iCLOUD BACKUPS - WHAT you NEED TO KNOW when it comes to backing up PHOTOS, iPHONES and your devices!

Most people think that iCloud Backup backs up everything on all of your devices, but that's not 100% true. In this video I discuss the concept of iCloud Backup and how it affects your iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows devices. We will walk through some limitations of iCloud Backups and how to manage the space it takes up in your iCloud Storage. We will look at what iCloud actually backs up as opposed to what we think it backs up, especially when it comes to backing up your photos on iCloud!

    Very well explained, thank you. I personally find it very tiering, to have to think about all this stuff. With iCloud, apple totally lost its "easy to use" argument. I find it very badly laid out in regards of user experience. It feels like its spread all over the place and the user has no clue what is synced, stored, backed up or deleted right out from using the device itself. For me that was always a reason to use Apple, but now I feel like using windows/linux/android again - googling and watching youtube just to understand how the OS works and "thinks" in the background and figure out the right settings 🤢

    I can feel your frustrations @Michael Knight, but I still think Apple is more user friendly than the rest. I think technology is moving so fast, it can be hard to keep up. Especially with all the cloud services and options. I'm not a huge windows/linux/android user obviously, but let me know if you find any of it more intuitive! Thanks so much for watching! Hey Joel, thanks for the great videos. Stating that iCloud is only for iPhones and iPads and not for Macs is simply not true. This statement probably confused a lot of people watching this video. I use iCloud to sync my macs everyday - specially the desktop and documents folders. Everything I do on my Mac mini and MacBook Air (email, iMessages, Numbers, everything!) is synced across all my devices via iCloud.

    Hey @CAM Tech! Thanks for the continued support! I surely doesn't disagree that iCloud can't be used with a Mac and it doesn't sync files, because it does. In this video specifically i tried to focus on the feature of "iCloud Backup" option in the settings and not the syncing aspect of iCloud. Yes iCloud syncs certain content within all Apple Devices, but the specific feature of "iCloud Backup" option is not a feature that is able to be used on a Mac. It's only for iPhone and iPad. My biggest point to be made is that iCloud does not backup your Mac. I hope that helps clarify! Thanks for watching and thoughtful contribution! All views are always welcome!

But, if I delete the photos from my device and it also deletes in the iCloud then what's the point of having an iCloud?? That's a little frustrating.

    Great video! Just subbed. As a clarifying question, if "Backups" are taking up most of the iCloud storage, that is when I look at the usage bar half of it "backups" with docs and photos not taking up nearly as much; what's a good solution to free up that space. Thanks so much!

  • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the sub @A. E.! So really you need to figure out what's actually being backed up. There's no real good way to actually look within a backup and see what's in it, you just have options to choose what you're backing up. Here's what I would do. Delete the backup for your iPhone or iPad, which ever one it is and then verify what Apps and content you actually want backed up. Keep in mind that you can delete a backup anytime assuming that you have not lost any information and everything is still on your device. Backup is just a safety net. The annoying part about the backups is let's say that you have a iCloud backup from 3 months ago...the only way to see what's within that backup is to take a device, delete everything on it and the restore it from that iCloud backup that was 3 months old. Most people do not do that as then you would lose everything currently, unless you have another backup. This is why I like to keep a spare older iPhone or iPad around to restore to older backups if I absolutely need to see what's actually in it and recover something. I hope that helps and makes sense! Hi @Michelle M. Great question! is the music or audiobook copied and synced to your device using iTunes or the Finder? Regardless, for that type of content it should be backed up. My only hesitation would be if you're using a subscription to a service like Apple Music or Spotify or something else where to content is always there for you as it's tied to your subscription with that service. And from what you say, one still needs a "wired" option (ief sync to an MacBook) to actually save iPhone content--practically everyone I know would be mortified to have their iPhone pictures / videos lost!

