Thank you @English with Lucy for the hints! General , quite general and specific could be a good starting point! When I explain prepositions of place to my students I also refer to dimensions: AT is 1D, point/destination on map, location on GPS, ON - 2D perspective(table, bus, train ...) and IN as 3D, like buildings, large areas. :)

I think the difference between “in a taxi” and “on the bus” is actually physical and historical. The first busses and trams were higher platform based. So you actually had to “hop on” or “get on top” of that platform. The same for the planes. You have to walk up on the board of the plane. Hence I am on the bus. You can still use “in the plane” or “in the bus” but it will have a different meaning. His wallet was found in the bus - you are referring to the inside part of the bus. Her purse was laying on the bus (roof).

As a native English speaker, the use of these prepositions is intuitive. However, I find it fascinating to learn there are basic rules to their use. It's also humbling to think of someone else learning english and managing all these subtleties. You english learners ROCK!

9:40 ON Christmas Eve, ON New Year's Eve (students always ask me about 'eve' ) 9:06 AT Christmas: when a festival period is longer than 1 day we say 'at' so ON Christmas Day but AT Christmas or ON Easter Sunday but AT Easter :)

So "at" implies an action that is usual in that particular place, while "in" emphasizes the position (inside some place). Am I understanding it correctly?
