Music by AntiCon
Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Founded by lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, the band went through a succession of drummers, most notably Chad Channing, and then recruited Dave Grohl in 1990. Nirvana's success popularized alternative rock, and they were often referenced as the figurehead band of Generation X. Their music maintains a popular following and continues to influence modern rock culture.
In the late 1980s, Nirvana established itself as part of the Seattle grunge scene, releasing its first album, Bleach, for the independent record label Sub Pop in 1989. They developed a sound that relied on dynamic contrasts, often between quiet verses and loud, heavy choruses. After signing to major label DGC Records in 1991, Nirvana found unexpected mainstream success with "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the first single from their landmark second album Nevermind (1991). A cultural phenomenon of the 1990s, Nevermind was certified Diamond by the RIAA and is credited for ending the dominance of hair metal.
Characterized by their punk aesthetic, Nirvana's fusion of pop melodies with noise, combined with their themes of abjection and social alienation, brought them global popularity. Following extensive tours and the 1992 compilation album Incesticide and EP Hormoaning, the band released their highly anticipated third studio album, In Utero (1993). The album topped both the US and UK album charts, and was acclaimed by critics. Nirvana disbanded following Cobain's suicide in April 1994. Various posthumous releases have been overseen by Novoselic, Grohl, and Cobain's widow Courtney Love. The posthumous live album MTV Unplugged in New York (1994) won Best Alternative Music Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards.
Nirvana is one of the best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide. During their three years as a mainstream act, Nirvana received an American Music Award, Brit Award and Grammy Award, as well as seven MTV Video Music Awards and two NME Awards. They achieved five number-one hits on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and four number-one albums on the Billboard 200. In 2004, Rolling Stone named Nirvana among the 100 greatest artists of all time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility in 2014.
Cobain became disenchanted after early touring because of the band's inability to draw substantial crowds and the difficulty in supporting themselves financially. During their first few years playing together, Novoselic and Cobain were hosts to a succession of drummers. Eventually, the band settled on Chad Channing, with whom Nirvana recorded the album Bleach, released on Sub Pop Records in 1989. Cobain, however, became dissatisfied with Channing's style and subsequently fired him. He and Novoselic eventually hired Dave Grohl to replace Channing. Nirvana played many gigs and shows around Olympia Washington. Grohl helped the band record their 1991 major-label debut, Nevermind. With Nevermind's lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Nirvana quickly entered the mainstream, popularizing a subgenre of alternative rock called "grunge". Since their debut, Nirvana has sold over 28 million albums in the United States alone, and over 75 million worldwide. The success of Nevermind provided numerous Seattle bands, such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, access to wider audiences. As a result, alternative rock became a dominant genre on radio and music television in the U.S. during the first half of the 1990s. Nirvana was considered the "flagship band of Generation X", and Cobain found himself reluctantly anointed by the media as the generation's "spokesman". He resented this characterization, since he believed his artistic message had been misinterpreted by the public.

Back in college, I dated the woman who, a few years later, famously dated Kurt, at least for a little while, at least until Courtney found out😻 Scott, you are the hardest working man in show business! I love your style, your sensitivity, and the way your videos take me places I could never justify personally going❤

This one was very special. Thank you. I was here in 2019 driving up to Vancouver to fly home to the UK and was totally unaware of the Olympia/Nirvana thing at the time. I did stop at Sleater-Kinney Road to take a photo of the sign, because I am a fan of that band. Maybe when you are back here you could do another vid with Jonny on Sleater-Kinney? I found a fly poster for them in a bar in Portland, so my trip all hung together. This was all so, so, so great. I totally loved it.

It's just full of down-and-out people 😟 I started going downtown in '95 we had a wonderful music scene, outdoor festivals and just an all-around good vibe. I thought I would always love Olympia downtown but you couldn't pay me to go down there now for any reason. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the video. Also there's still some old timers that are around if you go into the Clipper bar or McCoy's tavern or the Reef you will run into people who knew him personally and more than likely get first-hand account stories you may not have ever heard before.

Scott, man I love every single Nirvana, Eminem / PROOF video you make. I was first introduced to Nirvana in 95 when I was 11 when I watched the Unplugged in New York MTV episode. I got heavy into, and obsessed with Nirvana in 99. 5 years after Kurt left us. I scoured Napster, Kazza and Limewire for any and all unreleased Nirvana songs to burn into blank cds. Than years later those songs would be released on a huge box set eventually. I had the Kurt and Courtney documentary, the Come as you are biography book, t shirts, posters and every album of course. The last song I ever recorded off the radio on a cassette was Nirvana's last song they ever recorded as a band "You know your right" I have a picture of a kurt cobain exhibit from visiting The hard rock cafe in Las Vegas in the mid 90's as well.

Great tour. ❤ A few years ago at the Isle of Wight festival here in the UK Seasick Steve and Foo Fighters shared the bill. Both Steve and Dave Grohl recounted a tale on stage of how they had met at a small show in Olympia or Washington when Steve was a drifter and hadn’t seen each other again until that festival in 2009. They both seemed quite emotional about it. I’m pretty sure Steve said it was one of Dave’s first sets with Nirvana. I can’t help but wonder now if it was the party in the mods!

Totally unrelated… I knew that was you on the Glee documentary! Once it was confirmed I was so proud to see you! Keep up the awesomeness that is you. I hope one day to shake your hand! …… RIP Kurt ❤
