Windows 9 is sealed tight in area 51 where everyone will find it.

A few years back they were selling a few of these modded G4 clamshell iBooks on eBay. They were a few hundred dollars, ran 10.5, 500mhz and had the disclaimer that they'd randomly lock up at times. Wonder who ended up with those machines. Almost pulled the trigger but couldn't justify the price.

Piipperi800 in the comment section here owns one. You see, the thing with those was, some rich American kid had a boat load of Clamshells, and sent out a few to a British guy who G4'd them, so they would split profits on those. Rest assured, the upgrade was done correctly, but the rich kid that eventually sold the Clamshells did the cooling on them... He hacksawed a laptop cooler, straight through the heatpipes, and slapped it on. It didn't cool the system adequately, so it would frequently lock up.

The reason why they would freeze up is because they were using the G3 cooling system my cooling system prevents freezing up because they never overheat 👍

So that's why it's not silent! It's has a G4 inside! This one reminds me I need to fix my own blueberry iBook. The keyboard has a row of keys not working and I think it's the plug on the motherboard that has a problem. Nice laptop, very funny looking, used to play a lot of edutainment games on it

there are early builds of 10.6 that can run on a G4, which makes it possible to run on this ibook

Clamshell was by far the coolest computers they ever made. It still looks crazy cool!

A very, VERY neat little system! I personally wouldn't run Leopard on it, I'm much more of a purist, but heck it's a 500mhz G4 shoved in a G3 so WHY NOT GO ALL OUT :D It's super nice it will still native boot OS9 (ya never know with some hacks what could get broken) and yeah, I really like this thing, fan included, lol. You certainly had fun with it, and it shows in the vid my friend! Ah, maybe one day I'll have a Clamshell. Sure, it won't be a G4 but it will be fine for what it is and what I want to use it for. That being said, I feel my G3 PDQ calling my name in the distance, begging me to give the Oregon Trail another go. Maybe I should toss on Filemaker as well so I can FIRE ZE MISSILES... I mean, MAKE ZE FILES! XD

17:03 ...I mean, even if you had some sort of video acceleration, you are still at some 4MBs in vRAM, so the finder will probably still struggle to redraw like it is and all the other apps with their own stuff.

Seen the original video a few weeks ago and yea pretty nice mod, for those wondering they used the G4 from the Ti Books (first gen) as it is pretty straight forward other than the multiplier and maybe needing a resistor for the voltage. The cooler needs improvement but for first effort it worked, one can the same mod to imac G3s without much effort.

the only reason why low RAM slows things down is because apps try to conserve RAM when it's reaching the limit, especially Windows itself, as it starts to use the page file more and more, which is slower than using physical RAM

@@TorutheRedFoxlow vram means the GPU have to constantly flush vram to make space. This means more GPU cycles are "wasted" with low vram.

Anyone remember interlaced gif’s? When the website first loads, it brings in low res versions of the site graphics, then they slowly fade in and sharpen.

I wanted to do this mod when I was younger. This was my first laptop made out of parts. The top was orange and the bottom was the blue. The G4 was a mod I saw on Mac forms but too complicated for me

I've still been using highest spec G4 ibook in 2013 as my daily notebook for school and such, it worker pretty well though I had to use an external youtube app as youtube in browser would be way too slow.

Back when the iBook clamshells were new the rainbow colors were G3s. The gray or silver iBook clamshells were G4s. I had a gray iBook clamshell G4.

There appears to be a damage mark in the middle of the screen

Is there a dead pixel on that laptop's screen?

They probably could've kept stock cooling if they dropped the clock on that 500MHz 7410 to 366~400MHz or so. It would still be quite an upgrade over stock, just slightly less impressive (but quite a bit cleaner). The display and upper case shielding don't matter too much, they're mostly there for RF shielding. The display shielding especially tends to pick up these black marks over time and the only ways to get rid of them are to clean and repaint the shielding or remove it entirely (which is what I do). The upper case shielding is thin and doesn't really contact anything in a way that would affect cooling much so you're not going to notice that it's missing. The lower case shielding, however, is essential for cooling, especially of the GPU and a couple other support chips, and removing it is a really bad idea (of course they kept it in here but I've seen other mods that remove it).

An M1 mobo is an M1 mobo whether it came from a MacBook Air or a Mac mini. the hard part is going to be accommodating the ports so they line up with the case and not tripping one of the security chips

I miss my G3. The CD rom drive died so I got rid of it. I loved playing games on it.

The color scheme is being re-done in the iMac, orange would rule for me! All I need to do is to win the lottery. An iMac M1 for me! Light, but powerful. I used DOS, the Delete with * was a dangerous trip. You had to be very careful.

Good news. The iMac M1 orange is out. However orange requires an 8 core gpu. There’s no orange for the 7 core gpu model

ive wanted to take an old apple ibook and stuff a modern laptop in it for a while now. imagine having an old 17 inch pro and stuffing a modern laptop with a decent gpu in it

The greatest challenge would be getting all of the new laptop bits to fit inside an old iBook. But if I were to build it. I would just use the iBook outside shell as a veneer. Design and 3D print new parts to hold everything inside a clamshell. I can imagine a MacBook Air logic board could inside an iBook

11:34 "I am not used to older computers holding a charge." I bought an iBook G3 14" for €35 (I live in France) with a apparently dead hard drive. It would show a Mac OS X boot screen but it would not go any further than the loading cursor. I replaced the original IDE HDD with a CF card adapted to IDE and installed Mac OS X 10.3 Panther on it from images that I downloaded from the internet. The best part was that the battery still worked with 186 cycles on it. It was the original Apple battery. Oh, and unlike you, Ken, I got an Apple charger. Not the original charger that would have come with an iBook G3 14", but an iBook G4 charger. It works perfectly with this machine.

The 16GB CF card I put in the iBook works so well that it boots up faster than my modern computer running Ubuntu 18.04, but only because my modern PC is using a mechanical HDD.

Yes, and my startup disk (name "iBook SSD") does show up very fast in the boot picker, but the watch stays forever in comparison before turning into a mouse cursor. Probably because the CF card is slower than a true SSD.

There is this crap going on ebay about people claiming to have a 'rare ibook' they just change the shell of the ibook and sell it for 1000+ dollars, and it makes me mad when I try to look at a ibook g3.
