I see a lot of comments that mention Ian's "indifference" to Anthony's letter, and how it's "on-brand" for him. As someone who can kind of relate to Ian, I'd also like to mention that it might be just Ian's way to protect Anthony. He reacts to everything he reads calmly and follows Anthony's reactions, because he doesn't want to feed any more insecurities. I think Ian is actually a very thoughtful person and even calculative, but the very fact that he doesn't voice his concerns or thoughts might cause him to come off as someone who's cold and indifferent. Even with the joke/not-joke apology, he wants to end things with a lighter mood to take attention away from Anthony's vulnerability by making himself a clown. I might be talking out of my ass but that's how I see it.

Not a therapist, but as someone who’s wrote similar letters. I feel like it’s because Anthony wrote in privacy and was allowed and encouraged to be a sincere as he wanted to and not have to preform or summarize or anything like that. Some people are more self aware than others, but I feel like allowing yourself to willingly step into an environment and talk openly while being alone with yourselves allows you to be a bit more honest and open minded a towards yourself and even those you’re mad at. I imagine if young adult Anthony said all this to Ian immediately at the time face to face. It might’ve been a bit harder with the pressure and this need “to preform” and lay everything out correctly. Which could lead to them both becoming immediately more defensive and more willing to just angrily point fingers rather than get to the bottom of why they’re upset. Maybe everything would’ve been fine if the talked it out right then, maybe not considering they weren’t ready for these kinds of conversations, who knows I do wonder if anyone else knows more about this kinda stuff can weigh in on if this is a common or not. Like I wonder how sincere people really are when writing letters like these when they know no one will see them. Is it just a me and Anthony thing? Or is it just common overall in general? This is just my two cents after all

@@theradionicrevival8068i feel writing stuff down makes you reflect on your words more. For example, I would not write down anything I didn’t actually feel or mean, I would stumble in my writing if it was untrue or feel the need to cross it out. Besides, you’re on your own and therefore vulnerability is less threatening than in a face-to-face situation which leads to greater honesty in my opinion. You’re less frightened about losing face and there isn’t even an opportunity to get misunderstood and interrupted or provoked, all things that make face to face convos that much more volatile.

Actually I think he was hoping to really make sure Ian understands that he needs to open up more by doing this. Good move. Ian needs to be reminded, because his default is to keep to himself and not show what he's truly feeling. The ending of Anthoy's letter is so on point '' does anyone know the real you? '' . I don't think anyone does. If anyone has a chance though it might him because Ian reacts more strongly to Anthony than anyone else for some reason, it's pretty easy to see.

Wait… I was reading this comment via Ian’s voice. 😂😂😂
Ian reading Anthony's letter gives off "English Teacher reading your essay to the class and Anthony's just trying to explain the things he wrote" energy
this video really showed how much really has gone unspoken. The fact that Anthony still kinda stood by some of his feelings in the letter and pretty much all of Ian's responses were "no I didn't really feel that way" or "I dont really remember that" says a lot. They're personalities are exactly the kind that when in a friendship together, these kinds of misunderstanding can so easily happen. Anthony seems like a super anxious person who overthinks the intentions and feelings of everyone around him and feels things very strongly. whereas Ian seems like he struggles to/doesn't often connect with his emotions and the emotions of others beyond the surface level--he seems really low maintenance and not very comfortable with discussing his feelings. Take someone who doesn't share his feelings and someone who's constantly making assumptions about people's feelings and you get some pretty chonky misunderstandings.

