IKEA Kitchen Cabinet Filler Trim Build Hack

Ойын-сауық

In order to get this kitchen wrapped up and looking good we needed to use some filler trim pieces. What that meant is that we first had to learn how to do it. In this video we wanted to share how we went about the task.

Thank you for your explanation and detailed drawings! I've been dreaming of redoing the 94-square-foot kitchen in my 100+ year old home, so I've been searching out videos showing all possible good, bad, and ugly situations that I could run into. Odd gaps to fill is something that will most likely happen, and thanks to you this approach is a beautiful solution. Keep up the great content!

Thank you so much for your kind words. It is amazing how much of a job comes down to the visual finish details. A separate skill set from the core construction work. You got it! All the best - Matt & Kat (Things).

I'll agree, the sketches are very useful. I'm just finishing an IKEA build myself. I got lucky though: I didn't need to do any big closeouts. Where my primary runs come together, there's a sink near the corner on one leg, and the stove (lined up with the vent duct) on the other leg, so I couldn't use an IKEA corner cabinet. Instead I made one by using a 36" wide cabinet, having one door obstructed by the cabinet going in the other direction, and adding a post in the middle so the door that does open hinges at the corner, not at the stove (which would make access to the cabinet tougher). The way things ended up, I had a 1/2" extra on either side of that corner.... very tight but it worked.

Wow. Sounds like a very creative solution. I am not in love with my IKEA corner cabinet. I love the lazy Susan and the space - but the hinging doors seem a bit heavy for the provided hinges and they have had to adjust them once. Overall still very happy. I am getting to the other kitchen in this duplex project and am considering building my own cabinets this time 😳. We will see. All the best - Matt & Kat (Things).

Just wondering if there was enough space on the far end for something like a custom, single-stack wine rack. Just thinking that might have been a little easier, but your finished product worked great.

There wasn’t enough room for anything from the IKEA catalog. I think their skinniest item is 9”. Perhaps I could have made something custom - but by the end of this project I was ready to be done 😂. I’m actually designing a second IKEA kitchen now for the other unit (this is a duplex). On the cabinet to the wall trim/filler, what if you were to bring the side panel out further and put the trim between the panel and the wall so you could hide you pin nails in the same manner that was done for the filler between the cabinets. seems like it would be a more consistent look? also, do the same for the upper cabinet to the wall. Do you see any pitfalls to that idea? i'm about to start installing this system and thanks for the usefull info.

Richard - thank you for the comment. I certainly understand what you are saying - there was an opportunity for me to make the two trim pieces more uniform as you described. Honestly it just didn’t occur to me at the time. Good news is that with the micro sized pin nails - the nails are nearly invisible just a few feet back. As far as trimming the uppers - I did consciously decide not to do that. I held a mock-up of a trim profile in place and IMO it made the cabinet look off balance and non-symmetrical since only the wall side would have the trim. The resulting gap and floating look appealed to me in the end. All the best on your project. Matt & Kat (Things).

IKEA cabinets are not the cheapest - but IMO the best value for the money. They are well built, have a durable finish, are very versatile, look great, and have excellent hardware. Unfortunately, I have experienced and heard anecdotally on you tube that availability it at an all time low - especially kitchen cabinets. Not sure if this is true in your region. In past projects I have purchased the Lowes unfinished cabinets and finished them myself. Probably one of the most affordable options. Not the best but definitely can get you a nice livable kitchen that could be upgraded in the future. Also - check out what Al did on Lumnah Acres (KZread) recently with his ready to assemble (RTA) cabinets. Very nice. For my next project (another kitchen) I plan to buy a tracksaw and a pocket hole jig and try to make them all myself. Good luck. All the best - Matt & Kat (Things).

I see the screws hold the filler to the cabinet walls but waht holds the front filler piece t the side ones? Did you use glue?

All I used was my 23 gauge pin nailer. That way there is (virtually) nothing to see from the side. I didn’t use any glue because I didn’t think it would bond well with the ultra smooth finish of the IKEA filler panels. Love the pin nailer. All the best - Matt & Kat (Things)

I didn’t use any glue - didn’t think it would have much grab against the finished edge of the material. Not sure that is the best way 🙂. Couldn’t hurt I guess. Thanks for writing - all the best - Matt & Kat (Things)

I hate Ikea kitchen cabinets. Couldn't wait to get them out of my life. Way too many reasons for my hate. First, their particle board is incredibly cheap. God forbid you get any of that board wet, water will destroy it, turning it to dust. Second, the melamine coating is very difficult to cut without chipping. Better have super-fine, high quality tools, and tape those cuts. Third, their white melamine discolors so quickly, especially if you cook. It yellows badly. They change their styles too often. If you need to do simple replacement, you have to buy a whole new kitchen to get things to match. Have I mentioned how much I hate Ikea kitchens?

I see you definitely do not like them :-) They have worked very well for me. The thing that convinced me was looking at Ikea kitchens in Europe that have 10+ years on them. All that I have seen have stood up very well. Nearly all consumer - non custom- cabinets are made from the same chip board - but are not 3/4” thick like Ikea. Water is something that has to be considered even with solid wood cabinets. In the end I get it - they ain’t for everyone. Thanx for the comments. All the best - Matt & Kat (Things).

WOW! Thank you so much! We decided to use the SEKTION style kitchen cabinets to build our bedroom wall closet and drawer system. I will have to fill parts of the full wall as our cabinets will cover 120" out of 135" (wall to wall without the 3/4 X 8" trim boards on the bottom. I will have to make a scribe to match it. This video is so helpful and creative! I will try to do the same. My project consists of 2= 30w X 24d X 90h cabinets which I will install at both ends of the wall and 2= 30w X 24d X 30h which I will sandwich in the middle. I have 15" to spread around in order to fill the whole space and make it nice and finished like a built in. Since I will be butting a high cabinet with a lower one, I am wondering how to put the filler piece on the high one where it will be exposed. Should I cut the filler piece the length of the exposed area or should I run the filler below the counter thickness and butt the end of the counter top to the filler peice? I am sorry for the long question but heck a woman can always ask???😊😊😊And by the way... It looks fantastic you are a master!

Thank you for the kind words. I THINK I know what you are describing. Since all your cabinets are the same depth then matching the final closed door face plane may “leveled” as I used. The countertop would run over the gap and the installed trim pieces and terminate into the side of the 90”. Another - maybe more typical approach is to use a tall cover panel (90”) against the side of your tall cabinet between the tall end cabinet and the shorter one to its (left or right) for instance. - for a left tall cabinet - the tall panel goes on its right side - standing proud of the face of the base cabinet 3/4” so that door face would be flush when installed. This panel would in effect replace the left piece of the square trim box I built - the difference is that this left piece would go “floor to top”. The face piece and right piece of the trim box would be below the countertop height. The countertop terminates against the cover panel attached to side of tall cabinet. Hard to explain. I hope I understood your situation- perhaps i don’t. Let me know if this makes sense. All the best - Matt & Kat (Things).
