Ibanez EHB1005SMS Detailed Review - For Potential Buyers

Музыка

Sorry, I went and created another long review video - this time on the Ibanez EHB1005SMS short-medium multiscale bass guitar. The video is intended for those that are seriously thinking about the bass and want to really learn all about it from someone who already owns one before spending hard earned money. If you're just looking for sound examples, yes I have those, but I'm more interested in showing you all the details and quirks of the bass you may not get elsewhere. But over time I expect to have many videos posted on the channel of the EHB1005SMS getting groovy, so be sure to subscribe.
While this video is for the Ibanez EHB1005SMS video, much of the info covered in this video will apply to the other basses in the EHB series. The main differences will be the pickups (Bartolini BH2's vs Nordstrand Big Singles), fanned fret vs standard fret, and neck length and neck wood types.
I'll also post updates here in the description and in the comments as needed. I know I may not be everyone's cup of tea as a bassist and presenter, so have grace if I am not what you're looking for - there's plenty of other video options on KZread and we can all get along just fine.
In the video I refer to a number of things that I wanted to provide links to here for your convenience:
- I bought the bass from Sweetwater: www.sweetwater.com/store/deta...
- The EHB1005SMS web page on Ibanez's site: www.ibanez.com/eu/products/de...
- Video on changing strings: • Ibanez EHB bass string...
- GruvGear Strap: gruvgear.com/collections/home...
- GruvGear Gigblade Slim gig bag: gruvgear.com/collections/guit...
- Talkbass EHB Forum: www.talkbass.com/threads/iban...
- My ideal J-style bass #1: www.lakland.com/product/skyli...
- My ideal J-style bass #2: www.devonbass.com/buy/1905/
- My idea J-style bass #3: www.sandberg-guitars.de/basse...
- Used a picture from their site (I don't believe they carry Ibanez, but lots of other great brands): basscentral.com/
In the video I cover two songs to use as audio examples of the bass. These two songs are as follows:
- "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours" by Stevie Wonder, 1970.
- "I Wish" by Stevie Wonder, 1976.
All recordings of the EHB 1005SMS were made by going direct into an SSL 2+ audio interface (with 4K mode on) to Presonus StudioOne DAW software. I then only used mild EQ (mostly to act as a high-pass filter) on the bass via a Waves SSL G-Channel plugin.
I bought this Ibanez EHB1005SMS with my own money. I was not provided any compensation from Ibanez nor do I have any affiliation with Ibanez at the time this video was made or any time before. However, if Ibanez would like to contact me to test and provide video reviews of other models in the EHB product line, I'm more than happy to discuss further. Other manufacturers welcome too!

Great review! I own this and the 4-string and agree with everything you said. I do play heavier music in addition to funk, jazz, pop, etc. These short scale EHBs are the most tonally versatile basses I've ever owned. Worth mentioning is they've got incredibly stable necks. I've also owned the 1505MS and tried several string gages on all my EHBs and never had to touch a truss rod. Excited to try the preamp mod. Gonna see if it's in the 4 string too. And got some great ideas from you and other commenters about the inlays. THANK YOU!! My method was vinyl tape, a mini hole punch and tweezers. Took me an hour to get half of one neck done. I've been dreading finishing the job.

Watching this in May of 2022 and I’m strongly considering a Ibanez EHB, tho I don’t know about MS or parallel fret. I’m still watching the vid so you might address this but I wonder about chambered body. The light weight is great but does it lack sustain due to reduced mass?

Hi @biasiode65 - I translated your comments - thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it. Regarding the Ibanez Mezzo, I don't own one and only review stuff I actually have and use. However, since you are asking about it I can give some feedback since I have played a few in music stores and played someone else's Mikro in rehearsals and services. The Mezzo is a cool little bass. It is light weight and I would think would be easy on the back and should have little to no neck dive. It also looks really cool - I loved the Tangerine color on one of the earlier model years Ibanez had. I considered the Mezzo before the TMB, but passed only because the neck was too small for my preference (fretboard wasn't wide enough). Otherwise, a great bass for the money. The Mikro, which is basically the same bass but smaller is fantastic. It also has a neck not wide enough for my preference, but otherwise plays and sounds great. Super light and well balanced on a strap. If you like the thin neck on either the Mikro or Mezzo, then either would be a good choice.