    I'm barely learning about iCloud. It's so confusing. Especially because it's same name, same location but function differently. Help me understand. So, Basically I can either have Messages in iCloud or messages in iCloud Backup but NOT in both? Also If my messages ARE NOT included in an iCloud backup once I restore my device from iCloud back up, can I get the messages from iCloud back in my phone somehow? Then the only purpose to use/have my messages in iCloud is to be able to see them in all my devices and that's it? But if something happens to my phone those messages (which by default are NOT in iCloud backup) are not going to download to my phone? Now... if we talk about voice memos, notes, calendars or contacts does the process work the same way? If I have them in iCloud I CANNOT back it up in iCloud Backup? Can I restore them/download them to my phone somehow if I first do a restore from iCloud back up?

    I appreciate your kind words @Scott McCarthy! So to answer you question, yes you could copy those 200 photos to a jump drive. If you're using iCloud Photos, remember that it syncs that information to all devices. So if you have a Mac computer, iPad, or Windows PC that you're syncing iCloud Photos with and you copy those 200 dog photos out of iCloud and delete it from iCloud, it will delete on all other devices. Also if you are using iCloud Photos and have a computer with it syncing, the photos would already be on your computer and you could copy them to a flash drive from there too. I hope that helps! Can we backup the "WhatsApp data ONLY" through Itunes as well? Or through ICloud and then export it to Samsung ?

  • @Learnwithjoel

    Great question @Sourabh Suri! Yes you can! WhatsApp does allow you to toggle on iCloud as an option to backup all of your content from that app. On the iPhone, you'll need to go to: Settings > Chats > Chat Backup This will backup your chat history and media to iCloud and you can choose the appropriate settings in there to include videos, have auto backups and encrypt it. You certainly could backup your device to your computer, but then you would be restoring your whole device instead of just WhatsApp. There is an option it looks like to "Move Chats to Android", but I'm not familiar with that at all. This is about all I know for WhatsApp. You may need to reach out to their support for further guidance! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    Жыл бұрын

    A couple questions @Johannes Pettersen. When you say your backup is 50GB, are you referring to your whole iCloud that you're subscribed to is 50GB, or when you go and look at your storage to manage, the backup says that it's using 50GB of let's say 200GB? If that's the case, backups can include backups from older devices and all of your devices that use the same Apple ID. Hey. so let's say I get a virus on my iPhone, that virus will be synced on my iCloud account, so the only thing I would have that wouldn't be encrypted would be the recent backup... so this leads me to my question- how can I actually "back up" my iPhone photos and not just sync? Is there another company you suggest for iPhone photos backup? Like 'data deposit box' maybe??

  • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey @S. In all of my time, i've never seen a "virus" on any iPhone or iPad. What I have seen is one of two things: 1. User clicks on a link and that link then auto adds a subscribed calendar of bad content on their device. This can easily be removed by going into the Settings > Calendar > Accounts and finding a possible bad calendar and deleting it. 2. A profile gets installed on your iPhone or iPad. Now a profile is usually a set of restrictions or software that is behind the scenes that is either tracking or gathering information about your device. It for sure is not good to have it on there if you did not personally put it on intentionally. These are usually located in: Settings > General > Profiles or VPN & Device Management and this is where it can be removed. Depending on what iOS you're running that last piece will either show "Profiles" or "VPN & Device Management". Now as far as iCloud Photo backup, it's always good to have a physical backup to a computer, but if you don't have a computer, then you need to have some other sort of external drive or cloud solution to back up your photos. I will be making some upcoming videos regarding backing up your iCloud photos, so stay tuned! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! Hi @MEL E! Yes your iMac would have to be connected to the internet to upload and work with any cloud solution like iCloud. However, what exactly are you trying to backup to iCloud for 5 days? I'm guessing that you probably are connected to the internet, unless you watched and commented on this video from a different device. Are you syncing your Desktop and Documents folders? If you are and you have a large amount of files there, it could take time. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! JOEL- i have leaned a lot about apple -icloud. Got rid of my laptops and utilize only ipad-have two. Love the one that has 1tb of memory. One question for you i have approx. 35000 photos of scuba diving days-living in the Poconos have a lot of animal photos and videos and now discovered that some of my photos in a folder titled ALBUMS on my ipad and cannot bring up this folder on either ipad-but when tap on a photo it asks what to do with it and i click on ADD TO ALBUM which brings up the missing folder. I may not asking this question correctly.-what i am trying to do is round up all my photos into one place. Right now i am using windows onecare as my main storage folder as it allows me separate my photos into sub-folders and renaming every photo the way i want. Please advise best method to locate the missing contains approx. 8000 photos.

