Really interesting. Had no desire to play headless or fannedfret/multiscale, but this is intriguing and sounds great. Very focused, crisp tone for a bartolini spec’d instrument. Sounds almost like EMGs but a touch thicker tone.

I've been playing one since May of 2022, and it's still my favorite bass. I also love the Spector Dimension NS-5, which I switch off and on for certain things. Nothing beats the ease, weight, and easy maintenance of these things. I wish Ibanez would release a more expensive one with the same Walnut topped aesthetic, with more expensive hardware. I would absolutely buy one.

I got the 2020 mate green one . swapped out the p.u.s for aguilar ones.Sounds fantastic ! Gets almost any sound. Does have its drawbacks though . At times it's difficult to tell where you are on the fretboard. Also the side makers dont glow and it sounds dull when played unplugged. No matter how bright the strings are. I was kinda underwhelmed by the tone of these EHB basses when I played a couple up at the Sweetwater showroom. I WANTED to love 'em, cuz I dig the look/shape/multi-scale/headless things about them, but I didn't think the pickups sounded as good as they could and the preamp felt a little weird. All the hardware seemed a little cheapy too. I've been saying for a while that Ibanez should do a SUPER DELUXE version at $2000 that has better electronics and hardware/build quality.

1: Do the preamp mod to stop those Barts sounding so bad. The preamp has 2 plugs and sockets. Swapping them both to the empty positions will change the flat EQ setting to get a much nicer treble, and the other will give a 6db increase in output when the preamp is on. 2: Still rip out the Barts and install either the Nordstrands from the more expensive models or the Aguilar DCB4 set. @@keithpasculli7465 The Barts used are cheap ones. I had them in my Ibanez. Have a look on the bass forums. Swapping pickups from the cheap Barts to something else is a very common modification on the EHB basses. Usually to the Nordstrands as they can just be ordered directly, or the Aguilar DCBD4. Because of the fan frets the 5 string needs the 6 string pickup size. EMGs don’t fit? I didn’t want to spend £300 on new pickups! But that is what it needed.

I think a lot of it is his playing. He’s playing it very percussively with a lot of treble. I’ve heard other demos of this particular bass where it sounds great. I’ve owned a few Ibanez basses over the years, an ATK, a Prestige SR and a regular old Indonesian Soundgear. The EQ’s were so versatile on all 3 that you can really shape it for almost any situation. I mean would you look a little funny in a Motown cover band playing a fanned fret headless bass? Maybe a little, but sonically nobody would bat an eyelash. I mean a lightweight, headless bass with a chambered body and a carbon fiber reinforced neck? I’d take it in a heartbeat. Sounds like a good bass that would stay out of my way.
