I Made an Upcycled Paludarium. Here’s How.
I knew I wanted to replace the aquarium in the wall with a paludarium, but I wasn't sure where that journey would take me. That was until I was inspired by some junk / scrap materials I had in my storage area. Many of those are covered in glue, plaint, and foam). Others aren't viable for anything on their own. I figured, why not see what I can do by combing pieces together?
I ended up with something incredible! I also think this is a great example of how you could work on a budget by combining small pieces to create large ones. I've done it in the past, but after this, I'll definitely do it more. What do you think of this paludarium? Let me know in the comments!

This was not how I expected this paludarium would end up, but I'm extremely pleased it did. I typically just use these scraps as filler that you don't see in a design. However, I think this is a better use of those pieces and a great example of how you can make something cool from junk! Enjoy the video and have a great weekend SerpaSquad!

Can you make a darkwater swamp set up and include purple and a blue crawfish with small purple schooling fish you can go as crazy with the roots as possible. I love you videos and will watch them till you stop posting. Your fan Lawson ❤❤

Iv got 15 years worth of what other people call junk that I call treasurer and now I know what to do with it 👍 next weeks projet here we come
I’m so glad I found your channel months ago. It has not only helped me get in to the hobby(29 gallon freshwater community and 12 gallon long betta tank) it’s provided a lot of comfort. My mom was diagnosed with cancer back in August and sometimes when I’m feeling down I binge watch your channel. It’s calming, informative and beautiful. Thank you so much, Tanner!

I agree with you on that one man. I’ve used him for similar after school when days were long and hard I’d chill out with his vids. Btw, I’m praying for your mom. Remember Jesus heals and God sees you as he sees me and he cares.

I've had the fortune of finding him a while ago, I'm loving seeing new folks coming to and appreciating his work, he's a great dude from what I've seen, and I'm glad this channel can be of help to you, it sure has been an inspiration for me to get into terrariums (I also came from the aquarium hobby, I found him early in my aquatic journey as well) That being said, I'm glad to see ya here and glad to see Tanner and his Channel getting some love. He certainly deserves it. He's helped me tons with various things over the time I've been following. I hope it remains the same for you. I hope your mom is doing well, keep that morale up for her, it does wonders for them. It's tough, much love to ya, hope you continue to do well in the future and I wish your mother well on her journey. It can be beat ❤

i found it very helpful during covid.
I fell down a KZread rabbit hole watching your videos and now after 50 years of fish keeping I am out of fish and have built 4 bioactive enclosures. The time spent in construction is an exercise in patience but well worth it. It is a great retirement hobby and everyone who comes into the house is drawn to the crested gecko enclosures. You are the GOAT in naturalistic design. My grandsons and I scavaged the woods and made little terriums for their rooms. Thank you Tanner.

Respectfully, this is the cutest comment I’ve ever seen and I absolutely love that for you and your grandsons. You sound like the coolest grandparent ever and I’m sure they’ll cherish those terrariums forever 🥺

This is a great reminder that the materials we use are not infinite and getting as much use out of them as possible really brings your care for the natural world full circle. Love to see it and gorgeous results!
The note about Nerite Snails....I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY!

Will those eggs that will hatch after being dried out, or are they just an eyesore?
@fallingskies8991

@@effy_kujoNerite snails need brackish/salt water to hatch their eggs in, so they’re just an eyesore in freshwater.
I was kinda hoping for a literal junk tank. like a scape of a city canal reclaimed by nature or something like that. Might still be a great challenge to find safe junk to put in a tank though. Still looks amazing as always. keep up the inspiring work.

I don't think it's as difficult as you might think, things like broken bottles and flowerpots make good hiding places for fish, you just have to sand off any sharp edges and make sure that there are no places the fish can get trapped. Then maybe throw in some sticks, dried leaves, maybe some thoroughly cleaned animal bones, that kind of thing.
I swear I just heard those little shrimp say "Weeeeeeee🎉🎉!!!" Very nice!!❤
Life can be very difficult something’s, you have become such a comfort to so many people. Your care and attentiveness to your animals is amazing. Please remember to give yourself breaks and don’t feel obligated, last thing we want is you getting burnt out. The amount of time and dedication it takes I’m sure can zap your energy and sometimes hurt your mental health, take care of yourself so we can continue to enjoy your work.
That part early on in the video about recommending to not keep nerite snails made me want a video where you go over what animals you recommend and don't recommend
Lovely work, Tanner! I'm glad you were able to replace the deteriorating bathroom aquarium with that classy paludarium. Looks like all those odds and ends of materials stimulated your creative energies.
if i was a little critter i would wanna live in your tanks and terrariums, and that’s the biggest compliment i can give 💕
Love it 😍 I love the illusion of two old stumps rotting in the forest and slowly being reclaimed as a growing surface for new plants. The ferns are just perfect additions.
Your toilet paper roll is killing my OCD it’s over not under 😂😂love your work 💪🏼

