Hey Everyone! Today we're reviewing the latest and greatest of the Ibanez EHB Lineup, the EHB1005F. The biggest feature that sets this EHB F apart from the others is the killer unlined Richlite fretless fingerboard which makes this little fretless sing! Let's check it out!

Gotta love that Ibanez is never afraid to explore the strange and interesting. Thanks for the review!
Yeah man, I was waiting for your review ever since you posted the photo on reddit. Thanks for your videos!
Thank you so much for this extremely informative review, and you are a great player. It’s so obvious you love playing this bass because you let out a laugh every time you’re done playing :-) I played one today at the Guitar Center in NY and I couldn’t believe how awesome it is. I can’t wait to get one!
Now that’s a proper review - thanks man 😎👍🏼

Same! I got so tired of waiting I ended up buying a portamento that was on sale, and honestly, I love it. Cheaper, neck through -- and you get a piezo pickup (which is what I was really after)
This channel has got me into playing bass again.
I would love to see more content convering this bass! You're one of the few people who've made a video for it. Would be cool to see you change out the pickups or test out different strings. Maybe even just a follow up video of long term impressions at some point in the future. I'm really tempted to pick this bass up
Hi LowEndLobster, I love your videos and have been watching your channel for a while. I had to review the same bass for the Dutch Bass Magazine (De Bassist). I also loved this bass and had much fun playing it. I had tested two Ibanez basses, the SR1305 SB MGL and the BTB625EX but this one is my favourite. My only complaint was also the Neutrik locking jack connection. I also nicknamed the bass Fretless'n Headless (or the other way around). Glad you enjoyed this bass!
Great sounding bass and would look amazing alongside my fretted EHB :) It's interesting that you pointed out the neck pocket "issue". I had to try out a few EHB1005's to find one that was flush (and it also happened to be the best playing/sounding out of the bunch). Please do a video about modding the locking jack as I would like to "unlock" mine.
We used to live in Auburn, WA which is upwind and about half way between Tacoma and Seattle. The paper processing facility in Tacoma emits a smell that we called the "aroma from Tacoma." That aside, that Ibanez sounds excellent, and the B string is surprisingly tight for 34" scale. As usual - your reviews are excellent and lots of fun!

I love Ibanez fretless basses. I have this on preorder. Just waiting for delivery.
Good man, Lobster! You're very good on a fretless!!
Richlite has a lot to recommend it as a fingerboard material, as it is extremely dense and resilient to any stress or impacts...I expect that it will fare pretty well as a fretboard strung with a set of roundwounds...
I listen to a lot of the videos vs watching them. Nice intonation! Listening helps me focus on tone vs look/vibe/visual want.
Fretless slapping sounds so cooooool!!!
How does the Richlite fingerboard stand up to Round Wounds?
I prefer the Ibanez SRF705 it comes with Neckthrough, flatwounds, 2 Bartolinis AND very nice Piezo Pickups adjustable for each string.

the fact that the only available color is burst ruins it
Would be great to compare this bass to the Gary Willis signature. Either way love your content Lobster, keep up the good work!
Richlite got a bad rep when Gibson wasn’t able to use Ebony for a while, so they used Richlite which was more of a dark gray color brand new. Over time though the material absorbs the oils in your fingers and the color gets darker. Also you can’t clean it with fretboard cleaner, just a little bit of water.
I loved your explainer on richlite. Now we need a "Lobster Explains..." series where you explain how other stuff is made. Maybe you could do it in the "shorts" format.
Richlite is used on Martin Mexican acoustic guitars in their "X" series. It looks like formica & feels like countertop.
Cool bass. Great review as usual. I feel like at $1,300 it should come with a hard shell case. But it could be I'm just old and out of touch. 🤘

I think it's just a thing. I'm 51 and noticed that a lot of companies don't provide HS cases. If you go to buy a brand new Modulus VJ (vintage jazz) it starts at $4200 but with throwing in some nice options you can easily get up to $4800 or more and it comes with only a gig bag. Same with Zon Sonus basses. At least my Sonus gig bag had a built in hanger (like coat hanger) so when I flew I could hang it in the coat closet and not have to worry about it getting crushed in the overhead.

@@LowEndLobster Well, for starters, I got it from Sweetwater which is usually a good thing. They do the 55 point or whatever check up on instruments before they ship. Right out of the box, the B string wouldn't play because the back pickup was pushing against it, so I fixed that. The A string wouldn't tune up to pitch because that string wasn't put on right and there wasn't enough travel left on the tuner to get it up to pitch. Top horn strap button was coming out by itself so I used two toothpicks in the hole to fix that. I had it for a month and kept tweaking on the set up and still never got it where I wanted it...I finally got in touch with my sales guy at Sweetwater and made arrangements to send it back. Welcome relief. It just wasn't up to what I thought it should be I guess and it was not exactly cheap.

I have a Ibanez GWB35 that I would not trade for a made in Japan model! This bass is very cool. I have a BeatBuddy that I've used live and done so pretty wild outros trying to get it to stop!
I cheked it last week...very beautiful sound..for me is easy say this because it has same electronics of the other 3 Ibanez basses i already have! A little problem for me is that neck is just a little bit larger..but i have little hands...

