Reese Grey Analyzes

Welcome to Reese Grey's Video Essay Channel where we look at popular media, music, videogames & more to explore exactly WHY we think the way we think, question what we believe, and learn something new.

The purpose of this channel is to get people talking to each other & thinking about things with genuine curiosity. The lack of kindness & empathy I sometimes saw on other commentary channels broke my heart, so I hope to add a more positive impact to an area that is, at times, is much too unnecessarily combative.

Let's learn from each other, together 💕

    Finally, someone I identify with on the topic of putting complex ideas to interpret the plot of Wish 🚬 This deserves more views, but analyzes tend to have less interest than simply "destroying" something, especially when it comes to things related to art.

    Whether each cop/politician MEANS to perpetuate this cycle of exploitation and harm is irrelevant. The very systems are faulty and work to protect the most wealthy and thus most harmful of our society. Simply being a cog in that machine is damning.

    Funny thing when I brought up the wish-granting system to my dad and how everyone is ignorantly happy living without any memories of their dreams or desires and essentially made homogenous he told me it's essentially communism, which is what my family was running away from. Communism does level out people equally wealth and status-wise so there's an equality among the people, but it still gives power to a central government with full authority and that also begs the question of what are you doing to well-to-do/wealthy citizens who've done nothing wrong and remain good people who serve the community etc. Furthermore it leaves little opportunity for people to step up in life or fulfill certain dreams. I've heard in extreme cases they'll cut off your property if you own even an acre of land or a little more. This time everyone is equally without dreams or fulfillment because they've given them away based on Rosas' narrative while Magnifico is gaining more wishes than he grants by the year and thus are restricted from stepping up with their lives themselves, while Magnifico only grants those based on utility to his kingdom rather than the person's character or experiences.

  • @donnguyen1107
    @donnguyen110729 күн бұрын

    Asha even suggests just giving the wishes back if Magnifico won't grant them. She does know some wishes can be dangerous and should be tamed and refined, but giving them back to the people doesn't automatically make them come true but allows them the chance to either pursue them themselves and/or stop and consider their methods and if they should be pursuing them. "If they're dangerous, then they can be stopped" And at the beginning we see Asha thinking Magnifico grants the wishes of the "good and worthy" but turns out only grants those based on utility and their function towards his kingdom rather than the individual person. Becoming fairy godmother at the end, now Asha can provide just a little help and magic for the wishes of people based on true character and experiences (ie good Geppetto who brings joy to others and wishes Pinocchio as a living son or kindhearted Cinderella who's abused by her stepfamily etc)

    He essentially cajoles to the two new citizens at the beginning "you're going to be very happy here i promise you" before he says to make a wish and thus the wishes are extracted and the two no longer remember their wish and they're just staring in the crowd almost numb and unsure as someone goes "Forget without regret!" and one has her hand to her heart like there's just a void there like "ok i guess i should be happy now?". It's painless but it can also appear like you just took some numbing/antidepressants and hollowed yourself out. Also he says "it's a real weight off" but anyone in a gym or otherwise and even past stories will tell you weight gives and tests your strength. Plus completely erasing your own memories in most any form isn't exactly healthy to begin with. I notice similarities between this and the lotus eaters in the Odyssey where eating the lotus makes you "forget your worries" but it also makes you forget everything else in your life including your goals, dreams, home and family so you're just in a numb, ignorantly happy, doped up high stupor which of course Odysseus just turns down and focuses on getting to his family.

    THANK YOU. I truly love themes that Wish explores - corruptive force of power, mentality of a crowd and politics in general. Andanimation is actually great, a solid try in new style between 2D and 3D. I also started to kinda.... appreciate the fact that Wish is far from perfect, but it's constructive parts are so great (as I've said, themes, characters, beauty of design, ideas in general, those that were scrapped and that ended up in final movie) that they inspire people to do something with them. Have you listened, for example, songs *Our Message To The People* (here queen Amaya is also villian) or remake of *This is the thanks I get by Grant Steller* ?

    I think the neo-liberal fascist line is referring to how the more presentable guise of economic policies can slip under the Left's radar. Could have been phrased more clearly if that's the case, but it rhymes so who cares. I completely disagree on the next line. Socko isn't making a moral judgment on cops or politicians, he's making a statement on the effects of their actions. It's pretty hard to argue against them protecting the interests of the elite, even if indirectly. Everyone is definitely a stretch, but as far as generalizations go, this is fine. The communication between Bo and Socko is certainly hurting their chances of having a productive conversation, but that doesn't matter because Bo never wanted to have a conversation in the first place. Bo isn't interested in what Socko has to say, he just wants to proceed with the song. His end goal for the conversation is to move on and pretend nothing happened. Socko is allowed to speak his mind, but is silenced once he starts taking some of Bo's control over the flow of the song. This isn't a conversation between two people who want to come to an understanding. Socko is only participating because he gets a temporary escape from his cage. In my opinion, Socko didn't make a mistake at all. Even if Socko played along from the start, he still would have been put back in hell the moment he stopped being useful.

