In Memoriam: Saying Goodbye to the Cars We Lost This Year (R.I.P.)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Regular Car Reviews says goodbye to the cars we lost this year. While some of these cars will get 2024 editions, production for them ended in calendar year 2023. Join us as we eulogize some of the most iconic cars ever made, from undervalued gems to overrated classics and everything in between. We bid a fond farewell to cars from Audi, Chevy, Chrysler, Dodge, Ferrari, Jeep, Kia, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, and more. It's a celebration of life for some true automotive legends! This is the RCR Automotive In Memoriam.

SUVs taking over everything and pushing out sedans and hatchbacks is like when we bred certain dog breeds into being so horribly deformed- like the bulldog. Used to be a healthy, proud breed. Now, it's oversized, bulky, and fucked up. That's what happened to cars when they were all morphed into CUVs and SUVs.

Now, the SUV and CUV's of today are just bastard children of focus groups and BOD's. I probably will never own one again unless I find a 82-90 S series in a barn somewhere.

Meanwhile the Puma a B-segment CUV, which replaced the Fiesta, is getting slaughtered in sales by the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa hatch, which hasn't been a top three contender since the '90s but is now Europe's best selling B-segment car.

I sold Audis from 2007 to 2010, right around the launch of the second gen TT. When you went through Audi product training back then, they would say that the TT of that time was the most Audi of any Audi. The taillights were inspired by the R8 LeMans Prototypes that were dominating the 24 hour race at that time, the front 2/3rds were Aluminium, a material Audi pioneered the use of in production cars, and the 2.0 Turbo engine had their FSI (Fuel Stratified Injection) technology that was also developed for their aforementioned R8 race car. No car company loves the smell of their own farts more than Audi, and of all those farts, they loved smell of the TT the most. Your line about "vision board on four wheels" was more accurate than you might have realized Roman. Although I must admit, I kinda thought it had already gone out of production. Great video.

The Kia Stinger dying is seemingly a result of Kia dealerships themselves. Every time I've seen a Stinger it's been priced to BMW levels while on the lot, and every time I've heard someone say they thought about buying a Stinger and then asked them why they didn't, they said it was because the dealership was a horror show. The Kia wasn't stealing customers from more expensive cars, it was enticing buyers who would've been brow beaten into an SUV or CUV instead. The problem was that dealers kept trying to hound customers into more profitable vehicles like the Telluride so the markup wasn't as noticeable, or weren't used to dealing with people who actually knew something about cars coming in and being interested in one specific car instead of taking whatever was lobbed at them. Car enthusiasts wanted Stingers. Kia dealers kept them away. Also, the Maxima. Hah. The Maxima was in the house of the victims of Ghosn. I liked my A34, but it still wasn't comparable to the A32. And the A35 and A36 that came after, well... I don't even know why they made them. Not even rental agencies would take them when the Altima was there. Both were almost the same size, both had terrible build quality, both were stuck with the CVT, and both had the VQ35DE, but one was cheaper on insurance due to being an intermediary mid-sizer and somehow faster.

Roman. I have grown to love your "Longer Car Reviews." I love your dives into the history of vehicles and their impact in the automotive industry. I Want you to continue, regardless of how long they ar. If they turn into full podcasts. It is something I would play while play while I am working (those safety officers permitting). It is highly informative and i vehemently encourage you to keep it up. ( I would be willing to pay for the continuation of automotive advancements and the absurd vehicle advancements that becomes common.

The loss of the LX platform cars hits hard for me. My dad was a lifelong Mopar fanatic. His first car was a 1968 Roadrunner GTX and every car/truck he owned was Dodge/Chrysler. He worked as a stone mason year round 7 days a week. He was going to retire at 55 and trade in the 2018 truck towards a Hellcat...but job related cancer took his life at 54 in 2020.

It’s going to be surreal to have the LX/LH platform Charger and Challenger not around anymore. It’s practically been a constant ever since I got into cars. Not one of my favorites, or one I’d own, but sad to see the machismo mobile be sunsetted, even if you’ll find a 2005 Mercedes E-class if you scratch away at one for long enough.

