My diet mainly consists of potatoes. At one time I missed having butter on my baked potato. Now I can eat a baked potato with nothing on it, not even salt and pepper and I like the taste of it. I am eighty years old and live on a small income from Social Security ($429.00 a month). A potato diet certainly helps my budget. I use to think I had to have a variety of foods, I have discovered my life is so much simpler when I mainly eat potatoes.

Hi Kim, I turn 81 next week(Born December 22, 1942). I have also had problems with my weight most of my life. Getting older has certainly changed my menu. More recently I have felt a need for protein. I still eat potatoes, but I have added cheese to my diet. The cheese and potatoes seem to satisfy me and also keeps me trim. I know it sounds crazy, potatoes and cheese, but it is working for me. Good luck to you and hope my comment helps you. @@kimgirard8575

Dr. Mcdougall is a very good person, I am forever thankful for your videos, a year ago I was over weight, and suffering from type 2 diabetes, high colesterol and high blood pressure, used to 8 pills a day, now thanks to the plant base diet my sugar and colesterol and back to normal, and I am off the meds. I have a disability and use a wheelchair, losing weight was a big problem for me, with this diet, I am losing 2 pounds / week, the beauty is that I do not feel hungry. I feel more focused, with a lot of energy, I work full time, and a mother of three, I am able to manage all that without all the stress I had before. Right now I am working to get rid of the Rheumatoid Arthrits, I managed to cut down on the severity of the flareups, and my goal is to be med free in a year, I owe the quality of life I enjoy now to Dr. McDougall and to all the kind people who are educating the world on the importance of the plant base diet. Thank you Dr. McDougall, I pray that you are blessed with health, wealth and rich spirit always ❤

Rheumatoid arthritis is gluten-triggered sometimes. Low vitamin D3 levels impact the severity of gluten damage (it triggers the release of zonulin, which widens tight junctions in the intestine and blood-brain barrier, literally poking holes in the gut / brain axis,) and cause systemic inflammation in the body. L-Glutamine can patch the gut / brain axis up as well. Good luck.

so I am an MD and have dieted my entire life with little success, but I was also an elite athlete for most of my life which kept me fit and lean. Now at 60, my body can no longer take the high intensity/impact exercise and I can only walk. (3-7 miles daily) I have practiced keto the majority of my life since 17 when I tried the Scarsdale diet. I am now 60 and I now have type 2 DM but am still muscular and fit and not overweight. Out of desperation, I tried the Pritkin diet (very similar to this diet) and I felt stuffed (because I normally hardly eat so cannot eat much volume), yet I was RAVENOUSLY hungry ALL THE TIME on the Pritkin diet where nothing I ate from a carb perspective satiated this hunger. On keto, I get to the point where I barely eat and have zero hunger. But neither diet (keto, carnivore or whole food no fat/high carb/low protein) ever cured my DM and I do not lose weight on ANY diet now. I am already low calorie. I may try the rice diet now since that is so limited, it eliminates most allergens from all foods except for the rice. Maybe that will work at this point I am desperate to cure this DM2. But as for whole food high carb/veggie diets, I have NEVER been so hungry in my entire life irrespective of the portions. I could not even eat any more fruit or veggies I was so "physically" full, but biochemically, I could not have been more hungry. In fact, I had a life hunger free on keto so this was so different for me and unsustainable after 2 months (with no results). Also the Pritkin diet did NOT cure my DM, and in fact my BS spiked after every high carb meal and I was on Pritkin strictly for 2 months and could NOT get off my metformin so I am not sure what he is talking about where diabetics' blood sugars go down on this diet because mine just kept going up. (Pritkin claims the same thing) . I was also exhausted ALL the time on high carb whole food diet, but on keto, I have clarity of thought and energy to do my ADLs (activities of daily life). So Kempner's rice diet is my last hope. I really believe most of the problem comes from all the toxins in our foods, hormones, antibiotics in out meat and dairy and pesticides (which are hormonal disruptors) in all our produce. The only time I lose weight is when I go to the EU where I eat EVERYTHING (fat, protein, meat, dairy, carbs including baguettes! I eat EVERYTHING simultaneously because I am on vacation LOL), and the weight just melts off and my BS come down. And this happens EVERY SINGLE TIME I visit the EU. So what's different there? Their foods are mostly naturally organic due to laws prohibiting GMO, pesticides and trans fats like margarine. So I really think the issue is our toxic foods in the US. Wishing everyone luck as poor health and obesity because of our western diet is an epidemic in this country.

The hardest thing for my body, my mind to learn was to eat only when hungry, and eat only till comfortably full. It means that I have to stay aware of what, when, and how I eat. I have a history of eating in a fog, so it's less comfortable to eat intentionally. When I eat only the lower density foods such as starches, and fruits & vegis... mostly vegis... the weight will right itself, and is. Eating only the low calorie dense foods helps me lose the weight while staying satisfied. Thanks Dr. McDougall.

I really don't lose weight easily. I literally have to starve to lose weight. Strictly eating starch based for 6 weeks plus and I'm down like 6-8 pounds. My measurements are the exact same, although I feel slimmer. Now I'm cutting out dinner, just maybe eating a corn or piece of Ezekiel toast. I can't weigh myself anymore bc it's frustrating. Years back I was a rawtill4 style, going hungry a lot and I never reached a perfect weight for my height. I was 5'4", 150 lbs. Once I stopped and ate oatmeal in the mornings and then a dinner, I packed on weight, going up to around 165. Finally, I gave up bc I was gaining weight anyway, so I started eating treats & here we are today. Started about 176 and the scale reads 169 now. I don't cook with oil or eat processed crap. I know how to do this! Although I gravitate to more rice & pasta with veggies, then dry potatoes (heartburn). I can eat so plain. That's no problem. My body just sux. I also have HCM and hyperthyroid, so maybe the stress on my body makes thus harder.

