ELO did for violin, cello and bass what Chicago did for horns.
Fantastic! And with Mike Edwards’ exploding cello! ✔️

Yeah. Wish we'd actually seen it......typical TV production.
Wonderful Grieg and ELO ! 🎸🎹🍺🍺
Love the ELO lightbulb neons! I don't think I ever saw those! Great stuff keep it up Midnight Special! Thank you!
Mike Edwards was a hoot! I loved the time he spent with ELO...before he decided enough is enough. The band really took off around this time, but not in any way because of Mike leaving. The addition of Melvyn and Kelly cemented the lineup that already existed and it's all music history from that point forward. I only saw ELO in concert once during the Out of the Blue tour, but what an incredible tour it was. As for Mike Edwards, may he rest in peace. He was a real gentle man despite his antics. There's a multi-part interview on KZread with Mike Edwards that's worth the time to watch. Thanks for posting!
Magnificent!. I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to appreciate this performance. Thank you The Midnight Special.❤
I remember watching this when it aired. I had been introduced to ELO' s music by an uncle...and thought it was cool as hell that a rock group used violins and cellos as a main part of their musical instruments.
Pure magic! It's great to finally see this performance, thanks. I can't wait to see the full show, lots more ELO on this one 👍
Great song! My first concert experience was ELO in February 1976. Still love this band from the early years.

Mine was ELO in March 1976. Cobo Arena, Detroit. You're correct. The earlier years were far and away their best.
Love them so much! This such a great rendition of this song! I bet it sounded incredible in person! One band I wish I'd gotten to see live. 🔥
Thank you very much!!!... 😮😍🔝👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

From Edvard Grieg to Savatage, what a Great song. I saw ELOs performance at our hockey rink, the Ice Palace in Las Vegas in the mid 70s. Thanks for posting.
This a great video with some rare moments: 1. Kelly Groucutt and Mike Edwards performing together 2. Kelly Groucutt playing “In The Hall Of The Mountain King” 3. Clean shaven Hugh McDowell and of course 4. Mike Edwards’ exploding cello

Oh my!!!!! The trip down memory lane continues, The audacity of Jeff Lynne to play an instrumental when they were still unknown in the US , but also speaks of Burt Sugarman’s mastery of giving the musicians play as they wish is my opinion why the Midnight Special had such an impact on so many of us , thank you for the memories BS .

OMG what a flashback! Awesome time and memories of a bygone era of excellent music! My parents loved ELO and passed that love onto me!
Man I would love to get ahold of that ELO neon sign they have up on stage

I much preferred those to the Wurlitzer-style logo (not to mention the stupid spaceships....).
It's appropriate that Mike Edwards' cello exploded on stage. It could have been his last performance with the band before the "definitive" lineup came to fruition.
@user-yl5fu2it7j

The "definitive" lineup was the first post-Roy lineup with Wilf, Mike E, Colin, and Mike D. They were fantastic and Wilf, particularly, was the best they ever had.
Modern take on the Edvard Grieg classic from Peer Gynt Suites.

They should have turned it down. I think it's an insult to the band to be inducted into that ........
Very nice!
I prefer the rawer, rougher live sound to the note-perfect, airtight duplication of the studio recordings that ELO live currently is.

Always loved the music of Grieg; funnily enough, I never liked pop but I always liked ELO, especially Mr. Blue Sky.

They could/should have been much more than a 4/4 major key 4 chord pop band
@JonSmithsVoyages
Жыл бұрын
I would certainly argue that they were more than a 4 chord pop band. Even though they developed a more "radio friendly" sound in their later years, they never lost their brilliance. "Strange Magic" "Livin' Thing" "Turn To Stone" "Mr. Blue Sky" etc. all have some complex chord structures, harmonies, and unique arrangements. (And some of their deep cuts from those years go into even wilder territories.) I think through most of their career the band remained innovative and continued to experiment with new sounds and instruments.

You could/should listen a little more deeply and better.
The cello?. How about the blue violin
Is this a little dig at King Crimson ?
@groundhog713
7 ай бұрын
No, ELO was pretty edgy and experimental back then. From the self-titled debut to Out Of The Blue, ELO was definitely making music that was breathtaking and cutting edge!
Imagine the balls it takes to play this on television in the age of the 7" single....
3:19 .. and of course , the TV crew miss the whole thing. Typical.
