I’m a professional cabinet maker. One thing I would highly encourage people to do when assembling any kind of knock down cabinet is to glue the carcass components together. Because much of the material is melamine, the use of a good quality melamine glue is advised. You’d be absolutely amazed as how sturdy this stuff becomes when it’s all glued together. Works wonders on Ikea furniture you won’t need to disassemble. Glue it all together neatly and you’d be surprised how sturdy the stuff is!!

10 years ago when we looked into reno our old kitchen in our first house, went to one of the "well known" brand got a quote for 30k CAD with 8 weeks plus lead time. Went to IKEA and got everything for 5k, installed all the cabinets in one week. even after 6 years of usage, the cabinets were still in top shape, everything held well when we sold it. For price and quality, there is nothing can beat it IMO. Will definitely buy them again when we built our next home.

not my IKEA stuff.. I have children and a very active kitchen and those cabinets barely lasted a year before they started showing their wimpy finish and garbage quality. The particle board door do not survive nicks and bumps. If your dishwasher hose ever fails or you have a bad plumbing day, the micro-layer of finish is not enough to keep the particle board from swelling even 1 spill sitting for over a half hour. If you live in Arizona or a dry area... its even worse. The particle board turns to dust. Unless you have a kitchen just for eating take out and looks (not cooking, raising kids and living in...) spend the extra money on real laminates and / or real wood. I DO highly recommend their counter tops and their appliances. I got a beautiful quartz counter and very hip appliances (made by whirlpool) all my fixtures are IKEA.... it's just their cabinetry that was horrible!

We had our Ikea kitchen installed about two years ago. We too visited the well known suppliers and got absolutely insane quotes. So it was off to Ikea. You measure your kitchen and have a good idea of where you want everything. Make an appointment with one of their design staff. They input your ideas and measurements into a computer and can instantly give you a quote. We went with meter high wall cabinets instead of the usual 80 centimeters, more storage space! Their base cabinets are lower to the floor than standard cabinets, more storage space! We had two drawers installed under the oven for pan lids and shallow oven crockery, more storage space! We used fifty mil worktops instead of the usual 75 mil, cheaper and does the same job. We went with flat white handleless cabinets, looks neater and easier to clean. All doors and drawers have silent closing. Now before your kitchen is installed the fitter visits and checks your measurements to make sure everything will fit. (What? You have never made a mistake with a tape measure.) Two important points about Ikea. They will not try to sell you anything, they will however endeavor to provide you with what you want. Secondly, when the job is done there are always bits and pieces left over, they are individually wrapped with bar codes. Take them back to Ikea and get a refund! We got sixty one quid back, now who else will do that for you? And of course everything has a twenty five year warranty. Would I recommend Ikea? Is the Pope Catholic?

That extra screw you had left over goes on the bottom of the drawer through the back metal piece. It secures the bottom wooden panel to the metal drawer back. Keep up the good work.

Stand up applause for sharing the fumbles! Clap......clap.......clap.....(everyone joins in on the applause)...clap.....cheers!!! One thing I suggest for people watching on using a battery driver, make sure it IS a driver with a strength adjustment, and not a drill or hammer drill as Jeff is using. Jeff is using a variable trigger, and he has expereince on the force and can control it, and if he doesn't you WILL easily damage the panel. For example, Black&Decker has a cheap $25-35 driver, and that set on "2" strength will keep the MDF from stripping so you don't have to worry about over-driving the screws. It has it up to "10" strength AND has a drill setting. FYI, 10 years ago IKEA MDF was MUCH higher quality with a lot of glue that was better than custom ordering from other hardware stores, and it was much cheaper. Our kitchen design from 10-11 years ago was about $2800, vs today. I forget the actual figure but it was something like 2-3.5 TIMES more! So Ikea went to cheaper material, higher price, yet aiming to offer more desirable styles.

For less experienced DIYers, it's probably best to avoid using an impact driver (as Jeff does here) and use a standard cordless drill with a clutch. Set the clutch very low to avoid over torquing the screw in the fiber board.

Thanks for this Jeff! Love watching your DYIs!! Real Canadian eh? :) I had to laugh when you mentioned to take the time and go to Ikea and put their designers to work. I did that...and when we got to finally assembling the units and putting the doors and drawers on I realized that their system didn't tell me I was missing 1 microwave cabinet door and 1 over the fridge cabinet door....oh and it delivered a 3rd 24" drawer for my 2 drawer pot cabinet. Yet when I purchased everything at the kiosk and payed, I figured great!! Got that all taken care of....The system and / or associate didn't bother to tell me I was missing said doors because they were not in stock? Anyhow, I really don't regret going with Ikea for this kitchen...I enjoyed the design process and learning about the bells and whistles also. Keep up the good work and thanks again for everything that you put up for us!!