Thanks for the answer, you gave me a great answer and good solutions, as I expected from you, after watching your videos. Please continue your activity, your reviews are very useful and the fact that they are long is not a problem at all, on the contrary, reviews should be done in order to allow a good analysis of all the characteristics of an instrument. Many, instead of making reviews, rather make advertising promotions of the product, which do not always give the correct idea of the tool. On the other hand, it is not always possible to try the tools before buying them to decide what is right for us. Certainly not when you make a purchase on WEB sites. Thanks again for your effort and greetings. (Translated with google translate

What a great sounding bass, and it's so good to hear about the comfort factor. I don't understand why people seem so interested in bright sounding pickups. There's a lot of noisy, clankyness out there in bass demo land. The bartolinis in there perfect.

Honestly I thought these bartolinis sounded great until I heard them compared to the nordstrands. There’s an audio phenomenon where something sounding more present and louder makes us think it’s “better” so hearing them back to back makes you think the nordstrands are much better, which could be argued that they are. But these sound pretty great too. I am undecided

Hey buddy, thanks for posting such an informative video on this bass, it really helped me make up my mind about it. Between yours, and a few others, I decided to order myself one of these basses and I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival tomorrow! I did have a question for you though and its actually not about the bass but rather the Hercules stand you're using and, specifically, where did you get those spacers that allow you to use it with the abbreviated "headstock" ? I have several of those gravity actuated Hercules stands so I would love to keep using them with this instrument but no matter how I word it I never get a hit when doing a search for them. I'm likely not calling it the right thing but I've also searched through the Hercules gear sections of several of the online music outlets and none seem to carry such a thing so any info you could send my way would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time, God bless and have a great day!

  • @WorshipBlender

Thank you for the feedback! Glad the video was helpful for you. Regarding your question on the stand spacers, simply type Hercules stand spacers in Google and you will get the product. Here's the first link for them I got: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1479937-REG/hercules_stands_ha301_nina_narrow_instrument_neck_adjustment.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&lsft=BI%3A514 This looks like the offical product name: HERCULES Stands HA301 Narrow Instrument Neck Adjustment They work best on the single guitar stands. At church, we have a two guitar Hercules stand, and they are a little tight - need some trimming with a knife, but I haven't had a chance to do that yet, however, they still work. But on my single guitar stand they are perfect. Enjoy the bass! Let me know how it works out for you.

@@WorshipBlender Thanks much for the info on the stand! I'm primarily interested for my dual guitar model because I typically take both a 4 and a 5 string onstage with me (as well as an electric upright) but now that I've had the bass for a couple of days I'm thinking I won't really need a 4 anymore so I can use my D&A Guitar Gear Starfish+ to hold the Ibanez. It's also a gravity hanger but is designed quite a bit differently than the Hercules and has no problems keeping the bass in place despite its abbreviated headstock. They also have a 5 legged design and are the most stable stands I have found to date but since they don't make a dual model I thought I was going to be going back to the Hercules, hence my interest in the mod for it, but now it looks like I won't be doing so after all. Like you I found my biggest gripes to be the difficult to see side dots (after playing an upright for years I never use the top fretmarks much anyway) and the lack of response from the passive tone control but neither is enough of a deal breaker to make me want to return the instrument. I strung it up with a set of Thomastik-Infield JR-345's & setup the action, tuned it to drop A and haven't been able to put it down since! Anyway thanks again for the info and I'll probably track a set down just so if I do decide to take 2 basses onstage or in a studio in the future I'll have it cause we never know just what the future will bring and being an old Boy Scout I like to be prepared😁 Take care and rock on!