    Hi @Irwin Spector! I have a few clarifying questions to help you further... You only have an iPad right now? Nothing else? Are you using iCloud Photos and purchasing additional storage? It sounds like you may have synced the iPad with your laptop that you got rid of? Did you copy and sync those pictures from that folder called Albums from your laptop through iTunes by chance? If your main goal is to only have an iPad...I highly suggest that you're using a cloud service of some sort. Especially if your photos are important to you, (which I'd love to see some scuba diving photos!) Apple iCloud, Microsoft OneDrive, and Google Drive all have options for cloud storage to backup up certain content. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Hi Joel I was getting really frustrated with back ups constantly taking up my storage, so I spoke to an apple technician who said just switch it off and rely on cloud sync. On my iPhone settings I toggle the apps which I want synced to iCloud, like messages photos etc My question is, if I was to factory reset Or lose my phone, my data would still be available on my iCloud from which I can retrieve everything right? If that’s the case, then of what use is the backup?

  • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question @Thomas Buxton! If you have syncing turned on for Photos, iMessage, Safari, Keychain and any other items that are available and important to you, then in theory, yes you wouldn't really need an iCloud Backup. In your scenario above, if you were to lose or reset your iPhone, you would just log into a new iPhone with your Apple ID/iCloud Account and it will download a fresh copy of all of that content that you were syncing. Now some things that could be nice within a backup are settings like: The Favorites in your Phone App The layout/folder organization of all of your apps Custom Ringtones and other device settings I'll be honest, for me, I don't ever restore a new device from an iCloud Backup. I sync all of my content and whenever I get a new device, it is a way to force me to start fresh and download only apps of what I actually need and use. It is a pain that all of the ringtones and other settings have to be redone, but that's the price I'm willing to deal with. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! My photos are almost 50gb so when i turned it on, now my backup is the same but photos are shown independently as 50gb. Once I get my new phone, Will i be seamlessly able to get all 120gb of data with just signing in to my iCloud account? Or do i need to do something different to get my photos.

  • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    Great question @Zaki Rathore! So the beauty and convenience of cloud services like iCloud is just like you are saying. The moment you get your new iPhone and sign in with your iCloud Account, it will start to sync and download all of your iCloud Photos, iMessages, Contacts, Calendars, Safari Bookmarks, etc. Assuming that is where all of your information is synced, it will just magically show up! Keep in mind iCloud Photos is not part of iCloud Backup, so don't expect the numbers to add up and match. Just get your new iPhone, sign in with your iCloud Account and toggle on all the syncing options that you had previously. Depending on how much content you have, definitely be on WiFi, as it could take a while! • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey @Honeybee! So usually it's disabled because there was a passcode put on the device. You would need to know that passcode once it's not disabled. iCloud and the other devices unfortunately won't be able to help you. If you have an iCloud backup and the device for sure is yours there is hope though...It can be a process though... Whenever a device is disabled, you can do what's called a DFU restore. You'll have to google this, I don't have a video on it yet. When you do this, it bypasses the device being disabled, but restores the device and wipes everything off of it. When you turn it back on though, it's left with an activation lock associated with the Apple ID/iCloud account that was logged in, so as long as you know your iCloud email and password, you're good to go! I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! Fantastic question @dakotaprice-williams1276! Many times with any of the games, it can be linked with Game Center. So make sure that if there's an option for that within the settings of the game, to turn that on. Also keep in mind that not all games upload and save information to iCloud. It really depends on the developer who created the app. Most do, but I have seem some that don't. I will also say that some games do not sync from different devices. For example, I have one game that syncs on my iPhone or iPad, but I can get that same game on the Apple TV and Mac, and for whatever reason, the progress does not sync. I hope that helps! I guess the one thing that confuses me is on where certain data is actually stored. For example on your account, Netflix. Once you log into Netflix on a new phone, all data should be there because Netflix has that data. So why does apple need to back it up

  • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    10 ай бұрын

    Great question @tyler4351! I think it depends on the App. Netflix's app on the iPhone doesn't really have any customization or anything. You have your different profiles and Netflix seems to store your watch history on their servers, so would you lose anything if you didn't include Netflix within an iCloud Backup, probably not. However there are some apps that do backup data to iCloud. For example WhatsApp. This app specifically says within the settings: "Back up your chat history and media to iCloud so if you lose your iPhone or switch to a new one, your chat history is safe. You can restore your chat history and media when you reinstall WhatsApp." I think it all depends on how the apps are created by developers. I guess I would say all apps are not all created equal or have the same purpose to an iCloud backup for some apps could be pretty useless. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Hi @Home Richards! Yes let me clarify... If you have the options for iCloud Photos turned off and iMessages turned off in iCloud settings on your iPhone or iPad, those Photos and messages would then be included in the iCloud Backup. If you have the options for iCloud Photos and iMessages turned on, that means they're syncing among all of your devices and according to Apple, they would not be included in the iCloud backup. I don't see much documentation on this from Apple other than that anything purchased like Music will always have your purchase history backed up, but really, it's just keeping a history of your past purchases in my opinion. I think many companies are relying on users to subscribe to their streaming services and then in that case, content will always be there for you. I do know that if you have music copied from a computer and you sync that to the iPhone or iPad and then backup up to a computer and not iCloud, it will be included...but as far as iCloud is concerned, I think it depends. I currently see KZread Music and Amazon Music as options in the iCloud Backup settings, but no Apple Music. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Great question @Akheem Cox! I haven't actually been in that situation as it auto deducts every month. If I were to guess, they'll probably notify and email you letting you know the payment isn't working and I would also guess you have a short period of time to access your information, so I would certainly pay if you need your data back. The sad reality is many users, including myself store the majority of personal documents in these cloud systems which really makes you tied to paying into their service. This goes for any big tech company that you're using cloud storage for. I'll link below the terms of iCloud from Apple's Website. If you do a search for the word "payment" you can quickly find their couple paragraphs that discuss what happens when you don't pay. Apple Legal Terms that no-one reads: www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/icloud/en/terms.html I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Hey @Amrit Grg! Are you looking to recover deleted text messages? As far the iMessages being backed up in iCloud Backup depends. If you have iMessages turned on within the iCloud Settings on your device, then according to Apple, the messages are not included in iCloud Backup. I will link that article below: What does iCloud back up? support.apple.com/en-us/HT207428 There are some software solutions on the market that may help however. EaseUS is a great recovery software for recovering content that was deleted from an iPhone. Tenorshare is another good one as well as iMyFone. www.easeus.com www.tenorshare.net www.imyfone.com/iphone-data-recovery/ I'd check them out if that's your main goal I hope that helps! @@amritgrg9429 Ah...sorry to hear that. I've been in those shoes before unfortunately. Now this is a different story as looking at Viber now, that's a third party messaging app, so it could be in iCloud Backup.. You may have two options if you're lucky....1. Email the company and see if they can provide a record. 2. Hope that you have an iCloud Backup and if you do, it would require you to wipe your device and restore it to a previous date prior to the messages being deleted. Sometimes it's helpful to have an old iPhone or iPad and use that to wipe and restore from a previous iCloud Backup. The crappy part is that when you need to recover something from an iCloud Backup, it's all or nothing. You can't pick and choose. So you'll need to wipe some device, log in with your iCloud account and choose to restore from an iCloud Backup and hope that there's one to restore from. Best of luck and I hope this helps!

