Installing Mac OS X on an Apple TV - Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures

Ғылым және технология

Can you install Mac OS X on an Apple TV (first-gen)? Mac OS X runs on Intel, and the Apple TV uses an Intel Pentium M, so it's gotta be possible, right? Today, Krazy Ken and Brainiac Brent are gonna do it, and you're gonna join the suffering!

@@rodrigochen7927 Find a second gen. I'm pretty sure those on older versions of tvOS (Pre-iOS, Pre-True tvOS) ran on modified Mac OS, so you could possibly get Windows 10 on there. Why? Because to handle Mac OS X better, It most likely would have a Core processor instead of a Pentium or Celeron.

Yo Ken The reason why Tiger doesn’t run well on the Apple TV 1st Gen is because of the lack of working hardware acceleration (when you deleted those Nvidia Kexts) Leopard doesn’t have problems with the Nvidia Kexts I recently got macOS X Leopard running on the Apple TV 1st Gen that is fully bootable, it also has QE/CI Hw acceleration working already if you want a hard drive image of it

I think the sound might be inductor whine. The DC-DC inverter's inductors could be carrying higher peak currents or having larger changes in current flowing through, causing the coil to vibrate more due to magnetic forces. Inductors don't have to be so audible - they can have silastic to prevent/absorb vibrations, or would tightly enough against its ferrite core. Thanks for another great episode!

I had thought that because the video hardware on the Apple TV had a proprietary driver to support the streaming, this support was not available as part of the MacOS system. If there is a way to get the video driver from the Apple TV OS to run under MacOS, would that improve video playback and performance?

Could you also try the opposite and run the TV OS on the iMac by swapping/bless(ing) the kernel with the one from the Tiger OS X, along with the EFI and the nVidia & ethernet kernel extensions that it needs? (Or even all of them) Maybe it will boot that way and if it does it should definitely be much faster than the AppleTV itself. Also on dd you can press Ctrl-T at anytime to see the status/performance and you can also use ddrescue instead of dd if you install it through Mac ports or through the Homebrew project along with a lot of other Linux utilities.

Oh man, back in the day this was THE go-to machine for car-PC integration. Throw 10.4 on it, maybe swap the HDD with a nice CF card for stability and it was perfect. Thanks for the cool way-back here!

I have an idea. iirc, the Apple TV OS is just modded Mac OS X 10.4.7. And that 2007 iMac is probably too new to boot that (didn't it ship with like 10.4.11?). Would it boot on an older Mac tho? (I didn't read the kernel panic, I just thought of this and wanted to share)

You guys should see if you can get the apple tv software running on the iMac and how well. Maybe move all the kernel and kexts and stuff but from MacOS instead? Great vid anyhoo.

If OS X runs Intel and can be installed on the older Apple TV devices, then macOS for Apple Silicon ought to be able to be installed on the newer Apple TV devices, right?

On the BSD version of dd you can press Ctrl-t while it's running to print out a status. On a GNU version you can start it with the flag status=progress

also, you could speed it up a bit by using an SSD (using an IDE to SATA converter) but I'm not entirely sure how the older Mac OS X would react to the newer solid-state storage, my guess it would be that it detects it as a USB although I don't think that would happen because you're using the SATA interface, it will be interesting nonetheless to see what happens

Using a pata to msata adapter, I get about 82MB/s with instant seeking times, but I've never tried OSX with this. This is probably the best way to go, as you wont have any problems closing the case, can remove the fan and make it totally silent (the case will be cooler using a msata with the fan disabled, than with the fan active + a spinning disk) and it's also seems to be the fastest, almost saturating the 100MB/s PATA interface). I also have a pata to sata adapter that i got ages ago and with this I got about 60-66MB/s. I remember that using this, OSX Leopard 10.5.8 "wasnt too bad". Using the msata adapter should be even better. The fast SSD is almost like getting extra ram.
