Type 1 Diabetes: from Cubism to a cure | Robin Goland | TEDxMet

Dr. Robin Goland challenges us to see something in a whole new way. Robin is a medical doctor leading the charge to cure diabetes. Her work combines research with clinical care in a groundbreaking approach to medicine.
Robin Goland, MD leads one of the nation's most successful efforts to advance patient care, research, and education in the field of diabetes. The Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center opened in October 1998 under the direction of Dr. Goland and co-director Dr. Rudolph Leibel, combining premier family-centered patient care and education with world-class diabetes research programs. Today more than 1500 patients with diabetes are seen monthly. The clinical space is directly adjacent to research laboratories working on the prevention, treatment, and ultimately cure of diabetes.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    PS. There have been miracle cures all my life. Better to live well with diabetes than to keep looking for the cure. (I haven't got the expertise to look for a cure anyway! I'll hear about it when it happens.) Communicate well with your med team and stay informed, but wishing doesn't help. Once you're past the "grieving" stage of adjusting, then yes keep hoping the cure will be found while we're around, but don't put off your happiness until then. Get on with enjoying life with it.

    I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 21. It's stressful at times but I've adjusted as one does because I have to. My grandfather was also a type 1 diabetic (diagnosed as a child) and his mother initially treated it by basically starving him because there was no alternative. He started taking insulin as a teenager, but the only way to get any sense of one's blood sugar back then was with ketone tests, which basically tell you too little too late-if ketones are showing in your urine, then you've been too high for too long. He eventually died from ketoacidosis in his fifties because he did not manage himself. It is an admittedly awful disease that demands a lot of the patient all day, everyday, but I'm frankly just glad I was born in an age where I wasn't doomed to a young and painful death.

    Similarly, my great-grandmother was one of the first ever to have insulin. I'm very conscious that if I'd been born a few decades earlier, I'd have died before I was eight. There are worse things than living with diabetes. :)

    Dr Sebi found the cure to all disease, and your comment is exactly why he's not with us anymore. His legacy only remains in his lectures and interviews where he explains the cause of all disease, how to prevent it and how to cure it. The 3 things you have to avoid to cure any disease is giving up animal products, GMO's and Hybrid plants made in a lab like carrots. Dr Sebi made a nutritional guide which you can find on his website. Though the fastest way to recover from any disease is to water fast for months. Dr Sebi fasted with type 2 diabetes and other diseases for 3 months and he cured himself of all his diseases. I watched all his material and cured myself of all my diseases with a 2 week fast. I cured Hyperthyroidism, Myasthenia Gravis, Edema of the feet, and peeing the bed which Id done since I was very little until I was 29. The only thing I did not cure was type 1 diabetes, but this disease will require a much longer fast than 2 weeks. I am going to fast soon to get rid of Type 1 by fasting for 1 month hopefully but I will fast for 2 - 3 months if I have to. Theres many type 1 diabetics that have fasted for 1-2 weeks on youtube. You can listen to their story. But its not hard to water fast for that long without any food. Though I would recommend intermittent fasting before you just start an extended fast. You should get your body used to not eating for hours at a time. Id start with grazing for 8 to 6 hours and then fasting for the rest of the day. So you'd be cramming all of your food for the day into that eating window of 8-6 hours and then not eating until that starting time again. So if you started to eat at say 2pm and you stopped eating at 8pm, you wouldnt eat again until 2pm the next day. I would then suggest that you shorten the window to an hour or two. This is usually called "OMAD" fasting or "One Meal a Day" fasting, as you're fasting for about 23 hours a day and eating for one to two hours or even just 30 minutes. Getting to one meal a day will prepare your body for an extended fast. This is what I did, though I had no intention of extended fasting before I learned about fasting to cure, I had already been doing OMAD fasting because I learned that intermittent fasting extends your life span and while you're fasting your sugars are stable, which I like as a diabetic lol. When you start your water fast though, you must drink lots of water, you dont want to get dehydrated. Id never recommend anyone doing a dry fast either, those are extremely dangerous and we're trying to keep our dangers down while fasting lol. I would recommend that you take some Glucose tablets while fasting if you think you could go into hypoglycemia. I didnt have to take any glucose tablets while I fasted for 14 days because the liver will release sugar into the blood to raise your blood sugar, its how non diabetics get their blood sugar raised without eating anything. But if your sugar goes below 60 id say just to be safe to eat a tablet. Make sure to chew it really good, we dont want to actually engage our stomach on a water fast. Make sure to check your blood sugar constantly, you want to be in complete control while fasting. Dont leave anything to chance. It would also be a good idea to check your blood pressure to make sure its normal. Also make sure you have your ketone strips, I didnt go into DKA when I fasted and didnt check for ketones but I think that you all should check to prevent you from going into DKA, none of us want that. Also some people like to take "Pink Himalayan Sea Salt" while they're fasting for the trace minerals. Hopefully this message will help a few people willing to fast to cure this terrible disease. Good luck everyone

    Unfortunately, doctor's have been telling us that they think they'll be a cure "in the next 10 years", since my FATHER was diagnosed in the 1940's. In all that time, from the point of view of the diabetic, treatment has not changed noticeably. :( Nor have the complications. My father died of Kidney disease, I have Retinopathy and will be blind, eventually. Diabetes DOES HURT. And we PAY FOR THE PRIVILEGE of that hurt. I am forced to pay for a Doctor's appointment, or they refuse to give me prescriptions, that I've been taking for 30 years... That now cost 10 times (or more) than they did OVER THE COUNTER, 10 years ago. "In the future" has been spouted to me, and mine, for 30 YEARS! Damn you, and yours, for using hope and the misery of children to profit. Damn. You.

