These remain the best special effects I've ever seen.
I have to admit, this cgi is one of my favourites. It's so fascinating and brilliant.
Not true. 100% of Davy Jones is computer generated in 100% of the shots in both "Dead Man's Chest" and "At World's End". There was a plan 'B' in place in case we wanted to utilize the actor's eyes in some shots in "Dead Man's Chest" but that plan was never enacted. Thanks!
I can't believe that all that was computer generated... I thought they just edited the face.. damn they are amazing
My only reaction: Well, you succeeded! Pirates of the Caribbean is the most realistic and hilarious film(s) I've ever seen, and they all look so real!! It's amazing how you guys have done this.
Actually, all of Davy Jones was "animated" as he is entirely a CG character. His eyes and every other part of him seen on screen is a 100% digital creation.
I agree with many of the people here that Davy Jones is the best animated character i've seen so far in any realistic animation movie. Also the Flying Dutchman, which is based on real folklore is a really interesting! It would be cool to know the exact history of each character, although they might not be as interested as Jones or Jack :x
NOBODY MOVE! I lost my brain.
Technology these days is truly amazing.
Davy Jones is just one of the best CG Creatures ever seen on screen. You don`t recognice it for a second he is CG. Thanks for sharing your magic!
Would skills in 3Ds max, pftrack, boujou, zbrush, after effects, photoshop etc be useful for that? or does it have to be Maya, nuke etc? Thanks
We use a combination of commercial software and proprietary software developed in house. Thanks.
The Coral Reef-looking guy at 1:27 is my absolute favorite crewman (Besides Jones of course). You guys did an absolutely astounding job with the effects in these films especially because (like you said) you suggest a history to every one of the characters you may only see for a few seconds, making any subsequent viewings all the better. Bravo.
Mergers death I found scary as hell
Davy Jones scared my little cousin to death and I had to show him this to prove that he was fake! Thanks for all the cinematic magic ILM! AND GOOD LUCK ON PACIFIC RIM!
Unfortunately, we do not release details regarding our proprietary technology.
Indeed we did and yes it's been discontinued for some time. We've now use Nuke, Inferno/Flame, After Effects and some proprietary software for our comp work. Thanks!
It is so awesome what we can do with CG nowadays... we can take anything within our imagination and bring it to life on computer with a bit of dedication and hard-work... oh, and lot's of "cup of noodles". I wish I had the skills to do this... I have so many ideas I want to have realized, but sadly, I don't think I would be capable of making this my profession...
Great CG, congratulations on your work! I wish I was as patient and passionate as you guys are.
@4enrik To do that would be missing the point. It all comes down to the talented artists that use these sophisticated tools. It's kind of like asking a painter what brand of brush she uses...
All of the information is over on the jobs site - Reels and/or online portfolios
If the track points on the face turned too far or where blocked from the camera, how was ILM able to keep them consistently tracked
Correct, what you ultimately see on screen in the final shots is 100% computer generated.
I never knew animation goes this far. Amazing.
BEAUTIFUL WORK
ILM you guys did a fantastic job!
How long does it take to render a frame of Davy Jones? I'd imagine it to be quite some time, considering the detail.
This is completely cool. Love it! ♡
please bring this technology in gaming
Yes we did.
That's part of our patented Imocap system.
Awseome making vfx is one of the difficult job 2 do in this world RESPECT
What programs do you guys use for 3D modelling and animation?
ILM's Zeno, Shake, Maya and a number of other proprietary packages.
the most amazing ever never stops amazing me this character i love it he barely looks fake only in certain daylight scenes i find the sun light make the characters look fake the shadow detail looks fake but sometimes maybe the technology limites artist in that aspect but sometimes is imposible to say is cgi looks too real
Recall seeing it mentioned somewhere (I think by Hal Hickel) that Davy Jones had 46 tentacles. Is this correct or is the real number unknown? Sorry if this seems like a silly question, but I am interested in knowing if this is true or speculation. I must say, this is great. It's amazing to know that almost everything about Jones was CGI, save for Nighy's incredible performance. Thanks for uploading this, ILM! :)
Veri good video! so well eplained! Thak you...I have a question: to realize Imocap scene is it enought the main camera shooting (35 mm camera) or you need some added cameras as in traditional mocap? I mean: is it enought a camera to receive all 3d data of the actor's movements? Thank you bery very much
yeah it is just amazing how they do this CG stuff it is just awesome
What took longer to render? Davy Jones or Devastator? And how long?
Nearly 300.
I'm pretty savy about special effects, but I was shocked to learn that Davey Jones was mostly CGI. I thought it was practical effects with CGI enhancements. Davey Jones and his crew is some of the best special effects in recent memory.
