Ya, I keep seeing commenters talk about how their grand parents eat mostly meat and live to 100, yet mine both had that type of diet and they died around the same time as McDougal. Fact is the average life expectancy is 77 years, so I'm not sure why people are surprised that a 77 year-old dude died.

Doctor McDougall was like a FLAME... he was full of energy and in the same time ... he used to neglect the sleeping part of his life... due to his passion about research and reading all the medical and research literature and of course because he was taking care of some many pacients during his carrier ... and that for a man who had STROKE at age 18 (imagine his genetic predispozition ... if he had a stroke at age 18) from who he remained partially phisically impaired... till he died... and to suffer so many losses... like loosing his entire possesions like HOME, BOOKS, ARCHIVES, DOCUMENTS, VALUE THINGS...in that fire from 2017 and to suffer also a severe physical accident... some years ago.... I think all that ....had a significant impact on his life energy... even though ... he still died at age 77 in a very good MENTAL/COGNITIVE FUNCTION... which is not the case for many americans these days... who die at younger ages or who spend their last 15-20 years on all kind of medications and on medical procedures and in hospitals! Both my parents smoked, drank alcohol from 1950-1989, every single night, then quit smoking, but always had a drink in the evening till they died at 93. My mother's family were butchers for over three generations, and both my mom and dad ate a lot of meat, a lot of dairy, a lot of homegrown vegetables, not much sweets at all,.. till they passed at age 93. I'm following Dr. McDougall's starch based diet 10 years now and love it. Will I live longer than 93...??? IDK. But my parents who ate everything did and they also lived by themselves to the very last day of their life, in the very first house they bought in 1952. They had no help. They literally could do everything all by themselves. In fact when family would visit them, my mom, at age 91, was still cooking and cleaning for the whole crew! All by herself. Then the last two years she let us finally. But she walked 2 flights of steps in her house and outside steps as well that ran to the house. I don't feel like I'm able to beat that. Haha... Who can tell... But I do feel great on McDougall's plan. Thanks for your video.

I think he did save a lot of lives with his diet because his diet was WAY WAY better than what his patients were eating previously. In my opinion the basis of it is this... If you're overeating by several thousands of calories a day and you simply eliminate fat, it's very difficult to then match your calorie input without getting bored or full. Simply put, they were eating less. Probably a lot less. And this works only if you are overeating, overweight, and unhealthy as his patients were. If you're a fit person of normal weight, you aren't gaining much by eating high carb, low protein, low fat. In fact you might be worse off due to the low protein content of the diet he claimed was optimal (30g/day) if you have an optimal amount of muscle mass (which I don't think he did).

I am mostly a carnivore but I did appreciate McDougall’s passion. He made some sense with what he said and he was a very learned person with a lot of studies. He’s been in this game for a long time and he’s a legendary person in the field. The fact he died at 77 shouldn’t really be a issue because as many people on here have said he suffered a stroke at 18 years old and he wasn’t expected to survive actually. He made it to 77 I’m sure that stroke did damage. So who knows what he died from. He did a peer frail he wasn’t like that 20 years ago. But whatever it is rest in peace he did a lot of research he did a lot of good work for many people. Fact remains no one really knows the answers. I think the keto and carnivore are great diet for fixing problems which I did with me. I question whether it’s good long-term because it doesn’t fit in with our evolution ideals. I believe we ate meat thousands of years ago but it wasn’t easy to catch an animal it was far easier to eat vegetables and rice and corn etc. so that I agree with him on. But we are different animals today.

Yes, this is true. Patients who develop stroke at an early age are at much HIGHER risk for cardiovascular disease.... He also mentioned that he was paralyzed for weeks following the stroke event. He was able to live to 77, so his way of eating probably extended his lifespan. (BTW, I'm not vegan myself.) We all need to keep in mind: Diet is only one factor, just like genetics is one factor, as well as exercise, and other social/environmental factors. Vegan/plant-based won't cure someone's disease, but it can slow it down.... Given that he had a stroke at 18, I think he did well living to 77. I did not expect him to live to 100 with his genetic profile of cardiovascular risk.

I wouldn't choose his lifestyle based on the low protein amount. As a 50+ woman, I would be in a world of hurt at that low percentage. Each body is different so I go off my family history (no one dies under 100 and they're healthy till their last few weeks of life) and how my body responds to my food choices and exercise amounts..