This Information Is Correct Because I Lost A Folder Yesterday That Dated back To May of 2013 (11 years) And iCloud Had It. So I KNOW it Works. Hi @Ben G! Are you saying you want to backup your actual iCloud Backup? My first instinct would be that this would not be possible as your iCloud Backup lives out on Apples servers, and we as consumers would have no way to access that. @@Learnwithjoel I guess I should have been clear, I don't want to back up my iCloud backup, I want to get a backup of my photo library, THEN delete the photos from iCloud to free up the 200 GB storage, since most of the files used are media/photos. I can't just keep buying more and more space, when I have external storage device that can archive my photos. I see that you can download the photos from my iCloud 1000 items at a time which then gets zipped. This is quite tedious but not impossible. I don't need to keep years and years of photos on my iCloud once my 200 gb gets filled I empty it. Then on my Mac, I dump all the photos I get into a library. Which I separate by year. I create a new library file for each year. It seems that apple is making this process quite difficult to deter those who can't be bothered to just keep buying more and more space..... Little does apple know I'm not phased.

    Will your iCloud storage go down if you turn off your backup?

  • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    Жыл бұрын

    Well kind of, @I_killed_cupid. If you just turn off the backup, it will stop storing additional information. To free up usage of iCloud storage you would need to delete the iCloud Backups, which will not do any harm to the current data on your device. It's purely there to restore information if your current device gets lost/stolen/broken. Thanks so much for watching! how do i get permanently deleted imessages back?

  • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi @Angela Larson, Well the only way to possible get a permanently deleted iMessage back would be to restore from a backup, but that also would only work if you have iCloud Backup backing up iMessages. Also keep in mind, whenever you restore an iCloud Backup, it will wipe and delete everything currently on your device and replace it with what's in the backup. This is why it's helpful to keep an older device (if possible) to restore a backup to so you don't disrupt your current device. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If I press backup now it starts to backup but stops randomly due to not enough storage available. I’ve made sure my phone is updated and charged and it still doesn’t work. What do I do?

    Realize that if you purchase iCloud and sync any device, it's not really a copy. It's in the cloud, they own it, and you can merely access it from your devices. If you ever want to cancel iCloud, it remains there for 30 days and poof! Especially if you have an older device, good luck getting Apple to take the time to physically put the data back on your computer. Computer is old, so their 15 minute rule. Seems nobody, even senior advisors, knows how to do it. Every one of them tells you something different to where you're fearful of emptying the trash. Many will be rude, treat you like a pain, sigh, and even hang up when you request a survey. So better think carefully if you really want them to own your data and memories forever. Because of them, I'm almost out of space on my computer. Only had a sliver used on my huge external drive. Not anymore.

    Wow this is shocking, so with icloud backup & sync turned on, Apple does not backup your (arguably) most important information, that being your photo's/video.. So lets say someone gains access to one of your devices and/or is stolen, & they delete all your photo's & video, thats it you're sol? What's the point of the backup if you are coming from manual backup looking to offload? It should be called 'iSync' not 'backup'..

    syncing is not a back up, if I drop my cell into that bucket, poof my 27,000 pics are gone in iCloud , pointless. even if you delete your photos off your cell to free up space, poof they're gone as well from your Apple "cloud ". Apple in their wisdom feel this is actually a "back up" its not.

  • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    2 жыл бұрын

    I totally agree @Kev Miller! Syncing is not a back up. It really comes down to the scenario of "what if" and then "what do I do". If you are not using any cloud service to "back up" your photos, then if you lose a phone, you're 100% relying on recovering the data from the phone itself or a manual backup to a computer. However some users don't have a computer or access to one, so the a cloud option may be their only alternative. I do not like that they market a backup with photos especially, like you said, it's really only syncing them. If you delete one, it deletes it everywhere and then it's gone assuming you don't recover it from the 30 days they give you...so yeah, it's helpful, but a little confusing too.
