friday after school and get a handful of a new species of fish. It was magical to see the schools of fish darting about with the ghost shrimps. I would spend hours watching them with my son, fond memories.

As I commented before, you inspired me to start a planted aquarium, a joy-filled project that was possible in the two minute increments I'm able to stand and work on it. Some plants died off, but I hedged my bets by starting with 12 species of plants, mostly poached from my mom's shade garden, and I'm still left with 9 species a month later. Since it's been a month, and the nitrogen cycle had completed, I added a most beautiful betta fish a few days ago! He's become my new best friend. I was shocked with the obvious level of intelligence displayed by him these first few days. He explored thoroughly every tiny change made to his environment, he's as curious as that metaphorical cat lol, and he even uses Java fern leaves as a play slide on occasion! I decided he deserves a little extra enrichment, so I'll be changing things up some every few days. Today was the first I decided to do that, and he's explored every object in the most thorough manner that I moved. I didn't add anything new yet, but I'll be doing that in the future. I just repositioned items (rocks and plants) in the front of the aquarium and he's spent hours now, swimming around and in every object moved. I highly recommend providing enrichment stuffs for bettas now! You might try it for yours. Thank you for inspiring me to embark on this project. Every new stem and root and leaf that since appeared has given me little senses of accomplishment, little moments of joy, and my new little jewel of a friend is just amazing. Thank you

I love how some of the spiderwood looks like its roots to some larger tree, and you blend it in with all the live plants, which just makes it look so real. The contrast between the brighter colored wood and stone looks so great with all the deeper green colored plants you chose. Great job!

I think you are a genius. I love aquariums and zoos, animals in general, water in particular, and plants and nature. Your scapes are the finest I have ever seen; in homes, public aquariums, reptile houses at zoos from San Francisco, San Diego to Baltimore. Thanks for sharing; I love them.

This is amazing! You inspired me to try building tanks for myself and your guidance has made it so much easier. Question: I’ve heard mixed things about housing fire bellied toads with fish and inverts. Yours seem to be thriving though. Do you (or anyone else here) have any advice about housing them together? I assume the fish would have to be cold temp fish (no tropicals) but I’m mainly worried about the frogs’ toxins or something harming the fish.

Love how the toads all have a different way of jumping in the water, with the first one taking their time and being unsure about it, the second one diving in ahead and the third hopping in with a plop.

It's absolutely incredible. My friend has 5 White cloud mountain minnows. Last night, I showed a couple of the minnows this setup. One of them was wondering if they could move into the tank? . He's a fluent toad, shrimp, and danio speaker and feels he'd be able to bridge the gap between the different residents.
