In Defense of Disney's Wish: The politics of Rosas: Sovereignty, Marxism & Questioning Authority

Ойын-сауық

hewwo my lovely and beautiful people.
Hey Everyone! Welcome Back~ I’m Reese and this is Reese Grey Analyzes, and I am so excited that you guys decided to adventure with me today. On Reese Grey Analyzes, we look at creations and experiences in art, media, music, & even videogames to explore exactly WHY we think the way we think, question what we believe, and learn something new. And today, we're diving into one of my absolute favorite Disney movies that came out lately. Disney's Wish!
Our setting is what we assume is a sovereign state of Rosas under the rule of a monarchy under King Magnificio! Anybody can choose to live in the city of Rosas's rent free, but the catch is that they, have to give up their greatest wish to King Magnifico with no guarantee their wish will ever be granted. So, we see that within this political system the common people are seemingly taken care of monetarily yet exploited within an unfair system that steals hope and purpose from people's lives in order to control them. Lets explore King Magnifico's unravelling from a benevolent King to a ruthless power hungry fascist dictator :)

    I was on the wish hate bandwagon for a while. But this is interesting, this movie seems to have a little more depth than I thought. Almost makes me want to watch it! Almost...

    Haha!!! Yesss, give it a try! some of the criticism, like the weird cadences in the songs, are valid but ... For me, with how talented the singers were, I still enjoyed the music! :) plus Star is such a cute character too!!!

    This is incredibly well made! 😁 I love the way you frame your argument in a clear and concise way, whilst also taking the film within context unlike so many of its critics. I always appreciate finding people who agree with the idea of Magnifico being a villain who clearly is running an authoritarian regime and commodifying people’s greatest desires. I did an analysis both on fan perception and at all costs, and I looked at the way the song utilizes itself to show both Asha and Magnifico’s perspective (typically we tend to see the visuals of wishes in fleeting bursts or even not at all from Magnifico’s view as he moves them around in patterns like wealth, whereas with Asha we see full potential of a wish realized and the beauty it holds). I love the way your argument is done, your video deserves so much more attention and I hope more people who love this movie like I do find their way here! 😊💛

    Funny thing for all the love they have now, you just described Pinocchio, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Treasure Planet, Atlantis and others. Pinocchio didn't do that well at the box office when it came out yet here we are still loving it, especially since Wish presents the origin of the wishing star in Pinocchio. Of course Bambi traumatized its generation with the hunters and the mother's death. Alice in Wonderland is literally a fever dream and wasn't well received in its day and even Walt Disney HIMSELF didn't wanna be associated with it after it came out. Sleeping Beauty was a mixed bag for all its animation and icons and Disney had to let its hand painting team go and switched to Xerox when doing 101 dalmatians afterwards For everyone nowadays wishing to go back to mature themes and Frollo-villains like Hunchback of Notre Dame, remember they had backlash for the dark, mature and even religious themes when it came out hence why some later films become more lighthearted.

    Thanks so much for this review! I learned a lot about politics. It made me think about a verse in the Bible in Proverbs 13:12. Hope deferred makes a heart sick. We all need to hope. So sad he'd take away hope and purpose. I'm going to watch this! I'll be watching more of your videos.

    THANK YOU. I truly love themes that Wish explores - corruptive force of power, mentality of a crowd and politics in general. Andanimation is actually great, a solid try in new style between 2D and 3D. I also started to kinda.... appreciate the fact that Wish is far from perfect, but it's constructive parts are so great (as I've said, themes, characters, beauty of design, ideas in general, those that were scrapped and that ended up in final movie) that they inspire people to do something with them. Have you listened, for example, songs *Our Message To The People* (here queen Amaya is also villian) or remake of *This is the thanks I get by Grant Steller* ?

    Can't really say anything, haven't watch it. But it's interesting to see your view of the movie, a lot more interesting than that of others. The same reviewer I told you the other day when talking aboutmean girls made a video about Wish saying it was dumb, so I guess is just like most things, specially when it comes to art, depends on your point of view. Good video! hopefully we get a new one soon, though I tend to take a while to watch'em 😅

    Asha even suggests just giving the wishes back if Magnifico won't grant them. She does know some wishes can be dangerous and should be tamed and refined, but giving them back to the people doesn't automatically make them come true but allows them the chance to either pursue them themselves and/or stop and consider their methods and if they should be pursuing them. "If they're dangerous, then they can be stopped" And at the beginning we see Asha thinking Magnifico grants the wishes of the "good and worthy" but turns out only grants those based on utility and their function towards his kingdom rather than the individual person. Becoming fairy godmother at the end, now Asha can provide just a little help and magic for the wishes of people based on true character and experiences (ie good Geppetto who brings joy to others and wishes Pinocchio as a living son or kindhearted Cinderella who's abused by her stepfamily etc)

    Funny thing when I brought up the wish-granting system to my dad and how everyone is ignorantly happy living without any memories of their dreams or desires and essentially made homogenous he told me it's essentially communism, which is what my family was running away from. Communism does level out people equally wealth and status-wise so there's an equality among the people, but it still gives power to a central government with full authority and that also begs the question of what are you doing to well-to-do/wealthy citizens who've done nothing wrong and remain good people who serve the community etc. Furthermore it leaves little opportunity for people to step up in life or fulfill certain dreams. I've heard in extreme cases they'll cut off your property if you own even an acre of land or a little more. This time everyone is equally without dreams or fulfillment because they've given them away based on Rosas' narrative while Magnifico is gaining more wishes than he grants by the year and thus are restricted from stepping up with their lives themselves, while Magnifico only grants those based on utility to his kingdom rather than the person's character or experiences.

    Can it really be called fascism if there isn't a military component to the regime's equation? Magnifico didn't seize power through a military coup or created a regime turned towards nationalism and forcefully enforced by the military regime.

  • @ReeseGreyAnalyzes

    @ReeseGreyAnalyzes

    3 ай бұрын

    That's a REALLY good point! In real life, I do believe militarism is needed and the population reveres/respects/fears the military in fascism. Buuuttt in the movies case, I felt like King Magnifico's magic & the populations reverence for the magic/king & later respect/fear for Simon as the kingdoms lone perfect soldier counted in this magical little world haha. But ur argument is so valid tho 👀. I guess the question is does King Magnifico+Simon+Magic= Army?🚩 Eh, sure for fun lol

    He essentially cajoles to the two new citizens at the beginning "you're going to be very happy here i promise you" before he says to make a wish and thus the wishes are extracted and the two no longer remember their wish and they're just staring in the crowd almost numb and unsure as someone goes "Forget without regret!" and one has her hand to her heart like there's just a void there like "ok i guess i should be happy now?". It's painless but it can also appear like you just took some numbing/antidepressants and hollowed yourself out. Also he says "it's a real weight off" but anyone in a gym or otherwise and even past stories will tell you weight gives and tests your strength. Plus completely erasing your own memories in most any form isn't exactly healthy to begin with. I notice similarities between this and the lotus eaters in the Odyssey where eating the lotus makes you "forget your worries" but it also makes you forget everything else in your life including your goals, dreams, home and family so you're just in a numb, ignorantly happy, doped up high stupor which of course Odysseus just turns down and focuses on getting to his family.