Thank you for all your hard work.
Animating those tentacles to interact with each other looks so much fun. :D
this was some of the best cg, creating this character....
Keep up the good work, you will see me in the future, making blockbuster hits.
ILM Rocks, can't wait for their Transformers 3 secrets
Wwo never knew that Davy was 100% CGi ! Awesome Job ILM !
Any tips for a beginner vfx artist? Like what programs should be used? And what are some good colleges are good?
best CGI ive ever seen
amazing Job...! thanks for the movies..!!!
Now you can. : ) Enjoy!
How do you create a scene like the death of Mercer?
@tyrant351
10 жыл бұрын
That's a legitimately good question. Perhaps they had greenscreened actors manipulating Mercer's face (his eyes, mouth corners, the "pulled" parts) who were rendered transparent.
Did you render Davy's tentacles in Maya or something else ? and how did you made sure the tentacles don't cross each other ?
@Necronom23 Couldn't agree more! He still is my all time favorite CGI character! Pure genius!
this guy..is my animator idol
ILM to movies is like Atari to video games.
Incredible
Amazing!
They used his eyes for some close up shots, I believe.
Oh man, so cool.....@ :36 was that Zbrush? or do you guys use your own proprietary software for sculpting displacements?
how long did it take to animate every part of davy jones's face ? from 0:03 to 0:22
What software do you use for this awesomeness? I it specially developed for you? Or do you use something like Maya or 3DS MAX?
Wow...
Both ZBrush and our own in-house packages.
love it!
The devasator for sure I think it was 72 hours per frame and that is hell of a lot!
I LOVE THIS I WISH I CAN BE THIS GOOD
isn't that footage from Pirates 2? And yeah Davy Jones looks unbelievable
Davy Jones was without a doubt some of most closest to real cg I have seen. Already several years past and I don't believe any recent films comes close to matching.
@ILMVisualFX I am a artist and I have no problem recommending good brushes :) And Just so you know ILM use a verity of tools many are written by their own programers but the off the shelf tools include but not limited to 3ds Max, Maya and also Apple's final cut pro for editing live footage with the CG. They also use a lot of Python scripting as well as other programing to develop tools specifically needed to fill a need in a particular film or project.
that guy,he is my CG animator idol :)
Kelp Brain!
coolest job ever
I am deeply into film/3D animation and i was wondering how much time you guys say it would take to do a CG Live Action actor sequence? I did something similar but it took me days to do and it was only 23 seconds.
I believe you guys developed your own software.
Both.
I new a lot of it was cgi but not 100% of it awsome!
Is there a college or school your team would recommend to become a concept artist?
0:33 Morey 0:34 Manray and two dutchman crew members with no known name 0:37 Another crew member with no known name 1:02 Broondjogen 1:08 Jelly I would really like to know the names of those three guys
Is there some tutorial on how you use the Imocap system?
@4enrik start with softwares like maya and 3d max to create and animate your imagination, then you can use adobe after effects(and softwares alike) to place your animation to real life footage... time consuming though its fun
man you have style :P
I'd say I'm 15% done with step one, but I'm only 16... I have plenty of time to improve myself!
You must have a very customized "shake", because Apple discontinued that software long time ago, isn'it?
Do you guys use boujou or your tracking software?
those looks too real to be computer generated, amazing
All though I didn't enjoy pirates of the caribbean 3 and would only give the film's writing a 3/10 the Technical Side of the Film and the VFX are Superb 10/10 on the technical side.
I would like to know how to do vfx so if any one knows someone who can help i would love that.

guido van der wal And or go to a good college that teaches movie animation, lighting, editing, composting, grading, etc. ;)
I imagine his crew smells equally bad.
Anybody here seen John Carpenter's 'The Thing?' The CG in this film is amazing, but it would be cool if there was more physical effects now days.
What is name of the wearing/thing that jack is wearing at 2:20 (this one with black and white circles that help to track the face)
Soo.... why the mocap cloth ?
was it hard to make barbossa's crew?
Any chance you have an exact number of how many you've done so, far, how many have been Oscar nominated and how many have won? Doing a speech on you guys and most of my numbers are over 4 years old.
do you shoot video in 4k or 8k?
cool
Seriously at 1:34 how is it possible to rotoscope that tiny little hair sticking out of the side of the blond guy's head on the right side? I've never understood how that's done.
When he said 100% cgi for the crew, it was nothing real? Like Davy's clamp-hand, the real hand of Bill Nighy was tied or something like this? Maybe something hanging for the tentacles or clothing?
davy is my brother.
@JavierLuisBravo me too
