Implanted, Glucose Responsive Beta Cells

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I outline the results of a new possible stem cell-based therapy to cure type 1 diabetes. Viacyte's PEC-Direct therapy was tested for efficacy and tolerability. Clinicaltrials.gov identifier NIH NCT03163511.
This video summarises the paper: Implanted pluripotent stem-cell-derived pancreatic endoderm cells secrete glucose-responsive C-peptide in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Hi folks! Let me know your thoughts on the video, or anything else 😀 Are all of the cells in the implants beta cells? What else are the cells differentiating into? 🤨

It would likely be better to just revert our own old dormant pluripotent stem cells to young active ones again so that there are no possible negative outcomes and so our bodies can just use them where we need them most. New advanced health technologies like what I mentioned are already available, and have been for 4 years now.

The real question is why after 100 years of finding insulin still there is no cure for diabetes! Treatment of diabetes is a billion dollar business ( annually) for pharmaceutical companies I wonder if they would let that happen!!! They don’t care about people they just care about their profits!

1 person has been mostly cured. They gave him half the dose they were initially gonna give him. Should have gave him 70% and he would be completely healed.

Thank you for your insight. Have you read about the trial in Harvard university by Vertex Pharmaceuticals? Brian Sheldon was the first successful case in the early phases of the trial. Need no more insulin injections.

Thank you for a great explanation! In fact, I had sort of the same questions you pose at the end of your video, i.e. about the possibilities of not having to take inmunosupressing drugs and about how many of these devices would be tolerated in order to completely get rid of insulin pumps and CGMs. Another question is how long do these implants currently last and how often would we need to exchange them. Finally, looking way ahead, the million dollar question: what would be your best guess at a time period to have a final cure with no implants? 5 years is no loger credible!

I think that viacyte is trying to create one of those pods with bioengineered cells that they hope people won't reject, but it sounds like that is still early on in the effort. I'd love to know more about generating more beta cells of your own for type 2's. If they could produce the cells from your own blood/stem cells, they wouldn't be rejected. I've seen that type 2's don't have enough beta cells and perhaps that could help, albeit it wouldn't be a cure, but it could buy the type 2 more time if they are careful with what they eat.

Hello Dr. My question is the use of UCT and Peptides. Do UCT turn into beta cells? Do these injuctions bring relief to diabetes at all? And if so in what way. Thank you

Hello! What is UCT? could you please give me the definition of the acronym? From these results, it looks as if these implants reduce the amount of insulin required by people with diabetes, but it is not sufficient to replace the need for insulin shots entirely.