    Funny thing for all the love they have now, you just described Pinocchio, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Treasure Planet, Atlantis and others. Pinocchio didn't do that well at the box office when it came out yet here we are still loving it, especially since Wish presents the origin of the wishing star in Pinocchio. Of course Bambi traumatized its generation with the hunters and the mother's death. Alice in Wonderland is literally a fever dream and wasn't well received in its day and even Walt Disney HIMSELF didn't wanna be associated with it after it came out. Sleeping Beauty was a mixed bag for all its animation and icons and Disney had to let its hand painting team go and switched to Xerox when doing 101 dalmatians afterwards For everyone nowadays wishing to go back to mature themes and Frollo-villains like Hunchback of Notre Dame, remember they had backlash for the dark, mature and even religious themes when it came out hence why some later films become more lighthearted.

    As a woman, I have several critiques of the female gaze and of the discourse as a whole. I'm the intended audience but 95% of the time, it's not working for me, and here's why. The gendered terms never sat well with me. I understand they don't refer to biological sex, but when the Male Gaze is framed as always objectifying and the female gaze as empowering, it reframes everything as Male = Bad and Female = Good. Possessive gaze and emotive gaze are much better terms to use rather than perpetuating the gender binary. Another issue I have is how fluid the female gaze can be. It's to the male gaze what Canada is to America, identified by what it's trying not to be. An identity is what makes you stand on your own. If it's in response to some other identity, then you don't have an identity, you've got a satellite connection. That's why we see so many coporate marketers go "oh female gaze is just whatever women make, right?" which is in turn threatens to make women's media corporatized and pro capitalism or pro consumerism. Which ties into my next point. The female gaze, much like how the male gaze assumes the audience is cis, straight, and white, also assumes a cis, straight, white female audience. There's not a lotta trans women' perspectives being shared or signal boosted. A white woman will never have the same experiences as a black woman because of white supremacy and the legacy of slavery, and race based gender discrimination. You mostly see white women and maybe Asian women's gazes, certainly not very many Arabic, Muslim, or indigenous POVs. The female gaze also focuses so much on emotional connection and intimacy that it feels frankly puritanical sometimes. "Men are hyper sexual and therefore the male gaze is hypersexual" versus "Women are emotional and therefore the female gaze is all about how you feel, not about how horny you are" accidentally (or intentionally) perpetuates tired gender stereotypes and cliches of women being nonsexual and men being actively sexual. "Men fuck, women feel" is why society just frankly doesn't understand female sexuality, which perpetuates and prolongs those same cliches and stereotypes. While I'm still on that topic, most analyses of the female gaze basically desexualize its characters and experiences. That's the part that seriously concerns me. It does everything in its power to desexualize its female characters even in distinctly sexual circumstances and experiences because it's desperately trying to avoid objectifying its characters and over-correcting. Look at the film Hustlers. It's about strippers but it's not shot through the male gaze at all. The women have agency and they control their bodies and the cameras. This same style you can see in My Dress Up Darling; Marin is a self insert for the female creator so her being sexy to the one guy who makes her happy is also not done through what is traditionally seen as the male gaze. Female sexuality is varied and diverse; shying away from it is prudish and misogynistic. The male gaze, in most analyses, is treated as always visual. It implies the female gaze can never be visual. It suggests women are not visual. It also implies and suggests that the female gaze is always relational and that the male gaze can never be relational. This is also very, very wrong and another tired cliche that continues to pigeonhole female sexuality as inherently less open, overt, or expressive as male sexuality. Look at Free; that swimming anime's first two seasons were directed by a woman who actively and publicly wanted women to find the swimmer boys hot, and it definitely succeeded. It was overt and blatant in ways that made sense for each character and never once objectified them. But because it's visual, too many people unfairly dismiss her work as just continuing the male gaze, when it frankly doesn't. Women haven't had very many ways to express ourselves in many cultures throughout history. We were demonized and tormented or killed for expressing how we feel. So womem historically found ways to express ourselves in code, which often flies over the average guy's head; it was for our own survival. That is why so much feminine media for women emphasizes subtlety, one could even say it emphasizes modesty, and I believe the female gaze continues that trend of socializing women into not being blunt or straightforward. For context I'm Latina; many white women and even Asian women find me super aggressive because of how blunt I am in how I express myself. I'm very off putting to the older crowd especially because I leave nothing to the imagination when I speak. A lotta men find me intimidating because I never hold back how I feel or what I do as I express myself. I could go on but I've said my piece. At ita best, the female gaze or emotive gaze should be the story behind the sex appeal. But it often doesn't do it well at all for the reasons listed above.

