Is a functional cure for Type 1 Diabetes on the horizon? | Paul Laikind | TEDxSanDiegoSalon

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that leads to a loss of beta cells in the pancreas. These beta cells are part of a cellular complex that produce insulin, an essential hormone that regulates our blood sugar, keeping it within a narrow range, and thus allowing normal bodily functions to occur. To survive, patients must monitor and control their diet, track physical activity, carefully regularly measure their blood sugar levels, and inject the appropriate amount of insulin. But Paul Laikind and his team at ViaCyte are working on a functional cure that involves the use of stem cells which become pancreatic cells that can mature and produce insulin in a normal manner. Paul K. Laikind, Ph.D. has over 30 years of leadership experience in the biotechnology and life sciences industry in San Diego. He currently serves as President, CEO and a member of the Board of ViaCyte, Inc. a leading company in the emerging field of regenerative medicine. Prior to joining ViaCyte, Dr. Laikind served as Chief Business Officer and Senior Vice President of Business Development at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Being a child and knowing our life has been cut by 10 or more years takes a toll on us that many people don’t understand. I would never be able to say thank you enough to the people fighting for a cure for type 1 diabetes if they actually developed a successful cure. It would mean the world to everyone with this disability.

Chris Bauer mate stop it. Please just stop. As a type 1 I’m begging you. Acknowledge the fault in lifestyle so this epidemic has a shot at being something that’s no longer profitable to treat for big pharma when people realise that it’s entirely preventable. Type 2’s are a big flabby cash cow and it’s only getting more lucrative while those chubby hands are reaching for more pies saying “Oh well it’s genetic anyway. Not my fault if I get it” Type 2 is the reason why they haven’t cured type 1 yet. Your thinking is killing us.

@@MrStockoHMK I just acknowledged that most of the insulin resistance in type 2's is caused by lifestyle. The thing is, type 2 does also run in families. This is because the pancreas can't keep up with the level of insulin resistance in people who are genetically predisposed. It shouldn't be an excuse for avoiding a healthier lifestyle though just like you said. Type 2 runs in my family. My dad had type 2 in his 30's and died from coronary heart disease at 41. I am 19 years old and live a healthy lifestyle. I'm not overweight, if anything i've been borderline underweight lately. I'm non-diabetic and yet I still get above average glucose spikes to over 200 quite frequently. Many people I have tested who eat far worse than me pretty much stay at around 100 no matter what they eat. So I am direct evidence that the impaired first phase insulin response does indeed run in families long before they are diagnosed as type 2. I'm planning on continuing my healthy lifestyle to avoid progressing to type 2.

@@MrStockoHMK Are you being serious? While Type 2 diabetes might not be as difficult to manage as type 1, you have to realise what your thinking could do to someone with type 2's mental health. Type 2 can be caused simply by genetics and environmental factors that are out of a person's control just like type 1. The way you are speaking could easily cause people with type 2 diabetes to feel incredibly guilty when sometimes, it's out of there control. And even if their type 2 was caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, putting the blame on them isn't helping anyone, and just makes them feel worse about themselves.

Hi Stephanie Orr, by curiosity how old are your children(more or less, I don t want to be too intrusive). Here I give you the link of a video where the doctor explains in french, how far we are from a cure. Understand that doctors don t want to give "fake hopes" to patients but having red many articles about this topic that had been send by friends of mine who are doctors, they are probably close to a cure. In the video, the immunologist doctor explains that they gonna find a cure thanks to cell therapy, he expected a decade when they made the interview in the end of 2012. Already 7 years and with the research the cure will probably come before 2030 I don t know when of course but immunologists are quiet optimistic about that.

I think the long term solution will be to grow a new pancreas with geno alternations and implant it. However scientists are now relying on probiotics and are seeing powerful positive results as these microbes hv a greater ability to clean up, bind to, or detox the human body of toxins. Many Lactobacillus bacteria hv these capabilities, especially Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Streptococcus Thermophillus. These 2 strains are common found in live Plain yogurt.

Ive had type 1 diabetes for 39 years. I have almost died from it several times. I have a firm belief in god and believe I have been helped several times to have lasted this long with no major health issues. I have yet to have any typical major health issue from it. I do work hard every day though to manage it and learn new things to help me do better with it. That said, though I am hopeful for a cure im skeptical on weather there will truly ever be one. Why? because its a multi billion dollar industry for the pharmaceutical companies. Insulin and test strips for instance don't cost anywhere close to make compared to the mark up they put on it.

I agree completely. That is why I avoide discussing the cure or watching videos or interviews about it. Ofcourse I can't but help watching sometimes. For years they keep saying that the cure is ALMOST found. If that were the case they would've found it already. Or at least if they wanted to. I know it sounds like some conspiracy theory but unfortunately it only makes sense. I don't think they should get the hopes up for people like this.

I had something called Diffuse CH which means that my pancreas made too much insulin because my beta cells were glucose blind and produced insulin no matter what. I had to have my pancreas removed when I was 5 weeks old. So I am treated as a type one diabetic, so if they made a cure that affected beta cells it would do nothing for me so I just have to hope that some day they will be able to find some way to cure my condition.