@@danihydrant9767 I think its mostly that Ian does take stuff at face value. If you remember the first thing Ian asked before consenting to reading this in the past video was - when was this written. Once he got confirmation it was longtime ago and it is no longer how Anthony feels, he looked way more comfortable. I dont think Ian is the type to overthink, if you tell him the letter is no longer how the person feels, he will read it with detachement. Which is why they needed to communicate better, coz they have very different perceptions of the same reality. Anthony is the type to actively read into details, while Ian is the type to actively try to see things from above to get a better perspective. both perceptions are very valid, and creatively probably why they work so well together...but it also means that they will constantly experience the same moments and draw totally different conclusions.
@haruuuuu1115
10 ай бұрын
if you've ever watched ian enough in any other video, you can see that he's not the overly emotional type, but we can see his growth. he actively listens, provides input, doesn't try to add anything that he doesn't think is there. out of the two of them, ian is definitely the one that doesn't have a tendency to overthink or overanalyze anything, and is generally trying to make a positive experience about even something bad. he said the same sort of thing in the first video when they sat down together. he just wasn't equipped w the right tools to open up but it's also not necessarily in his personality either. i think, between anthony clarifying that a lot of it was his own misinformed, misunderstood, overanalyzing self-judgements being projected outwardly, ian could reflect better on what he did wrong (and then owned up to) and not give much attention to the things he felt weren't accurate or just didn't need any extra clarification. ian strikes me as the type of person that might seem closed off but he's actually warm in different ways. his body language speaks louder for him than his words or tone do.

you could tell how much anthony was embarrassed by how red his face kept getting but really this “angry” letter was just a very hurt guy missing his friendship and not knowing how to fix it (also as someone who watched anthony’s old channel he ran with his ex not surprising that his relationship with her damaged the one he had with ian to some extent)

31:47 Just looking at these two, looking at Anthony... This man is on the verge of tears. He put his heart out there, and he's being validated, and two best friends are having a moment that they both needed for years. This is utterly beautiful.
it was actually so interesting to hear anthony has had that expectation of "if i open up, you open up" because my understanding has always been that if someone's opening up it's their moment/their time and you're just supposed to support them and not make it about you. opening up actually just always seems to be something actively socially frowned on even with friends, so that's such a different view on what i've heard about that kind of thing before.

To piggyback on what you said that I totally agree with, I think its also enlightening for so many men who watch this to see that this is being done by two men who obviously have very different ways of processing emotion. While this difference may cause distance or misunderstanding, Ian and Anthony are very diligent and respectful towards each other and the fact they do think about things differently and have different perspectives. I think its wonderful to see two men being vulnerable with each other, and I think its even more wonderful to see these two men being so respectful towards each other's vulnerability as well. It is nice to see that maturity on display here and being a good example for young men who may see this and may have trouble not only with their own vulnerability, but the vulnerability of others as well.

I know a lot of people are commending Anthony for his vulnerability in letting this be shared (and rightly so!) but I want to say it's incredible to see Ian be so vulnerable in receiving and responding to this in real time. He had no idea what the letter would say and you could tell it is still much harder for him to be vulnerable with his emotions than it is for Anthony. A lot of men are taught that they shouldn't open up and be introspective about their own feelings. To watch someone who appears to struggle with that allow himself to hear these things, reflect on them, open up, and respond to them without (at least not 100% of the time) relying on humor as a crutch is so impressive to see and is a telling sign that their partnership is going to work even better this time.

Yeah, I think Ian is noticeably less comfortable than Anthony to immediately delve deeper into what was said beyond "we're in a better place now", but understandably all of it is super fresh information for him so he needs time to evaluate the contents of this letter, let them sink in and form his own thoughts on them. Still, as someone who would probably act the same in the moment and spend the next couple weeks at least with things popping up in my head regarding this letter, mad props to him.

I think private journal-type angry letters are a perfectly fine place to be petty and immature! It's ok to have petty thoughts or reactions that you don't stand by looking back on them. In fact, channeling those thoughts and that energy into a letter you never intend to send is an excellent way to find an outlet for those thoughts and feelings. I think it would only be immature if you actually shared the letter with them (or with others)!
I was actually expecting like such harsh things towards Ian, but it’s actually 70% of Anthony complimenting Ian and that’s actually real friendship right there. Even with having these thoughts towards Ian he still recognized the friendship they have, and you can tell Anthony actually cherishes it. I’m glad Smosh is back man.