Wow did this bring back memories. We installed our IKEA kitchen nearly 5 years ago. 10 base cabinets, all with the 3 or 4 drawer configuration except for the sink cabinet. 4 uppers, and 48” of wall unit. It’s a huge kitchen. Each and every time I questioned their engineering was due to my own wrong assumptions. I made pretty much the same ones you did Jeff. It’s just a brilliant kitchen for the DIY’er to build. As for the durability,... we put in the soft close drawers and doors through out and all of the hardware has held up perfectly. There has also been no deterioration of the wood where the hardware connects to it. (I think the soft close helps with that.). The white finish we bought has held up without any mars and it is easy to clean. Our visitors are still just blown away by the beauty and function of this kitchen especially when I tell them it is IKEA. The only thing I would do different is the handles. We are always hooking our garments on them which is annoying. The SEKTION cabinets were fairly new when we built so there weren’t many video’s on KZread yet. Your experience will help so many new IKEA DIY’ers.

Tip from someone who did their own install: DO NOT trust the Ikea employees! They can’t possibly understand and recall all of the pieces and compatibility issues. Instead USE AND TRUST the designer tool on their site. It is programmed with all hardware combinations and will protect you from doing something wrong, like getting the wrong top drawer. Don’t try to override the system. You will regret it... trust me. The designer tool is pretty easy to use and will make building your kitchen super fast and easy. And it’s 3D render gives you a very good view of how it will all look. Best of all it builds your order for you and cost.

I purchased a home 15 years ago that need updating. My wife and I remodeled the bathroom and upgraded the kitchen. We where not happy with the results and decided to spend little more money and really sit down and design a kitchen and bathroom. The house was only 850sqft and nothing seemed to fit. Then decided to check out ikea. We have heard many mix reviews. Like with anything there is good and bad products. We found there is a lot of crap at ikea and a lot off good at ikea. They helped us lay out out kitchen and we ordered everything and went to work. We loved the finish project. We then decided to remodel the bathroom and laundry room. We loved so much we did the living room. We loved that so much we did the entire up stairs two bedrooms. Everything was done through ikea. We found they had items that fit perfectly for the size of our house. I would recommend ikea and make sure you buy the better grade and if at all let them help you design your space.

Well, we did - we designed and built our kitchen with Ikea stuff, including our pantry that had to be strictly built to fit in the space we had. It looks awesome. We love Ikea

great advice again! I've put in 2 whole kitchens and also did my dental clinic all in IKEA cabinets ($10k spent at IKEA for the clinic cabinets in 2008). The locally made expensive cabinets turned out to be a pita years later. The IKEA cabinets and drawer glides are more robust and the cabinets still look and feel like new in my dental clinic 14 years on, under much heavier use than any home kitchen (heck we've worn right through the non IKEA countertops!). I'll be putting IKEA cabinets in my big home kitchen reno hopefully next summer. Just be sure to not have particle board shelves anywhere that will be getting wet regularly - but the cabinets are off the floor on the plastic pedestals so they are generally a ok in a kitchen.

Absolutely!! You should see ours. I designed it all including a island. Did it all our selves with tips from contractor friend. Just because cabinets are fixed size, it is still custom. Our kitchen is twice the size. Assembly was a breeze. Just need to be patient and if you run into a snag just call their help line they talk you thru it!!!

Following this channel from France. Probably one of the best DIY renovation channel on KZread :). Too bad some of the products you use are only available in NA (e.g. your drywall series) but we find equivalent here of course. Anyway, you definitely convinced me to do my own IKEA kitchen. I've recently got 3 cost estimates from 2 different kitchen designers here in Paris area: around $11000 for both (small kitchen of roughly 9 m2). My IKEA version will cost me half of it for the same functionality. I just needed to be convinced on how robust it can be. Thanks Jeff for these 2 great videos, I'll choose my IKEA project that I've just finalized in the store with one of their kitchen designer. I agree it's better to go onsite to finalize the project even if their 3D simulator is quite good. Keep up the good work Jeff, your videos are becoming popular in Europe too ;).

Use the lowest or near lowest clutch setting on your drill for setting screws in Ikea cabinets. I set my Ryobi to 2 or 3 though I would test your individual drill on an expendable piece.