Diabetes type 1 and 2 can be cured. So Say the experts. 2 Canadian Doctors that work at 'Sick Kids' hospital are neuro scientists. They have discovered before 2006 that concentrated capsaicin from Chilies injected into pancreatic organs of rats with diabetes type 1, had their diabetes REVERSED within 24 hours. You can google 'Dr Michael Dosch and Capsaicin'. In 2006 they 'carefully' made know to the public that they were totally amazed at what they had found! One single high dose of Capsaicin awokened or activated the Pancreatic nervous system and it started producing Insulin AGAIN. Dr Dosch didn't elaborate..... I wrote to him and still waiting for his reply.... In the Philipines around 5 years ago, Dr. Jaime Dy-Liacco, Doctor of Metabolic Medicine, an 82 year old, told the public (free of charge) that Chillies and Sea salt mixed together in high dose can reverse Diabetes. He explains that Diabetes can be reversed when you fix the mineral deficiencies such as Zn, Chromium, Vanadium, Manganese, Germanium, and copper. If you google these trace minerals separately and look at PUBMED scientific research papers you'll see lots of evidence proving that these trace minerals are Crucial for Glucose tolerance, enzymatic reactions and the body's hormonal system. Different people might have different deficiencies. Even Lithium plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism, and there are others like Mg etc etc... Putting it all together, this is what you can do: Take about 300g of Red spicy chilli. Cut into small pieces and put it in a sterilised GLASS jar. Cover with 20% Alcoholic Rice wine. The wine will Extract the Spicy Capsaicim. Add about 5 Table Spoons of UNREFINED ORGANIC SEA SALT (which contains about 80 + natural minerals with trace minerals that are really hard to find in today's diet and drinking water. Cover and Place in warm place. In about 7 days time, you can consume use 1 table spoon of this liquid several times a day with a little food and water. I'd do this for about about 7-14 days and repeat the recipe if necessary. Monitor your glucose level after the 1st 24 hours and every day afterwards. In addition to this I will Make a green leafy Smoothie with 2 Table Spoons of Assorted Seeds, like Pumpkin seeds (high in ZN and Mg), Sunflower, seeds, Flax seeds, Sesame seeds, Poppy seeds (high in Chromium) and Fennel Seeds, with a couple of bananas for taste. Take this at least 2ce daily. * The 1st recipe will activate your Pancreatic Nerves. And the Sea SALT will Supply Missing TRace elements to restore Pancreatic Cellular Function. * The 2nd recipe will help Supplement additional NATURAL concentrated trace minerals to your daily diet. Do NOT TAKE artificial Supplements. It can be dangerous and upset the delicate Homeostatic Mineral Balance and make your condition worse. Eat a diet hight in Whole unrefined Plant-Based Foods, with plenty of Spices and Herbs for additional minerals. Avoid Milk, Wheat, Soy, Peanuts and unrefined processed foods and sugars that serve as ANTI-Nutrients and block your body's ability to absorb vitamins and minerals. Stop and reduce all forms of medications and drugs that interfere with Mineral absorption. Look for natural alternatives and home remedies. Supplement with 3g Sodium Ascorbate (VitC) every 4-6 hours , and 5 g of Mg Chloride every 6 hours. This will drastically reduce Intra-Cellular Inflammation and allow Pancreatic Cells to regenerate Faster. If you experience loose bowels, this will be normal, but if it continues after 3 days or so, reduce the dosage of VIT C and Mg. Bless you!!! Get well!

This is my 56th year living with Type 1 diabetes. About 20 ago, my endocrinologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital referred me to the hospital's islet-cell transplant program. After completing an application and attending a meeting with endocrine surgeons and endocrinologists, the transplant team explained that because I had no complications other than hypoglycemia unawareness, the risks of taking immunosuppressants outweighed the benefits of an islet cell transplant. So much for maintaining tight control. Even if scientists perfect a way to encapsulate and transplant islet cells, the procedure would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and only the wealthy would benefit. Thousands of people with Type 1 diabetes are uninsured, and health insurers would deny coverage for most people with private and employer plans. Can you imagine Aetna, Blue Cross or United paying millions of dollars each year for transplants? Not if it reduces their CEO's annual multi-million dollar salaries, which often exceed $20,000,000.

I would think the public outrage would be incredibly high towards health insurers. Have read that over 14 billion is the yearly cost from diabetes - supplies to lost work to emergency room visits. I would think healthcare would want to lessen that. Add in the numbers of type 1 diagnosed is increasing yearly. The government should buy down the phrama costs immediately to reduce that 14 billion number. Also the waste produced by insulin supplies.

Get well!

First I would like to thank you for your efforts and really believe your on the right track for a cure. I actually thought of something similar to what your doing when I read about an artificial liver that was created using some kind of 3D printer in a lab and the same kind of stem cells you spoke of. I thought well why can’t they take these blank stem cells in this 3D printer and create a pancreas for type 1 diabetics? I thought if they are using the blank stem cells of that individual to create the organ for said individual then it would be less likely to be refused by that individuals body. That’s how I figured it would work but then again I’m no scientist. That being said though what you and your team came up with really brought back that memory and as a type 1 diabetic that’s having a difficult time even getting insulin supplies, I really do hope and pray you are successful in your mission. I’d even volunteer for testing if at all possible. Please keep up the good work and don’t let anything get in your way. God bless you all.

As a Type One Diabetic, There is no feeling as hopeful and at the same time hopeless as the idea of a cure somehow happening. People have no idea how expensive this disease is, how much it holds a person back in life and how we are never able to really do anything without extensive planning. I guess we have to wait and see what happens.