East German Trabant car bodies were made from a similar material but they used recycled fabric scraps, I believe. So, theoretically we can expand the fingerboard tone debate to a multitude of materials if Richlite buys in! 😂
I have yet to see a bad Ibanez EHB. Thanks for the review, Lobster!
New viewer due to this guitar. I am going to by this soon. My question is, what would be a good amplifier to go with it? I'm thinking about the Rumble 500, but I figure since you have played on it, what you you use?
Seems like the BH2s were inadvertently made to be pretty great pickups for fretless basses.
That even sounded good on my puny phone speaker. Very tempting.
Hey man! Can you link me to that video of modifying the locking jacks? Thanks!
If Ibanez added piezo saddles I would buy one and sell my Portamento.
@0:20 the EHB fingerboard lines up exactly with the Stingray (or Lakland?) behind giving a fretboard from hell vibe!
I wonder what it sounds like with flats, as that's my preferred string type for fretless
Interesting choice for the fingerboard material. I wonder what's its hardness compared to ebony. Also I hope Ibanez did do some accelerated life testing on it...
@OrbitalDeathRay

That’s one great sounding fretless! All the manufacturers do fretless side markers wrong… should be a dot on every odd-numbered fret, plus the octave.

@edgarmatias

@@joethebar1 actually they get it wrong too... They put lines where the frets would be and dots in between. It's really distracting. It should be dots only, and in the fingering position, like the Tony Franklin signature bass.
I wonder how close this bass sounds to the Ibanez electric 5 string upright?
I want one of these so bad. My house has no more room for another instrument, but once I get rid of some of my basses and guitars I'm gonna cash that money in for this EHB.
I love it a buy what kind of amp would be good for this place drop me a line on the cost for the base and the amp would be appreciated😊
I'm looking forward to that video about disabling the locking mechanism. That thing is very annoying. Also, you neglected to mention the strap button is awkwardly placed on the bottom left edge of the bass, which results in an uncomfortable angle of playing. I do not know why the EHBs are designed like this, but it is a problem.
Bought one. It had a residue on back of the neck - a few drops of superglue probably. Was fun for a few days and I had to return it. Sad part is that Ibanez is my default brand, but so what if there is always something that affects if the playability... I wasn't afraid this time because it had no frets, but they managed to screw it anyway. No fretless for me. ;(
I'll definitely be watching the video for the 'de-locking' of that jack socket... that's probably the only thing of mine that I'm not that fond of
hello thanks for the videos I'm between a lakland 5502 lh3 and a sire M7 O V7 marcus miller honestly, which one would you recommend me sonically? thanks for your reply
I just Bought the bass. By any chance does anyone know if I can use Regular Slinky Cobalt Flatwound 5-String replacement sets on this bass or tapewound strings?
Just got mine from Guitar Center today. Tuned it up and noodled for a little while. Only thing I'm upset with is that all the ads made it look like a blue fretboard and it shows up looking like wood.

Am I the only person who is interested in a multiscale fretless four string?
Are those still the same Indonesian made Bartolinis that are in your other EHB (the one that you swapped pickups in)? They sound so much better in this bass, even better than any other bass with Indonesian Bartolinis I've ever heard actually. They usually sound muddy and undefined, but these sound quite clear and punchy!

It appears so. I haven't popped open the control cavity yet to see the EQ config (there's two modes on that pre), or how the pickups are wired. But I agree, this is the best application of these I've heard!
I tried this and the new 7 string bass from ibanez. I dont have any fretless and immediately feel that this is missing the piezo, just couldnt generate that fat acoustic type sound. But the fingerboard felt quite good esp I have myself a EHB1005 (mod with ag super doubles)

Seriously though love the sound of this bass, been after a 5 string fretless and this would be a great partner for my 1505, they seriosuly need their $1k+ basses in decent gigbags though, you basically need to budget for decent guitar gigbag when you buy an EHB which shouldn't be the case.

I really want to want this bass. I mean, a headless fretless 5 is exactly what I need in my life and such things aren't very common in a price range available to a normal person and the Barts work really well in a fretless. However, I'm not really a fan of the body shape and I don't hear that signature fretless "mwah". But the latter may be down to the technique - you played it pretty much like a fretted bass ;-) I'd need to play one myself before I even consider getting it.
@57precision
Жыл бұрын
Mwah is controlled by setup, playing style, and fingerboard hardness. Richlite is very hard so I would guess this bass would get great mwah if you lowered the action. Probably not the glassy tone you get out of a coated board like a Pedulla Buzz, but that is a unique tone and not what everyone is looking for.

@@57precision because there is no such sound in this exactly model. The sound is typical of modern Ibanez without any signature sound. Yes. There is no fretless bass sound in this bass. I wouldn't take it. besides, in modern times, when 5-string basses are made even with a scale of 37 inches, they still make with it 34. Take the SIRE. that one sounds better, cheaper, and sounds amazing. But here its headless.... Honestle.... only for the headless vibe i would consider it from second hands.

The combination of the EHB headless setup with the fretless is killer though. I'd personally get a Sire fretless over this for a pure fretless as their coated fingerboard is so good. Just use flats and marking of the fingerboard won’t be an issue.
I think the harley benton (150$) has far better sound!
For a while I thought I would 'need' this bass. However, imo, like all Ibanez basses it lacks responsiveness, grunt, growl, pop and punch. Good build quality, but soundwise nothing special. For me the only way to make it do what I want soundwise, is replace the preamp and pickups. And that is beginning to look like work.
Need more unlined fretless five string videos. If there were more unlined fretless five string basses… I learned on an unlined fretless Jazz Bass. I’ve been looking for a long time for unlined fretless five string Stingrays. EBMM just doesn’t seem to make them any more. Fret lines are actually a deal breaker for me. I seem to enjoy playing more and play more in tune without the lines. Why? It seems contrary on its face, but as humans, we’re all visually dominant (when we have sight). On a lined fretless, I and I believe others look at tuning VISUALLY, and we play visually first, due to visual dominance, and audible tuning SECOND. That leads to worse intonation. Without the lines, I am not led by visual queues, and I play more in tune, and more expressively in a way that takes better advantage of the fretless asset. I don’t like satin finishes, but… other than that, I’d LOVE to have this bass. I’ve been waiting for this review. Thanks!
