I’ve got several Icom radios, one over 35 years old, my only criticism is the complex menus. That said the Australian Icom service centre are brilliant if you need assistance.
Changing to 1W will not cut out all the radio traffic. It will only reduce the output power of your radio.
If you lower the power to 1 watt it makes no difference to receive signals. It reduces your transmit power so you won't be able to get as much range!!
I find UHF comms from my Landcruiser very difficult.. I can hear fine because I wear hearing protection with AUX in capability for the UHF but when the vehicle is moving, especially on a dirt road I am pretty much unintelligible to people trying to understand me in other vehicles.. the cab noises, vibration etc makes my voice impossible to understand. Any advice?

Same here in a series diesel, I've tried the mic on my work peltors (with the phone not radio) but it only help a little 😕 Maybe a cheekbone or throat microphone could work.

Or airplane headsets. Probably not the cheapest option.

Could be the handset. They live a hard life and the wires are thin. Borrow a cheap 2w handheld and try the same road.

Hi Duncan. It is just like driving a WW2 tank, you stop to shot. Though we stop to talk. Cheers Geoff
You are the number one radio man, never was a good radio man when l was a war mongrel, that radio would suit my landie, where abouts do you park at night.
I have several Icom radio's, ID51 ID5100 IC7300 and an old IC706MKIIG also have a Yaesu ft1802 ft897D and an old 2700RH and lastly a Hytera MD785 DMR one hot tip, never buy Aerials ( Antennas ) with a dbi ( Isotropic ) rating it's meaningless, go for a rating that only say's db.
What’s the door on the door
I have converted to a wee 3db aerial for my car and mounted rearwards on the tailgate hinge. Smaller in size, perfectly fine for line of sight transmissions and ideal for the Vic High country where elevation can really hinder communication. My take is a cheap radio installed correctly with an ideally mounted aerial will outperform an expensive radio with bent antenna cable from shoddy install and an aerial mounted low.
Hi, As always very interesting. I have sent you a message using your website contact message box. regards Rainer