Who wouldn't want this in their bathroom or anywhere else!?! It is beautiful. Just like every other project you've done. You definitely have great talent! And it's fun to watch & learn!
It’s amazing how you made those scraps actually look like natural tree roots/tree trunk under water! You always motivate me to do my projects. I currently have 3 planted tanks, a vivarium that I need to plant and my next project is a paludarium in a 35 gallon cube tank I have sitting empty ❤
Awesome work as always, I love paludariums. Really want to see you do one for newts some time (but I admit I’m biased) :)

That's what I commented to him. I'm surprised he hasn't had any yet. He would make a great environment for them.
All I can say is wow!! Turning those bits into roots was amazing. Another beautiful build🤩
Tanner, your creativity is beyond genius. How you can design such beauty out of scraps is amazing. The plants and fish are a superb choice also. I adore your work. Love and appreciation from Ontario.
Reminds me of what I just did for my pet crayfish. I grabbed random stuff I wasn't using and made a naturalistic set up and positioned the wood to look like roots on top of some rocks. I love scaping with random stuff 😂
I love the use of the substrate bags under the sand. It seems like a really elegant way to make sure the dirt layer and the sand layer stay unmixed!
It looks amazing!! You are a true nature builder artist!!
I would literally pay money to do a class like this with you as the teacher. This should be a regular practice in art classes. Like painting or sculpting.

This is my favorite build of yours! Would love an update to see where it is now
You don't often see a paludarium with mostly water and less air like that. It looks great. Makes me feel better about the halfnhalf one I'm planning.

If you want more inspiration, you could search for ripariums. I’m planning to make one too, I think they can look really cool
This is a nice reminder that I should gather all my materials in 1 place. I always buy too much scaping material and then it end somewhere in a cardboard box. Lovely build btw.
Looks good
You truly understand good design
I have a 10g kitchen tank that receives a bunch of indirect natural light that I've been wanting to redo/change up from a once shrimp tank that turned into a catch all/ quarantine. And I have a giant squirrel foot fern that needs to be divided. Yet again Serpa inspiration acquired!!
I tend to just toss my scraps around. Some of them get saved, some of them end up sitting on my garage floor for months or get tossed. This really shows just how much use you can get out of these materials, despite how unappealing they may look at first. Thank you for making this one, I'm going to start saving 100% of my scraps.
This setup is so pretty 💚 I really love how well the colors of the Endler’s Livebearers look with the hard scape and plants!
this is one of my favourite builds of yours!!! I adore builds with sand, this is just so beautiful and I wish you would film it at the end for longer. Even a 20 minute or longer video of just watching this build - or any others of yours to be honest - would be amazing!

