@@MaryDavidson911 I'm offended because he's a know-it-all and has no self doubt. He's like a fundamentalist Christian except in the form of a nutrition wonk. Everything is black and white to him. He thinks he's right about everything and that all the evidence is clear cut or there's no ambiguity in the research. That's why I prefer nutrition interpreters like the youtube channel Nutrition Made Simple, also run by a plant-based MD by the way. His analysis is more multifaceted and it makes me feel like I'm being educated, not indoctrinated with dogma.

It’s true that the fat you eat is the fat you wear, but that doesn’t mean a high fat (low carb) diet leads to greater weight gain than an isocaloric (same amount of calories) low fat diet. The actual human outcome data out of tightly controlled trials in metabolic wards show that their is no difference in fat loss. Technically there’s a tiny amount more lost in high carb diets, but it’s not a statistically significant amount. The body seems to only store the amount of fat equal to the amount of surplus calories, which is logical.

Exactly so the question should be how much fat if we are eating at maintanance is optimal. Longetivity experts like Walter long would say 60% carbs 25% fat 15% protein or the abouts is optimal. These super low fat diets are not and you can see it in how he has aged, with lots of glycation from the high glycemic load.

I would be interested to know more about the medical studies done on fats. Specifically: are there any studies that show how fast each fat form digested through the body. I like to think that the "good fats" metabolise faster because historically people consumed them and were healthy. Whereas the highly processed vegetable oils, canola oil etc. perhaps take longer for the body to digest. This is just me hypothetically thinking because I know your diet works but I want to eat more like the peasants ate and I have a sneaking suspicion they added a small amount of fat to their meals. Have there been any studies which show specific fats? I know your diet works. I'm just wondering if frying vegetables in coconut oil or olive oil is the same as canola oil or vegetable oil.

I believe, experiencing intermittent fasting for years now, that the most important thing is fasting, along with sufficient physical activity, and simple, wholefood.....just like nomad, simple people do in the country, ....or in the bluezones.....people work hard, eat 1-2 a day what they have grown or cooked, baked, and they fast naturally daily as their natural rythm is moving, moving, being in nature, eating when they are really hungry, then moving and moving and resting a bit.....they don`t count calories or protein, they eat what is available and the natural daily fasting takes care of their health, removes the access, cleans, detox, regenerates.....so they are physically active at an older age, not fat, have no major health issues, some teeth maybe missing here and there, they don`t look superfancy but they are ok.....also the earth energy helps them, nature`s energy and rythm what they are following....no tv, no nonsense, no mental issues or physical issues as their mind is balanced in the natural environment focusing on to produce what they need in respect toward nature, animals etc....a human is part of nature, so problems arise when you remove human from its natural elements and force it to be in ratrace in a manmade, concrete environment with no fresh air, no natural rythm, but full of stress, ego etc......

However, if someone has heart/artery disease, Dr M (and others, such as Dr Esselstyn) caution against adding any high fat foods, if they might restrict nitric oxide flow to the arteries, which they still seem to mildly, and if you've damaged vessels you're vulnerable. It is way easier to overeat fats than carbohydrates. There is no difference if someone would overeat fat or carbohydrates, both will end up in fat storage. But keep in mind body will firstly use carbohydrates as energy source and not fat. That's why it is hard to lose weight regardless if someone is obese or not. Body simply doesn't want to lose its fat storage, unless it has to under some caloric deficit.

Refined oils are obviously bad. Refined foods in general are to be avoided. But this video frequently conflates plant-based and fish-based omega 3s. It claims that plant omega 3s hurt the immune system, but then cites a study that references people who eat a lot of fish fat as proof? And then later cites studies on processed oils? There’s lots of evidence that eating whole food, unprocessed, plant-based omega 3s is necessary. Most whole plant foods have a lot of omega-6s, and an imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 in the body isn’t desirable. Hemp seed has a decent amount of omega-3, but also a lot of omega-6. So unless you’re eating a lot of the rare few sea vegetables that have ample omega-3s, ground flax and ground or pre-soaked chia seed are necessary to get a desirable omega-6/3 balance in the body, according to a lot of very credible science. And this video jumps back and forth so much between whole and professed fat, and plant-based and fish-based fat, that it confuses that enormously, IMO.

Is there any scientific evidence that slow fats (whole food fats with fiber) such as nuts, seeds and avocados have harmful effects when consumed in modest quantities? How about any beneficial effects? Just because fast fats (processed fats like oil) are shown to have harmful effects, it does not necessarily follow that the same is true for slow fats. Depends what you mean by 'modest'. For athletes, they're unlikely to have harmful effects in some moderation, because they're burning those fats quickly; and for people needing weight gain after illness. For others, I think we have to be cautious, at least for weight gain, and chances of insulin resistance in excess. But given that the majority of people are sadly still eating excess animal fat and/or vegetable oils, we're some way off having numbers enough for research samples to answer on a large scale.

Which unfortunately could be a bit confusing still for the public as a whole, if they don't understand whole food plant based eating. Because of nuts and seeds being less calorie dense and more fiber filled than oils and animal foods, you will see RELATIVE weight loss in those cases. However, what I was referring to is people who are whole food plant based, who don't have those issues. In that case, you will very likely not get absolute weight loss, but some weight gain, in comparison to other foods. However, again, it would be necessary to have large scale research samples of different groups, to fully clarify what happens further.

It's pretty simple. If you have significant cardiovascular issues, it may be worthwhile to abstain from ingesting more than 10% of your calories from fat sources until your disease symptoms have improved. However, for the vast majority of people, I have seen zero evidence to support the notion that whole food fat sources like nuts and seeds cause health issues. Fat is incredibly important for many biological processes. It even improves satiation in many individuals. Dr. Mcdougall seems to believe the only consideration in curbing cravings is the volume of food. This is unfounded. Many people can eat massive volumes of fruit, vegetables, and grains and be hungry just a few hours later. Volume of food matters but so does the content of said food. For people confused, just use your best judgement. Dr. Mcdougall I believe is well-intentioned but too stubborn to change his position. He looks frail and generally unwell for someone in their early 70's. This likely is at least in part because of his lack of consummation of necessary fats and protein as the needs can scale as you age from digestive degradation.