The CX-90 is a rear-drive architecture that has nothing to do with the CX-9's architecture. There hasn't been any "Ford" in Mazda since 2012, and even then it was more "how much Mazda is in Ford" because Ford used a lot of Mazda platforms and Mazda-derived powertrains over the years.

The continued demise of sedans, coupes and hatchbacks really bums me out. And I know companies love to rave about how SUVs are what the public wants, but I can't help but wonder if that's *actually* want the public wants or if it's just what companies want the public to want, you know? Also, it seems fitting to me that I got a mid-roll ad for the Mazda CX-90 right before the CX-9 segment. The algorithm knows...

@@rturner4205 The legacy was announced to be discontinued about 2 years ago. It is in limited markets and will die with the next refresh. I never like the Legacy after it left the Legacy platform with the 5th gen. The VA WRX and Levorg were OK and continued the Legacy platform, but without a wagon in the US and the CVT Subaru is not the same. The current line up other than the WRX cannot even drive both axles at road speed. The rear only gets power with slip so if you are going up a slippery hill and the front wheels catch you lose power to the rear and slide back down or dig a rut.

In 2019, I bought a Jeep Renegade, after going to see a new Jeep Cherokee. The Renegade was similar (if not better) featured, cheaper and only slightly smaller. I traded in a 2000 Cherokee on it. I wasn't thrilled with the engine choices on these lower end jeeps (they were mostly the same at the time), but after driving them both i felt the renegade was a better choice. I hear the the Renegade will be discontinued in 2024 also. Im still happy with the choice after 5 years so i guess thats something.

The very first car I ever drove was a Jeep Cherokee. I was 13yo, and it was nighttime. My father pulled over, and asked me if I wanted to drive the rest of the way home. What fool would say no to that? We swapped seats, he adjusted everything for me, and I drove at a VERY slow pace. I made it all the way to the front of the house, when I parked, and told him that I was too scared to go the rest of the way. It was probably for the better because if my mom would have seen, she would be furious. This was during a time (1996) when the town was much more rural, and there hardly was anyone on the road, or anything really for me to crash into. My father passed away in 2005, and it probably wasn’t till sometime in the 2010s that I told my mom what happened. She was upset and told me that had she had known, she would have gotten onto him so hard about it. Who lets a 13yo drive a car?!? I explained that was probably why I never told her. What benefit would there be in having her know? This was a pretty big trust exercise/bonding experience for me and my dad, and I will forever cherish it. Probably won’t let my own kid drive that young, but you never know.

the 1st gen chrysler 300c was the first real muscle car i have ever sat in. it was my grandfathers. i remember feeling the torque throw me into the back seat as a 4 year old and it was the first time i’ve ever experienced real speed in a car. he still owns the car, it sits in his garage with 44k miles, a dead battery, and blown shocks. it hasn’t been driven since probably 2012. but that memory always held stuck with me throughout the years. when i heard the 300 was leaving production i was very sad. it was in my opinion one of chryslers better vehicles and it always had potential with the v8 option. i was very delighted though when they announced the final edition 300c with the scatpack power train. i never thought i would see one in person due to the low production numbers. turns out my step dads friend purchased a brand new one and i had no clue. when it spawned into my driveway right next to my wrx one day, with its velvet red paint and big brembo brakes, i never smiled more at a car in my life. sure it’s a heavy car, sure some may call it the hood rolls royce and a certified pimp mobile (even i do because it’s true lol). this car will always hold a special place in my heart.

the bolt is actually a good car for what it is tbh. it is supposed to be A Regular Car, but electric, and i think it succeeded very well for an inexpensive price. every now and again GM makes a good economy car and then kills it for stupid ass reasons. Also the Maxima deserves better, it was legitimately a great car for a long time in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. It was a perrennial Car and Driver 10 best winner, and there was a time when it was unquestionably the top dog of the 4 door Japanese sedans. I still think the 90s Maximas look great, too.
