SECRETS to Finding Remote Streams - The Resources I use - My FAVORITE tool isn't fly fishing related

Спорт

In this video, I'll answer the number one question I get asked and share my SECRETS to Finding Remote Streams and the Resources I use. You might be surprised to learn that my FAVORITE tool isn't fishing related. Locating these less trafficked areas isn't nearly as difficult as most people think. With a little research and willingness to hike a little, most can find a spot that doesn't see much traffic. Hope this video helps others discover their own remote stream. Sat maps are very useful. A piece of advice I'd give is employ a concept, and pick atleast 3 new spots in an area that fit your criteria. Could be focusing on confluences or finding the uppermost hold of fish in a headwater, which paid off for me bigtime last year when i found a lone honeyhole where fish are fat, greedy, and impatient. Pressure is a huge factor, be willing to pass the first two miles before you even cast and eventually you will be rewarded.

We have added a ton of info to many of the sections to note what isn't posted or should be, types of fish and a few other snippets of info. Some insider info as well as many phone #'s and addresses of private property owners we have had contact with over the years. This way we can keep in touch as well as buttering up the opportunities of using their property in the future by sending a Christmas card and a few gift cards thanking them.

Since then I have done extensive research on the area so I would have more options when it happens again. Lots of great resources out there but like you said you have to think outside the box a little to find those unpressured waters. Several years ago I took up remote alpine lake fishing here in Colorado and use the same techniques for finding quality fisheries at that altitude. Totally agree with hiking forums as there's a wealth of info for the most part through observations such as "saw really nice trout cruising the shallows as we hiked by Lake John Doe." For lakes Google Earth is great - you just scan the ground until you see a lake that looks promising, get its name a do searches for that water, e.g. Lake John Doe CO + trout. Works well.

Didn’t bug people except private message and only if they offered help. I put 40k on the truck fishing almost every river in my province. Some trips were good some were a learning experience... lol. But getting out and trying new places was half the fun. Drove 1000kms one day looking for fishable water ended up at a stocked pond and only caught a minnow. But that’s the way it goes. Old forums were the best. Facebook you have to read between the lines. But don’t bug people on open social media not how it works for etiquette in my mind.

Always been curious how you go about finding spots! A key tool for my searches has been onX Hunt (phone app & online). It's designed for hunters to find public/private land but it's as invaluable for fishing. It is a paid for service for $30/yr giving you access to one state (CO for me) - the multi-state option is pricey @ $100/yr - but it's super detailed & accurate and has the ability to download offline maps. I've often found little chunks of say BLM land that traverse even major pieces of water surrounded by private land that take a bit of navigating to get to but often well worth the effort.

Good tips. There's a spot in North GA that is along these lines. On a well known trail with a great campsite ~3 miles from the nearest trailhead just down an unmaintained side trail so just close enough that the backpackers don't stop. I have never seen anyone else fish this stretch and would classify it as one of the 3 most productive streams in North Georgia.

Typically I buy the Non res annual. Like Wyoming, I purchased late Aug 2020 and fished 2 weeks and again 2 weeks early Aug in 2021. Some states end on the calendar year or on a specific date...Louisiana in June 1?, I believe Idaho is like that which kind of sucks.

Thanks for the info great video, do you ever use mobile Apps like Onix that show public lands or are the forestry maps pretty good?

I don't...know lots of people who do and they love it. But, keeping gopro batteries charged each day on multi week trips is hard enough for me...so I rarely use my cell, except to check in with family. Need to find a good recharging system for this summer.