    This is incredibly well made! 😁 I love the way you frame your argument in a clear and concise way, whilst also taking the film within context unlike so many of its critics. I always appreciate finding people who agree with the idea of Magnifico being a villain who clearly is running an authoritarian regime and commodifying people’s greatest desires. I did an analysis both on fan perception and at all costs, and I looked at the way the song utilizes itself to show both Asha and Magnifico’s perspective (typically we tend to see the visuals of wishes in fleeting bursts or even not at all from Magnifico’s view as he moves them around in patterns like wealth, whereas with Asha we see full potential of a wish realized and the beauty it holds). I love the way your argument is done, your video deserves so much more attention and I hope more people who love this movie like I do find their way here! 😊💛

  • @robertmares8337
    @robertmares83372 ай бұрын

    First up, loved the video! I do have some things to say, but I'm not meaning for them to be negative in general. Much of the analysis, especially in regard to jargon is somewhat flawed. The format means that many ideas are going to have to be condensed, and one way to do it is by using jargon that can encompass the specific language intended. For instance talking about the line "neo-liberal fascism" I would first try to identify in what capacity each term was being used. A reasonable interpretation could be something like: the wealthy work to maintain free commerce and business autonomy while restricting the liberties of citizens. By removing liberties you remove their ability to fight control and influence, thus destroying their ability to create reform. Which is backed up by the general Marxist ideology presented earlier. In the case of "pedophilic elite" it literally is calling to wealthy and influential people like Epstein... and his ilk. Their interests are protected through policy implementation, which was stated to be protected by undermining "the left" through corporate and market control thus making established institutions barriers to insulate those with money and power regardless of their personal predilections. Although your analysis of his 4 and a bit minute song can be nearly 40 minutes long, his song can't be. There are compromises that need to be made. I think sparking thought and interest is more important (for creative works) than necessarily presenting well researched and structured arguments. In general art is largely an emotional thing, often using shorthand to communicate ideas and feelings in broad strokes as opposed to logic and nuance.

Before anyone says he's under the influence of dark magic, he was kinda already on that slope when he studied and harnessed magic all those years to begin with and in the disney universe, there are rules with magic in humans as defying natural order like life and death or human thought, emotions or desires. Getting people to give away their dreams and desires to you and making them forget them already crosses that magic line. As a translator, I can see and agree with the desire for people to use words properly, but I must tell you as well "Usage determines definition", if people use a word in a certain way enough, it's definition will be added to the dictionary. But I'm not sure if such a flagrant infringment of trademarks would be fine, but might help with getting a sponsor at some point, maybe(?), could even be of help for the algorithm, you could make a section exclusive for tiktok and youtube shorts called "Reese's Piece of mind" and do short videos talking about whatever, maybe stuff that makes you angry, or criticizing something or someone, serious news that you think people should pay attention to, anecdotes, silly news or facts you learned on the internet that you think not many know about, and once in a while you can change it to "Reese's Peace of mind" and talk about something wholesome or just do a POV video of you talking directly to the viewer and encouraging and lifting them up, or news again but about good things, so you reassure people that not everyhthing out there is bad, stuff like that. And of course, the first one "Piece of mind" could be at some point sponsored by Reese's Pieces hopefully. I don't know, the nick for the subs sounded fun like that, sorry for the rambling 😅

    Ooh yes, usage determining definition is absolutely valid. I like that phrase. Also REESES PIECES IS ADORABLE. :') I love that so much, the day Reese's sponsors this channel is the day I know I've made it lol. I'm not even kidding, that's so goals. Piece of Reese was what I had planned if I ever do -just vlogs- . I never noticed there was so many fun things to do with Reese and Piece/Peace so fun, thanky for the suggestions hehehe

    I married my husband that came from an individualistic culture. I came from a communal culture (Mexican). I love my husband but moving a different state it gets incredibly lonely when I was used to always having family around and a bbq every weekend. He doesn’t feel it because he was on his own most of the time.