My Italian grandpa lived to be 100 - he ate pasta with spaghetti sauce, canned ravioli, expresso coffee, Italian nougat candy & very little meat; he lived by himself in a tiny apt & walked to the park every day. He would have lived longer, but fell & broke his hip, caught pneumonia in the hospital & that's what killed him. Also, he smoked cigars!

McDougall wasn't just an influencer. He was a disciplined physician who worked tirelessly to discover why he had a stroke when he was 18yo. His early books were groundbreaking and better researched than anything else available at the time. My view as a health professional is that McDougall most likely had a dissected artery when 18yo, and again at his death. Stroke from embolus is highly unlikely at 18yo. McDougall lived after his stroke with left sided weakness. Anyone who saw him move regularly knew that. I respect McDougall, but think his family should wake up and realize his body should have at least two impartial autopsies to determine the actual cause of death, and the general state of his arteries and heart. Not to do this works against his life's work, and for what reason?

In 1965 there were pens, paper, typewriter and camera so there should be a document. He then lied and said his diet caused this stroke even though he was slim and eating the same food as other family members. BB King an overweight diabetic for over 40 years was working non stop touring the world giving concerts throughout his 80's eating tasty food and never had any heart surgery or stroke.

On several videos he said that most people shouldn't eat a lot of beans and he didn't recommend tofu but you could still eat it, as it was plant-based. I was vegan when I started following his videos and this is what struck me as not right. His justification was that it worked for all his patients. He still remembered off the top of his head the newsletters from the last 20yrs which topic was written on and could tell u accurately which medical journals he got his information from etc. does this sound like a typical 70-77yr old? Most are diabetic, hypertensive and loosing their marbles year by year. Their calendar is littered with doctors visits and their using medications on top of their medications. He had NONE OF THIS!!!!! This is what a starch based diet offers. It doesn’t offer immortality. Nothing does. The lifespan is largely genetic and luck. The healthspan is dietary and partially lifestyle. So go eat all the meat eggs dairy fish junk food u want. I tell ya now the vast majority of you will not be in good health all your life right up until your old age death ESPECIALLY after suffering a stroke in your teen years. Wake up everyone. Understand the message he has been sharing for the last half century.

Although people can't completely undo previous damage done to their bodies by eating the standard American diet, they can drastically improve their health on a WFPB diet. If Dr. McDougall never switched to whole plant foods, he probably would have died before the age of 50. 77 is a good old age for someone who had a heart attack in his early thirties.

John McDougall's philosophy will live on forever, hopefully the 80% of fat, sick, addicted to super processed food Americans who keep eating the same SAD diet will learn from him and thrive. RIP sweet Dr. John, you will forever be loved, remembered and respected for your brilliance, common sense and your diet which is now scientifically proven to heal and prevent disease. The average age expectancy for a male in Canada is around 82... I suppose that Americans could be different but when you consider the fact that he was supposedly a lot healthier than most people just because of the mere fact that he cared about health, it is kind of shocking to hear that he passed away that young. I think the healthiest diet is to eat balanced macros. Restricting one or another is good for short term objectives but I don't think it's best as a long term strategy. This of course requires you to be metabolically healthy to begin with. Dr. MacDougall didn't have low muscle mass because of his diet, he had low muscle mass because he didn't lift weights. But on top of that, he claimed that humans did not need to eat more than 30g of protein a day and believed that a very low fat diet (less than 10g) was ideal. He believed that fat was the cause of insulin resistance. He projected the "ideal" diet on ALL humans based on his success treating unhealthy overweight patients. I'm a lean female, I lift heavy weights, run, and cycle. I did not do well on 30g of protein a day. And when I first started eating more than 10g of fat a day, I didn't feel well. So no, I absolutely do not think his diet is good for EVERYBODY and certainly not for the long term.

He's not the person people think he is...and sorry; but nothing but meat? That's nuts. We need everything but those who just eat one thing and say that's the diet we should all be on, don't know a lot about nutrition.