Thank you for your feedback. I chose the shorter scale because of new interest in shorter scale basses. Personally, I'm finding the 32 inch scale of the B string to be perfect and wishing the rest of the strings were same length - non multiscale. But it's a great bass and the shorter scale helps me to play longer.

At home I found bad deadspots on the G string at the 11.-13. fret. Especially bad is that weird overtone on the 13th fret which one can here from 0:50 onwards: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oaqT2rVsdamqpKg.html Do you have that as well? Any suggestions? Could it be the string that causes that overtone?

  • @alexsausl

    @alexsausl

Ok, I am answering my own question/comment: after playing three different 1005SMS it seems to be caused by the construction. All three of them had this deadspot/overtone issue around fret 12 on the G-string. Switching strings helped a bit. I will keep the bass as the ergonomics far outweigh the issue where I usually don´t play anyway. YMMV

  • @WorshipBlender

    @WorshipBlender

Hey Alex. Mine does not have dead spots. However, on the TalkBass.com forums I have heard this complaint come up on more than one occasion from different people. That combined with your 3 examples all having the dead spots is an indication that anyone shopping for this instrument should be aware of this possible issue. But even if it did have this issue on mine I'd do the same as you and keep the bass as the ergonomics outweigh the issue.

Thank you for the feedback. I wish I could answer but honestly I don't really play chords on bass - maybe someday, but not today. However, that being said I don't think the fanned frets would make it too difficult for that. The first three or four frets is where the fanning is most extreme, but further up the neck its pretty mild. Maybe after the 15th fret I could see it getting harder.

It's actually quite good. For 5's, I have or have had MM Stingrays, MTD Saratoga, Fender Jazzes and Lakland 55-01. The Lakland is probably the best B string due to it's 35 inch scale, but I have no issues at all with the B string on the EHB. Even the Ibanez TMB35 I had was a decent B string for a 30 inch scale. So, Ibanez seems to do short scale well with 5 strings, in my opinion.

So do you feel the short scale gives adequate pull and tone on the low B string, as opposed to the version that has a 35” B? If that B string is solid and not floppy, I have to think that the the short scale makes things easier on the left hand.

Which leaves me wondering: is your 1005SMS now a back-up bass? • @WorshipBlender

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I wouldn't call the EHB a backup bass, just not as frequently in the rotation. I love the EHB and think it is the most comfortable bass and probably my favorite as to how it sounds - I love its tone. I'm just coming to the realization that I'm a full scale bass guy. The TMB and EHB were fun ventures into the short scale realm, but I would rather have a parallel fret full size bass. Just last night I was looking at a used EHB full sized parallel fret bass as an option. I have been kicking that around for a while now - sell the EHB1505SMS and go with the larger non-fanned fret version of the EHB. Just for some reason the EHB looks weirder with parallel frets, so I have to warm up more to that idea, and I like the wood on the neck of the SMS version. So, at some point, I can see a different version of the EHB in my setup, it's still a favorite and a bass I highly recommend.

I got a brand new 2021 Ibanez EBH1005SMS-EMM bass a few days ago. It seems to have a manufacturing defect. When the EQ switch is set to ON, attenuating the Treble Boost/Cut control does nothing. It’s as if that circuit is not connected inside the EQ. I’ve been searching through videos on KZread to see if anyone else is commenting about the Treble Boost/Cut control on their EBH1005SMS bass not working, but so far have not found any documentation or demonstration of the issue. I actually bought the the four string version of this bass and the soldering on the pickup knob was good awful. Definitely something to look into.

To clarify. The bass was used but it was near mint. I have a feeling the qc on these basses aren't that great. One of my knobs is crooked and the pots on some of them were sticky so the stacked knobs would turn each other. Had to use some silicone lubricant to fix the stiff pots.
