'If there was a face to evil, it was hers.' Juror describes serving in Daybell trial

#eastidahonews #daybell #trial
BOISE -- A man who served on the jury in Lori Vallow Daybell's murder trial says he saw evil for the first time in his life while sitting in the courtroom with Daybell for five weeks.
Saul Hernandez was juror number 8 and was assigned the seat closest to the witness stand from when the trial began on April 10 until a verdict was announced Friday afternoon. He and the 17 other jurors, including six alternates, sat directly across from Daybell.
"If there is a face to evil, it was hers," Hernandez tells EastIdahoNews.com.
Daybell was found guilty of killing Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Tylee Ryan. Hernandez and his fellow jurors also found her guilty of conspiracy of murder in connection to the death of Tammy Daybell, her husband's former wife.
Hernandez sat down with EastIdahoNews.com reporter Nate Eaton for nearly an hour Wednesday morning at his Boise home to talk about his jury service, the evidence, witnesses, prosecution, defense and why he wasn't originally convinced that Daybell killed Tylee Ryan.
Listen to our entire interview in the video player above.
If you served on the Daybell jury and wish to share your story (on or off the record), email neaton@eastidahonews.com.

Plus, we only have 350,000 people in America not over a billion like china and India YET WE HAVE THE HIGHEST AMOUNT OF PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY THAT HAVE GONE THROUGH THIS SYSTEM, IN THE WORLD!!! @Yen - I definitely agree that there are strengths and weaknesses to both bench (judge only) and jury trials. My only concern with purely using judges is that they tend to come from richer socio-economic backgrounds and/or have money, giving them a very different life experience to much of the public. This means that they don't know what life is like for many of those in their courtroom (who are often much poorer), through no fault of their own. No matter their compassion and/or empathy, they can struggle to understand why someone won't trust the police, for example, because they've always personally been treated well by them. Many others don't have that luxury (perceived or real). Or they might not understand why someone chose to steal because they've not lived through crushing debt, bad credit, or ever been in a position where there were no other options left to feed their children. Jury trials have the same problem, because we need the "jury of our peers" to *actually* be our peers for the system to work, but the chances of getting someone who understands your situation is a lot higher when selecting 10-12 ordinary people from the wider population, than it is when you select 3 from a very limited pool. It's difficult, isn't it? Neither system is perfect, by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe we need to change the selection process to ensure that those with relevant life experience are chosen rather than discounted.

@@jennj9026 I’m sorry you are dealing with that. My brother was sent to prison when he was 20 & he got a life sentence. He was dating someone he met in HS so she was 17 & her parents forced her to tell the police that he raped her. So much evidence that they dated throughout highschool but she kept it from her religious parents she wasn’t aloud to date. Anyways my brother is 42 and still in prison… we were extremely poor at the time & his appointed lawyer told him to plead guilty. We were totally fooled & the judge sentenced him to life. He has another 7 years left… I always wonder what his ex is up to now & how she feels about sending her innocent bf to prison. I know when he gets out he is going to be so messed up. It’s heartbreaking when we are put in situations we can’t fight. My brother was naive and listened to his lawyer it ended up people awful for him. The police also tricked my brother. They told him it was rape since she was underage & he kept saying no she was a sophomore when I was a senior & we’ve been dating since but the police kept pushing and pushing & he said if that is what you guys are telling me then maybe I did… that screwed him over. I wish I was older at the time so I could have helped my brother get a lawyer. Life is crazy like this sometimes & it actually made me want to become a lawyer. I should be one by the time he gets out. ❤

I'm kind of stunned at how humane, objective and intelligent the two jurors who've been interviewed are, and how courageous and responsible they were throughout this grueling ordeal. It makes me have new confidence in the justice system. They truly were heroic.I totally agree that the turning point should have been Charle's murder in AZ. The police really dropped the ball there. The allowed two stone cold killers go free, which resulted in the deaths of the children. IMO they must take some responsibility for the horrors that followed. It was so obvious, to anyone watching, that Alex and Lori were lunatics.

Yes, they dismissed Charles Vallow’s claims & extreme anxiety to the point that he was ambushed & mercilessly murdered…in the presence of his children no less. Law Enforcement definitely dropped the ball by not taking him seriously! An innocent man lost his life despite doing the correct thing & going to authorities with his fears. Sad. He, the children & Tammy Daybell just may be alive today had they acted upon his claims.

Intelligent, thoughtful, considerate and with a desire to make the right decision. More than anything to me was his willingness to discuss the case and articulate how and why his decisions were made. His view of the findings were similar to my own and his impressions of Lori Vallow Daybell were almost precisely the same as mine. Thanks for the time he took to share this information with us. The presumption of innocence is an incredibly difficult standard, especially as more evidence is presented; but his very thoughtful responses and measured, open-minded demeanor makes it easy to believe he truly did want to believe her claim of innocence. But she didn't defend herself, because what they did is indefensible. Mr. Hernandez seems like a great man.
