Impressive waterfall but are there trout above it and fish tacos for dinner!
I'm in North Carolina for a few weeks fly fishing and backpacking the area. I've decided to hike to this cool waterfall and then see if I can find any Native Brook Trout above the falls. The day ends in camp with fish tacos for dinner and enjoying the North Carolina weather! What a cool place to truck bed camp. Check out the other parts on my channel!

Thank u kindly. Yt tells me my audience isn't interested that truck video but I knew some were.
I recognized the spot immediately. Been there more than 100 times and maybe 15 trout. There is a private section about a mile downstream that is pretty nice. And I knew when I saw the AMB as the local brew. Keep the good work up!
North Carolina looks great! Thanks for showing us all the great country available to experience!

I would say the coolest part of your day was spotting the owl. That's what I call the little extras you get exploring my mountain world. For me, it never gets old. Thanks for sharing. Tight lines. 👍

7-1/2' 3-weight with a Battenkill II. I know that rig! (except I have a Redington). Bow and arrow cast. I know that too. Little brookies? Story of my life! If I had a dollar for every sub-legal brookie. 😎Thanks Drew. Good vid.

I dig that set-up. But I can see where those that do this more often opt for a 6ft ish rod...more on that in a later video!
Looks great, nice country side.

Will do!
I'm from VA near Shenandoah National Park and GW National Forests. Went down to this part of NC and was blown away by the quality of the fishing. Have to say, as far as native appalachian brookies go, it's hard to beat Central/Western VA in the mid-Atlantic, but the diversity of the streams and the size of the fish in NC are both fantastic. It's also absolutely beautiful and very accessible. Can't wait to go back.

@@LooknFishy let me know if you want any recommendations. Can send you an email. Def not as many wild browns or bows, because the park has protected the brook trout population very well. Enjoy your videos

Probably brookies tucked up in those little plunge pools on the waterfall, definitely in your typical Blue Rideg waterfall.

Nice Hiking! Ive found out the hard way as well, that there is a lot of both very productive and very non productive blue lines in North Carolina.

Haha, I figured the sour cream and beer would balance out the healthy side!
A trib with a set of falls like that can be hit or miss. You'll either find a unique population of brook trout or very few (if any) above them. Its just a natural barrier for them. Have you considered using furled leaders for streams that size? They last a very long time, don't knot up very easily, and generally are shorter in length for those tight quarters
@LooknFishy

Yea, the natural barrier was why I went hoping to keep the wild bows out. Same for cutts out west. I have not but will look into them!
Also, what brand of fly rod roof rack do you have? Do you recommend it? Thanks!
“Then I have my spot”. ??? Is it a location gps tool?

Hi Drew, I’m old to fly fishing but because of my stubborn ways, I’m new to dry dropper fishing. In my attempts I’ve tied some #10 parachute Adams and adding a #18 brass bead hares ear. Using a 7.5’ 4x leader, on a 7.5’ for 4wt fast action rod, I’m getting lots of lag in my presentation of the rig. For this size D/D rig, what size leader do you use? And any other advice would be appreciated. :)

Lately I've been fishing 7.5ft 3x tapered leader with a foot of 4x to my dry. If you're on Instagram I just shared a video of me explaining my rig which will also be in a future video...but scheduled to share in June.

@@LooknFishy Thanks for the info. Tight lines! :)
That stream is productive for brookies, you have to remember that the wild trout here in NC are not like the ones out west. They are easily spooked so try to stay out of the water as much as possible and stay close to cover. Sudden movements will spook them too. But 2in or 20in wild trout to the hand is always to get excited about. More than half of the people I come across don’t even catch a fish. NC has some great streams that will put any experience to the test. Especially in the Smoky Mountains!!!
