What a pair of PMR446's the best I have had with PMR446 was at a very low height 22 miles aprox. On the beach just west of Eastern Docks Dover to a friend on the beach in Calais. I was not surprised as in the very early days of Mercury one2one, I was getting into the Mercury cell at Dover from Calais which was 1800Mhz at about 1 watts maximum

It would be interesting to do the same test with a pair of UV-5R operating on PMR446 frequencies. Yes, I know they aren't quite legal because the antenna is removable. But on low power and narrow band they are pretty close to regular PMR446.

UV-5R are garbage radios with very heavy spurious emissions. Icom will definitely be much cleaner. I think the Chinese radios ruined the radio market. Buy good stuff and stop polluting the air waves.

Try going digital. I use Kenwood digital 446 radios. I live in mid Wales right out in the sticks. Farming country where there are more sheep than people. I can keep in contact from home to the 3 local villages about 5 miles reliably. I was in the local garage getting a new tyre fitted and wanted to tell the wife i would be a bit late back home. The garage owner said that wont work here mate, there is no phone signal. Thats another benefit. The phone signal is patchy at best so these work far better than a mobile phone in our area. Best of all, no noise when in a poor location. Any received signal comes through as good 5 miles away as it does 5 feet away.

Hi Andy, Can you help me some info about this radio which I can't find anywhere. Is it possible to program a scan list for 3 channels, and later change the frequencies and CTCSS codes of this 3 channels on the radio keypad? And is it possible to auto start scan when I select one of this 3 channel? I can achieve this with an F29SR2 except the keypad frequency change. And is the MONI button works the same as on bigger Icom radios? When I hold it it opens the squelech and temporarry removes the CTCSS from the channel until I press again and it reactivate the CTCSS on the channel. Thanks in advance!

Hey andy, if I wanted to make a device that can detect the presence of an emergency vehicle (using the emergency network) and alert the driver (deaf driver) of their presence so they can be alerted in advance to move out of the way, as they are deaf and may not notice the emergency vehicle in their mirrors. What kind of receiver would I need? I assume the receiver can be a “weak” one because it only needs to receive when they are close by.

Walkie-talkies are not designed to be used at arm's length! Your signal isn't "down in the noise", it' just that your audio is ridiculously low. A foot or two extra in height isn't going to make up for that.

There are always those weird questions, why is there a radio station when there is a mobile phone?. And I ask why there is milk if there is butter or tea, and why there are cars if there are planes, why there are bicycles if there are skateboards, etc. The radio is very convenient at work, it connects quickly and you don't have to pay. The military uses all services because it is fast and reliable. The phone depends on too many things. In fact, the use of portable radios is increasing because they are cheap, after all, and used to cost as much as a used car, and use was only for government services.

UK PMR should be at least 1 watt tx power imho . The quarter watt is a joke given how built up the UK is and how rugged the landscape is .
