If I started calisthenics today, what would I do differently? With everything I've learned over the last 8 years, what advice would I give myself to speed up my progress and avoid wasting time and risking injury? That's what this video is about. Joining me is Lee Downing-Keat, who I recently had a chat with and he asked me this intriguing question. I hope enjoy the video and glean lots of helpful tips to use on your journey!

    the going until failure part is soo true. i used to do my max pull ups the first set, then it halves then halves again because i used to go until i shake. lately i’ve realised i make better gains playing it safe and keeping gas in the tank because i get to use that gas for my other exercises before my session ends. gj boys

    @iSwearToCod precisely that for that reason not going to failure is beneficial, sometimes doing it on your last set every now and then can be good to push your self but it's not a necessarity no.

    It's weird to me that people get to a point where they consider they've "mastered" an exercise and then _stop doing it._ Like has it suddenly lost its value? What was the point in mastering it to shelve it and never do them again? I plan to keep doing pushups, body rows and basic squats until the day I drop.

    i started calisthenics at 66...both of you make excellent points. at age 69 now, i wouldn't describe myself as a purist, but i'm of your old mindset about not using weighted exercises. my main reason is more to not cause a joint injury to my shoulders or elbows. i've already experienced some of that by doing too much volume. at my age you need to be mindful of not tearing yourself up doing an exercise.

  • @BlueDemon77

    It's funny as everyone says "check your mobility/flexibility", but very few people do, until it is too late. I'm now 49 and dropping training sessions (as in weights / KBs / running) as I want to...need to....practice more mobility drills and movement exercises, because of injuries, poor mobility generally and the aging process- I also have so many problems that I have a whole bunch of physio and rehab exercises I need to do. A lot of the time, I just don't have time to work out as I am too busy working through these issues and doing all these physio exercises. So yeah, kids....get into your mobility early! Anything, mobility drills you pick up from someplace, Animal Flow, GMB, yoga...whatever, find a system you like and do 'em.

    God thing you have a hat since one needs only 20 min of sun about for each side and an hour walk in the sun one would better off need protection, since getting color there is not much benefit if any but makes people need more sun time to get D. Also one would need to eat food with K2 like meat or dairy to prevent calcification of arteries from the calcium bone loss that D does. Were is that castle located which seems cool? Also any thoughts on ISOMETRICS?

    Can you please give advice on how to reduce a muscle size if it has been overly developed? How can muscle size be trimmed?

  • @MinusTheGym

    @MinusTheGym

    8 ай бұрын

    That’s not a question I get often 😆 I would recommend avoiding any *dynamic* exercises that use the muscle group in question. So for example, if someone told me their chest was too big, I’d advise avoiding all variations of push ups, dips and other chest work. Isometric exercises would be fine though. They don’t build muscle as much as dynamic exercises and tend to develop a lean, denser kind of muscle (not bigger). If their thighs were too big, I’d recommend avoiding squatting, lunging and other lower body exercises that target quads and hams. But isometrics like wall sits, glute bridge, etc. would still be fine. In addition, eat a lower protein diet. Focus on *fruits and vegetables* in their raw state. They’re extremely healthy, full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and they give such a small amount of amino acids (protein). A high fruit and vegetable diet is perfect for a lean body with smaller muscle mass. I hope that helps

  • @MinusTheGym

    @MinusTheGym

    Oh, btw, stretch! It won’t necessarily make a muscle group smaller, but since there will be less exercise on that muscle group, it’ll be important to keep it from becoming tight if underused.

    Hi there. Well, my first advice would be to clean up your diet. A healthy diet could potentially get rid of the muscle aches, but also it would definitely help with your recovery from workouts when you start. I have a playlist on my channel about nutrition you might want to check out. Once you’re getting the right fuel in your body, my beginner routine is a good place to start with your bodyweight fitness: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k61ll8acYsbcnZM.html

    I'm 66 year old. I don't feel quite as springy as I did as a younger person, but I'm way better than most others my age. Exercise is part of the reason for that, but I think diet is even more responsible. When I eat anything made with wheat, such as pasta or pizza, I feel sluggish and the next day I am as achy as a typical 66-year-old. So my number one bit of advice to you is to figure out what causes inflammation is your body. For me, wheat, sugar, and alcohol are the worst culprits.

  • @MinusTheGym

    @MinusTheGym

    6 ай бұрын

    It’s never too late. You just need to be realistic. If you’re up there in age and your mobility is lacking and have suffered some muscle atrophy, you won’t be jumping into muscle ups and handstands any time soon. You’ll be starting with stretching and developing the basic exercises (push up, pull up, dip, squat, lunge, leg raise, bridging). That might be your first year or more of training, just building that foundation and learning the basics, whereas a young 18 yo would automatically do those in a matter of weeks/months. But I believe it’s never too late for someone to start - it’s simply a different starting point.
