ICON Screwdriver vs Snap (With Gearwrench Doyle WIHA Craftsman and Tekton)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Taking a look at the new ICON Screwdriver set and comparing it to my Snap On, Gearwrench, WIHA, Doyle, Craftsman, and Tekton Screwdrivers. The Snap On screwdrivers have always been my favorite screwdriver set, but I am always willing to find something better. Can the ICON screwdrivers stand up over the test of time will be the ultimate deciding factor, but I do have an opinion right now.

    They have the "instinct" series or whatever now, and I HATE that grippy polyurethane soft handle garbage. It picks up dirt, it wears off, its hard to clean - it's junk. But they have a hard handle impact now, and by all accounts it's everything the old hard handles are and then some. I still love the old hard handles. That material is indestructible, it cleans easy, feels great in the hand - and the blades ... you cannot strip or bend those blades. You can snap one off using it as a prybar - but they'll stick another blade in it for you. Anyway - I'm torn between the newer hard handles, and the ones I grew to love. The sets are a little different - they used to come with stubbys similar to the new style sets, and they don't anymore. I don't use the big flathead anyway so I'll probably get the new style hard handles. A little cheaper too for some reason.

    I own a number of screwdriver sets. Most are German, but I also have a set of Craftsman Pro, a single SO PH2, some other European assorted singles, and a Tekton 4-piece set. I mention Tekton, as the fastener fit with their PH2 is excellent for almost no money. Pretty impressive. FWIW, I'd like to buy an Icon mini pick set.

    My girlfriend bought these for me as a Christmas present today. I am an industrial maintenance mechanic and own mostly Icon tools. I have been using Milwaukee screwdrivers and hated not having a case. My impression was wow the handles are huge. Take up a lot of palm space. A lot of times, im trying to do three things with one hand, like balance a part, hold a hose off to the side while turning the fasteners, and these seem bulky. On the other hand, they seem solid and work worthy. Definitely will keep my other drivers, but this will be a beautiful addition to my top drawer.

    Hello again Little Brother You know I 've been watching the KZread channel for maybe a year or two at the best. So a lot of comments on how a tool feels is pretty new to me. To hear about. I've always been about getting the job done. I have set of Popular Mechanic Screwdrivers eight piece set that I bought at Walmart. Maybe twenty plus years ago. For ten dollars, I bought them for two things 1) I needed a set to match a minimum tool list. 2) The Phillip screwdrivers tips had the anti-slip teeth. I have never broken one or bent one. I think, I have abused these screwdrivers as we all have. The 3rd reason would be the cost of ten dollars versus what ever Sears or the Tool Trucks would charge. I couldn't have afforded a high price set then or now. Thank you again Little Brother for a Great Video and your thoughts are invaluable !!!!

    On second thought, Sears always had a demonstrator tool setup, where you got the chance to use the tool. Case in point, the Gearwrench Double x pliers comes to mind. I wanted to buy them, But I couldn't afford the price. Sorry, I don't remember how much. I still don't own a set yet. Could I use them, yes. I think you get the point.

    Back when I was turning wrenches for a living, I owned a lot of Snap-On tools. I liked the design of the screwdrivers, but the tips had a bad habit of shattering. I eventually settled on Mac screwdrivers. The handle design wasn't as nice, but the metallurgy was better. Nowadays, I'm more of a Tekton fanboy. Good quality, without the tool truck prices. Icon tools are nice too.

    I have many different brands of screwdrivers; Klein, Felo, older Snap On (solid black or red narrow handle) Mac, Whia, standard US Craftsman, Stanley Workmaster, Wera and others. As you point out, a lot depends on how it feels in your hand and how tough the tip/shaft are. Surprisingly, for me at least, my old Stanley Workmaster most of which are close to 40 years old, have held up the best and I have most of my original set left. I buy more of them if they were still being made today.

    $49 for the Icon?? SK has a U.S.A made soft grip set on Amazon for $55 so what reason would the china crap be basically the same price???

  • @kingcory21

    @kingcory21

    ViperMods_216 the reason could be warranty. HF you can walk into a store and swap, amazon doesn’t warranty the products sold (had an issue with lifetime craftsman. Amazon said go to the manufacturer, the manufacturer said go to the retailer. Last time I buy them). Now I would prefer the SK but I’m a DIYer and won’t be in a position where I need the screwdriver right now, and if I was I have others; but that could be the reason for people.