    In 1964, shortly after my T1D diagnosis, I remember the nurse in my pediatrician's office explaining to my mother and me that "they're working on a cure," and suggesting that a cure might be available in 10 or 20 years. The science is moving fast and stem-cell research is promising. Dr. Goland stated that she has treated patients who have had T1D for 40 and 50 years, and that newly diagnosed patients will not have the disease this long. Research and clinical trials take years and Dr. Goland never suggested that a cure is around the corner.

At the age of 16, my son was suffering from the same respiratory infection I was experiencing at the time. He happened to spend the night at his cousin's house. In the middle of the night he woke with a severe asthmatic reaction and was rushed to the emergency room where steroids were administered to open his airway. I believe his lowered immune and respiratory system reacted to the long haired cats at his cousin's, thus creating the situation. He had never had prior asthma or breathing problems. Within two weeks of this incident and receiving the steroids, he started experiencing symptoms of diabetes. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, though through a research program it was discovered he still has functioning beta cells. There is absolutely NO history of diabetes on my, or his father's, side of the family. Unrelated to this incident, but a curiosity to me...A friend had steroid shots in a painful knee. Within a few weeks she started experiencing fatigue and other symptoms. She was diagnosed with an acute leukemia and died a few months later. Most doctors have shrugged their shoulders at any possible connection between steroids and these incidents. I believe there is a connection, especially since diabetes is related to an immune disorder.

    Does anyone know if there has ever been a cure for a disease before that has previously been treatable only and generated a lot of money in the process (like type 1 diabetes)? Because a lot of people argue that the pharma industry will never let a cure happen. So I am wondering if this has actually ever happened in the first place or if it always has been "prevented". Because if it did happen, there's a chance it might happen again.

    Why does the immune system target just the islet cells.. And not the rest of the pancreas

  • @BxrHavik

    @BxrHavik

    4 жыл бұрын

    Its caused because people eat cheese / drink milk. Animal milk cells look like the beta cells of the pancreas. Animal milk and all animal products are a threat to the body because they are highly acidic (you're not designed to eat animals regardless of the lies you've been fed your entire life) and your body sees this as an intruder and it attacks the animal cells, the milk cells looking just like the beta cells as I said and eventually your body will start to attack the pancreas beta cells in someone who eats and excessive amount of cheese / milk because it thinks your beta cells are the intruder. The reason I'm type 1 diabetic is because I would eat animal milk with my cereal for nearly ever meal. I hated the idea of eating animals growing up so I would eat cereal (I didnt understand at that age the horrible things that even dairy cows go through and that all dairy cows are murdered after 4 years). So I would eat cereal like 3 times a day, all year round, even in winter until I was 17 and I nearly died because of undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes. Its even a miracle I'm even still here with a blood sugar of over a thousand. I looked like spongebob in The Spongebob Movie where spongebob gets taken out of water and he's laying there on the table and his lips are curled and it looks like all his moisture has been removed. Thats literally what I looked like with no exaggeration, I couldnt even talk when I was talking to the person at the front desk when I went into the hospital shortly before I died, I couldnt talk and my tongue got permanently stuck to the roof of my mouth. Ive since died another time since then from DKA and It's been my goal to cure all my diseases I got after that and I have. I've cured them all with a water fast for 2 weeks. Type 1 diabetes is all thats left. I cured Myasthenia Gravis, Hyperthyroidism, Edema of the feet and peeing the bed which I'd done my entire life nearly every night. All of them were gone after my two week fast though. Fasting will cure anything even type1 diabetes, I just have to fast for longer this time which I'm doing very soon. I plan to fast for 1-3 months, however long it takes. But there is a cure for everything, just the information has been hidden form us. Luckily knowing that fasting cures everything means we can cure all our diseases with it. Though if you want to stay cured you will have to stop eating animals or their byproducts. All diseases stem from eating animals. There are a lot of documentaries out now since the vegan movement exploded a few years ago that show conclusive evidence that a vegan, preferably raw vegan, diet can cure incurable diseases.

It's the junk that they're feeding these cows and these chickens and these pigs that's making the meat poisonous and bad for you rather than the organic grass-fed grass finished cows and chickens and pigs who eats strictly organic grass with no chemicals and are allowed to roam freely without restriction.

    What is the point of this presentation? For 80 there have been no advances in the science of diabetes, but we recently started working, so don’t worry!! Please don’t give a public speech unless a sound solution has been discovered. All the potential solutions showcased near the end of the video are still challenged, so what is actually required to move forward, faster ? Funding ? Human Resources ? Help with regulation ? .... the actual point of this video is just to tell her bravo and thank you for your efforts
