I also would add electronic self inflating bp cuffs to your list. These over estimate BP and can lead to prescribing more meds than necessary; but all drs offices use them bc of time and the need to move as many patients as possible through the office. Ever notice cardiologists don't use these devices in their offices/practices? That's bc they absolutely need accurate BP for treating cardiac issues. I think they are actually prohibited from using the automatic electronic BP cuffs.

Good instructions on measuring BP. When I've gone in for medical examines - the first thing they do is test for BP in which my BP has been high. After resting or doing deep breathing - my BP goes way down to an acceptable level. Likewise - not drinking coffee before testing BP is good advise. Thank you for sharing !!

Hi I have been a cyclist since I was a kid growing up in the Netherlands. Today I live in western Canada. I still ride at a high level, long distance too. Most my rides are around 70 miles. Today I am 72. My resting pulse is around 40. I know it is low. I do not have issues with being dizzy. My blood pressure is around 110-70. Is this normal?? Thanks.

  • @AdamJStoryDC

I have had the nurse take my blood pressure from my right arm several times. Also, the regular person who takes my BP always takes it over my blouse. She also never gives me time to "rest". She brings me back, weighs me and immediately takes my BP while asking me questions, putting the oxygen meter on my finger (which makes me move my hand) and taking my temperature. Because of this, just seeing this woman aggravates me. My BP is ALWAYS higher at the Dr's office than when I take it at home.

Believe it or not, I went to a doctor with my brother in poor physical fitness, who took his blood pressure STANDING, he had 180/110 and the doctor said "that is about right". What in the book is the right pressure standing ? Three months later he died horribly blinded by a stroke at 55, he had a normal strong heart but a clogged carotid artery, diagnosed but ignored and untreated for 20 years, and that doctor did not listen to the flow of blood in his carotid... Personally, I have the white coat syndrome, I know I will not be taken seriously by my doctors, and that I have to fight their diagnosis and refuse their medications, because they are not looking for causes but only symptoms, so my blood pressure is high, about 150/95, I tell them to let me breathe a minute or two, and it will go down, and they tell me that is a fake way of lowering blood pressure, because it will rise back again after the breathing. Then they say they cannot understand why I haven't an increased heart with my high blood pressure yet. Well maybe if my heart is not affected, it is not under pressure...