I concur
It's always nice to build using scraps. You tend to get some neat results out of it.
This turned out beautifully! As always :)
Thanks for all the inspiration. SerpaSquad for life!
I wonder, would this technically be considered a riparium? Very beautiful as always, the addition of the snails and shrimp really brought it all together. I would sell my left foot to have a setup like that in my bathroom
Another beautiful build. I live your channel, its changed how i try to build aquariums, and ive gotten my nephew hooked. I got him an isopod tank and some isopods for Christmas. I basically won auntie of the year 😂. Ive gone out looking for wild isopods with him and savaging stuff
It's a good thing you did stuff accordingly (and appropriately).
Tomorrow is the day I scape my own 55 gallon blackwater tank with 18 neon tetras 12 corydoras, 2 male and 4 female Bolivian ram chiclids, and some bladder snails (they came along with the plants) thank you so much with inspiration to my future scapes ❤.
Endlers was a great choice for this tank they are a perfect size scale for the Scape, once again it's a work of art
Observing nature while nature calls...lol. Another beautiful build 💙💚
Brilliant....I have been gathering 'STUFF' for my next project ....I'm looking forward to starting....can't decide what kind of look I'm going to go for ....thank you for showing great kindness tho....this is the most important part for my build....I want everybody to be really happy and to find a place without bullying someone else out.....THANK YOU....IM thinking spider ☺️😉🤔🤔🤔mmmmm? Not sure ...but thankyou
I went to the Butterfly Pavilion because Tanner worked with them, and it was great! An hour drive away and we saw so many types of butterflies. Plus I held the tarantula, which was actually really chill
Love the reuse of old bits. your tanks are amazing.
Nice project
Hello Tanner. I really enjoyed this project as the timing of me coming across it was perfect. I am finally at a point in building this 55G for single species Central American Cichlids. Great look. Thanks.
I saw paludarium and junk, came running 👀
Hahaha!!! “ While I observe nature unfold beyond the glass when nature calls “ Nice one Tanner!! 😂😂
Beautiful job!
okay you LITERALLY keep putting out video tutorials for project ideas i’ve been considering. THANK YOU
I've always loved the old trunks in water.
Totally amazing!
This is one of my favourite builds you’ve done. It’s nice to see something like this can be done with scraps.
Adding the livestock without comment and the magical music felt very serene. Nice touch! 👍
I am working on building a moss grotto out of stuff from local parks and forests in a similar but smaller vein~!
Very pretty paludarium. This summer I actually setup a 10 gallon tall cube with a stump-like driftwood, dragon stone, and almost the same plants w/ cherry shrimp & endlers. Very similar setup!
Shrimp must be the flavor of the month. Super cool build
HI!!!! I LOVE Your Channel!!!! You inspired my new channel Mainly Mini Tanks! Thanks for posting every Saturday!
Gosh, man. That is so cool!
always love your projects
I would absolutely love to see an update on the 300 gallon paludarium. I remember watching the original build in wonder, as I have always been amazed by the incredible uses of driftwood in it. That project in particular inspired one of my tanks, and I would also love to see how the silver dollars are doing.
I haven't watched a video in awhile; but I'm realizing you've seriously up'd your game! Amazing.
The Malaysian driftwood on the left is stunning. I suspect they are buttress roots from a young dipterocarp tree, so they’re perfect for this!
From the title I expected a scrap metal build or something. Really liked how it turned out!
Thanks for this vid. Looks great
I’ve been watching your channel for many, many years. You still continue to amaze me because when you start a build, I can’t picture what you’re doing. Yet the end project is always mind blowing! Such talent!!🐠🐟
Great job as always
These fish are soooo cute
another stunning piece of artwork. Amazing!
When i first started the fish keeping/herp and insect keeping hobby i would look at how much extra and left over stuff you had and couldnt believe you just had all that lying around to use whenever you wanted. 4 years later and i have empty tanks, random driftwood, filters and airstones and so much stuff i dont even know where it cane from.
I'm absolutely amazed by the beauty and artistry of your work, just a fantastic channel 👏. I'm hoping you could do an episode focused on describing the synthetic products you use, all the glues, foam, paint, etc. Maybe another one plants, or substrate? It would be so helpful to have all the information in one place.
I'm glad you mentioned the egg issue with nerite snails, I'm getting ready to set up my first aquarium and was going to put those in with my neocaridinas. Any suggestions for other freshwater snails that don't leave such an impact on a hardscape?
Love the build brother! And the subtle music in the back ground through out your narration was a nice touch! Can't wait for the next one!
This is so cool, I can't believe you made something like this out of SCRAPS. I love your videos.
great vid
I love this so much! Even though you probably can go buy stumps you used scraps to create this beautiful set up. Kinda reminds me of your earlier videos. Finding things to use around the house/property makes this build even more special. You are always sharing the love of this hobby to those on a budget which I appreciate. 🥰🙏🏻❤️ Thank you for this video and your creative ideas. Love it! ❤
Beautiful! Tanner, you're a great artist!
asome, to make every part of ur home a piece of living art its simply asome.... Take care, and peace ;)
So inventive! Kudos 👏
I too love "just in case" stuff.
I love the shot of you looking inspired at 1:26 lol
Beautiful setup!❤
Amazing artistry!
The comment about narite snails had so much heat behind it, haha, they must have been big frustration! Great work, as always.
Absolutely beautiful. Impressive that it came from scraps, because it looks very much premium.
Very cool build! Love reusing old materials!
I love your vids
The master of paludariums. I would like to attempt one of these someday, and you have provided lots of inspiration over the years. Peace and blessings to you!
Beautiful!
I'm surprised he doesn't have newts or salamanders. He could make a great habitat for them.
Amazing
its so pretty 🥺
I love this channel. In college my roommate and I would take old furniture and cut glass to size and make terraria of them. You channel had inspired me to do more projects like yours. I'm currently working on one but was hoping for a recommendation on brand of aquarium epoxy to use to lock my dragon stone together?
Wow that's looks awesome thanx for sharing tanner
Another amazing living piece of art!
Great result from scraps!
Homemade stumps are a great idea! They can be exactly as you envision them ❣️
I love how clearly you pronounce the plant names
Amazing as always!
Man it looks 🔥🔥🔥
This is a very cool setup!