We are omnivores, which means we can eat everything and I suppose a bit of everything ,in moderation. Good genes will help as well I guess. Yes, a big hype about all the expensive fruits and veggies you will have to eat if you want to die healthy! My dad and his brother ate basically a bit of meat, more cheese , eggs and milk, a lot of potooes, boiled vegetables and some apples. They were over six feet.never sick. My father became 84, just fell down and died and my uncle lived till 93. Not bad. So don't worry too much about your diet. Just keep interests about the world around you and enjoy the days you have left...

Atkins died from falling on the ice and hitting his head. It is all about the quality of life my mom and I are carnivore and the arthritis sleepless nights sleep apnea low energy from poor hormones are all gone. I have seen many who have had their chronic illness and pain reversed by eat meat and a lot of fat. I have not seen this with other diets and in fact I went vegetarian for a year because of gout and I was in the worst health of my life that year. Turns out gout is caused by carbs and I should have never listened to my doctor.

That's very true. We don't know what inside of our body, what does it need, what's missing. We read our body by the symptoms, the signs it trying to tell us. My belief is that just eat varieties of healthy natural foods and keeping an active lifestyle. Prepare your own meals so you know what's in there and the ingredients you want and that you can control your eating. Everyone dies, we all get there anyway, sooner or later. The most important is to live healthy away from illnesses and die peacefully without suffering in pain. It's not about living long, it's about being happy and health is happiness.

He was definitely a successful physician who healed most of his patients. His diet is not a terrible one, it's just not meant for everyone in the long term. It was very good for those who are overweight, sedentary, and unhealthy because it was probably much better than what they were eating on their own. But it was a low-protein, low-fat diet and that's not the best for a "normal" fit person who is active. Not many athletes, both recreational and professional, subscribe to the low fat low protein diet...

@@evec2022I don’t know what diet you promote, but you were very respectful. So many people are speculating about how and why he died when it could literally be anything. It is easy to distinguish those that have critical thinking skills and those who do not. You definitely fit into the first category. I will say Dr McDougall’s diet is 10-15% protein 65-75 carbs 10-15 fat. As you reach your optimal weight you can increase protein and fat to 20% and go 60% carbs. Of the carbs & Protein he would like 80-90% come from starches. If you are trying to lose weight faster he recommends a 50/50 plate 50% non starchy veg and 50% starch. It keeps you full and is very sustainable.

@@robz.3225 I don't think there's one diet that is universally better than another. I think each person has an ideal one for their body in a given moment in time but the body changes and we have to 1) know how to find that ideal diet and 2) know when it no longer works and adjust. Food is such an individual thing and what one person finds satisfying may not be the same as another. Obviously the keto people find fat satisfying but plenty of people find carbs more satisfying!

False argument. False equivalence. No sane low-carb animal-based diet promoter is promoting steroided look. LEAN muscle however is good. But even if you put aside lean muscle issue, animal based diet promotes brain health, cartilage health, bone health, nerve health that simply is the opposite in high-carb diet. So what if some animal based diet follower died around 60? Health span, not life span matters. It is better to live life in joy and die some years or decades younger than live much longer with neurological, orthopedic ruins, absence of decent lean muscle for most of life, with serious psychiatric mental health issues etc.

Dr McDougall's Whole Foods starch/plant based way of eating saved my husband from getting a 3rd stent. Both of us began this way of eating in 2010. My husband lost 32 pounds and got off all Rx drugs for blood pressure & high cholesterol and pre-diabetes. In 3 months time his arteries cleared & his heart function became great- good strong blood flow to the heart as confirmed by his cardiologist's heart function tests. Mc Douglas is NOT to be compared to Atkins! Please! Mc Dougall's message was simple: eat real whole food, as much as would satisfy, whenever you were hungry, cut out or limit the fatty foods, and eliminate the meat and dairy and oil. Essentially, do what your mama always told you: eat your fruits and veggies! There was one twist though: focus the majority of your food are satiating starches such as potatoes, grains, and beans and lentils. My hubby loved eating this way and was never hungry. The world death rate remains stable at 100% ! We are ALL going to die! McDougall died in his sleep at home - I assume. He was not in a nursing home. We should all be so lucky ! I have seen family members are friend die horrible deaths! Read "The Starch Solution". McDougall told people for free on his website how to eat. I bought all his books but I didn't need to- he put the information out there for free.