I really like these mini questions and answer series from Dr McDougall.. when I was 238 lb I did the Dr McDougal program for 1 month and I lost weight.. I had no trouble with it then I just went back to losing weight by counting calories and you know it's quite a job so I lost 65 lb in one year and then further 10 lb but when I went back to regular eating gradually those 10 lb went on and that's been the last 8 months so... Making this shorter I decided to listen to Dr mcdougall's information again read his book and a question was answered that I didn't see before about toxicity of the uric acid in flesh products eggs etc that causes the smell in my body!!! That's why we wear a deodorant under our arms because of the smell!!! Another thing I found was that it was very difficult to give up the flesh the first one two three four days it was awful for me my need to eat the flesh or for me it was basically eggs!!!

Is carbo-loading good for long exercise sessions such as biking? I like my carbs and it really seems to give me the fuel to perform. I never believed Atkins when the fad came out. Now Keto seems fallacious too. Historical evidence makes sense. Knowing the history of the fertile crescent which thrived on wheat as its staple, makes sense to emulate. They performed and I perform best when fueled with whole starchy foods: wheat berries, beans, veggies, taters, fruits and such.

Of course, it is surely healthy and helpful to eat mainly plantbased, no doubt. But to be honest, i get sometimes a bit confused by all that storys of starch eating populations. Blue zone and asian people eat perhaps mainly starches and grains, but they eat grains mainly refined and add a lot of animal products, like meat, fish and often dairy. Their nutrition is also not really low fat. Oils and butter is used on a regular base. So actually, this populations are not really a good role model for a plant based lifestyle.

This diet solve the underlying insulin resistance issue. By going low on fat, over time the body is able to use the glucose in the blood for energy naturally just like when you were young. On keto, you may have low blood glucose because you are avoiding carb. But you are still insulin resistant as your body is not able to use the glucose for energy if you were to take carb. Plus in long term, you are likely to have heart disease and other illnesses associated with high fat and animal meat consumption.

10 to 12 pound of white potatoes = equal to 4000+ calories. You surely have a good appetite. It's a miracle you didn't gain weight. Starch is great , regular eating ad libidum (as much as you want) usually people eat around 2000 calories in high carb low fat settings. If you want to lose any weight however, you need to be in a negative energy balance. So you would lose weight pretty fast if you ate like 2 pound of white potatoes a day.(800cal) I kind of agree with mcdougall that the natural hunger drives shuts off when your glycogen stores are full.(400 to 500gr of carb per day) However, I think he should highlight that if you are in it for weight loss, cutting portion sizes(caloric restriction) is certainly usefull. I feel that he does not want to bother his audience with too much technicalities such as calorie counting and keep it simple. But in the age of information, people want to know the why's and how's, simplicity are not sufficient to please the modern audience. Maybe it would had been better to label the starch solution as a healthy weight maintaining diet, and the maximum weight loss as weight loss diet. With of course the major difference being the caloric intake.

Carbs just start off an energy roller coaster that's difficult to correct. The same diet doesn't work for everyone. When humans migrated to the colder climes of N and W Europe they wouldn't have had great access to carbs, especially in the winter, and their diet would probably have been pretty low carb. Those in hotter climes may have had access to seasonal fruit and starchy tubers for most of the year. Different genotypes = different phenotypes. You need to add daily some good amounts of protein, nearly to every meal. Proteins , like: legumes. Also healthy fats, eg overnight soaked nuts, seeds, small amounts of olive oil, avocados, etc are essential in the diet. Also, add vitamin C containing foods like fermented cabbage, aka sauekraut. ❤ You also you need to consume fruits that contains vitamin C, like lemons, limes, oranges and other fruits. Cultured/fermented food is very very good for digestion. Fermented foods (like sauerkraut, tofu, etc) really helps the digestive system/gut-flora, so it helps the absorbtion of the nutrients you consume. And tons of weight lifting, abdominal exercises and cardiovascular exercises too. You will hopefuly start loosing weight. If still not than you need to contact your doctor because you might be having some serious hormonal inbalance or other problems. ❤😊

Our bodies have the ability to live without food for a long time. If you stop eating for 3 days and can overcome your hunger for only 3 days, you will become fat adapted. Call it whatever you want. Water fast - zero calorie. The important result is that you will be in a highly focused and relaxed state and free from the waves of hunger that happens periodically. It's the feeling of freedom that you get after escaping the food slavery. And it's not a suppression of appetite but a way to repair it and get back it's full flexibility

This is water only fasting you're referring to - Dr M does refer patients to this on the odd occasion to the True North fasting center, but it needs medical supervision to be done safely long term. @@JohnDoe-xk1dv I'm not referring to prolonged water fast for therapeutic purposes. I'm talking about water fasting for a few days (usually less than 7 days) which is safe to do for almost everybody without supervision. Our ancestors did it involuntary throughout human history and it's natural and safe. When the hunger becomes an irresistible force that enforces itself a few times a day, that's called glucose dependence (the body can only get energy from glucose which can be depleted fast and leads to a variety of symptoms) and it's not the healthiest state we can keep our bodies in even if we are following the starch based diet. I don't like the fact that the doctor seems to encourage people to surrender to the hunger force rather than fixing and regaining control over it