I think it’s also important for younger people to realize that it’s okay to not know who you are even through your 20’s. Life’s complicated and there’s no real formula on how to get through it, everyone takes a different route. Figuring yourself out is a process that takes time and I feel nowadays people try to rush it. Moral of the story it’s okay to not know who you are, as long as you’re working on figuring it out.
Anthony AND Ian being this vulnerable is so brave. The fact Anthony wrote this letter never expecting anyone to read it and allowing not only Ian to read it but allow us to hear it is very special. This was hard to listen to but of course, it’s very relatable because we’ve all had a friendship/relationship like this. I’m going to single Ian out and commend him for being emotionally available and present enough to read this aloud and process it in real time while giving thoughtful answers. It would have been easy to get defensive and closed off, but Ian took the harder path and reflected internally to validate Anthony’s feelings that were buried and pushed down for years. I can only hope people don’t give Ian flack for this because let’s face it… We have ALL been an Anthony and we have ALL been an Ian in these types of situation. I grew up with you both and you were my first introduction to KZread. It’s nice to see y’all back together, genuinely 🤍 This is a very real and honest look at the complexities of friendship. This whole conversation really puts into perspective how Anthony thought about their relationship too much and Ian didn't think about it enough. Anthony overanalyzed and overthinked it and Ian just went with the flow and assumed everything would be fine/work itself out

Ian saying Anthony might have an ulterior motive, earlier in the friendship, says to me that there was way more going on behind the scenes than we know. I'm glad they're friends again but we don't know what kind of people they really are. Which is fine because that's serious parasocial stuff there
I can honestly say that Anthony has become one of my favorite people in the internet.
Its amazing how much these two are actually the the perfect compliment to each other. Anthony, who seems extroverted and creative, is actually the introverted, business minded one. Ian, who seems like the nerdier introvert, is actually the more creative one who's able to just have a conversation with anyone. And then the two of them together just have this chemistry where both their strong points are reflected off of each other making it infinitely stronger in both ways. Happy that they had their time apart to work through their own things with each other and that they've been reunited. Can't wait to see future content
Old Ian and Anthony would communicate via lawyers, present Ian and Anthony would go to couples therapy

i honestly think this video would be excellent for those in social work and clinical psych careers and majors to study because of the dynamic and vulnerability of two men who have been friends for sooo long, separated and successfully came back together.
Kudos to Ian on taking this on with a camera in his face. Could not have been easy.❤
This whole saga of Smosh reuniting has been really emotionally intense. This is like a master class in conflict resolution and discussing feelings from a position of strength and maturity. I’m here for it; I hope all the viewers take this to heart and seriously learn something. You guys are doing a valuable public service, whether you intended to or not.

What about Alex and Roi reuniting? They were going through the same thing
The "angry letter" was literally Anthony wanting to mend back his friendship with Ian but not knowing how to at the time. 😭 I'm so glad they were able to reconnect. And it's so nice to see two men so open about their feelings, that's some healthy masculinity right there. ✨

Anthonys facial expressions when ian read certain things was halleriously awkward 😂😅
I personally believe that ian and Anthony needed to split off and do their own thing and now they are stronger because of it
I feel like so much of this is just that Ian’s friendship meant so much more to Anthony than just doing smosh together and having this work relationship and it was always more than that to Ian as well but Ian just didn’t know how to express that in a way that Anthony understood. It’s cool to see them able to do that now.
The fact that Anthony and Ian were able to be this vulnerable, for us to watch, is a testament to their commitment to the future of this brand. This felt raw, like they wanted us to heal with them. I’ve always felt that Smosh wanted a community, through inside jokes, callbacks, and fan interactions/participation and this to me was them saying that’s what they plan to continue now that they’re in charge.

I wonder if maybe it’s a bit too much a commitment to the brand especially on Ian’s end, a bit of a reversion? No shade at all to Ian I think he’s doing amazing and so glad they’re back together!!!! But the unicorn journal was a bit silly when I think Anthony was trying to do some soul bearing. I think Anthony’s right in saying you shouldn’t expect anything but more honest and maybe slightly painful but caring communication could be good between them to stop the old patterns arising, and doing things just for the viewers! The fake video friendship is great, but the real friendship is so much more important and more IMPORTANTLY, not for us! It’s between you guys and don’t feel pressure to get everything right but keep loving and being understanding of yourselves and maybe you can challenge that old stuff! Love X

@@jacobwiggans4470 Kinda funny how the next day, Alex and Roi make a heart-to-heart video like this one talking about their separation and open up to each other.
It's so interesting that Anthony went from "why can't you open up to me?" To his brand being the guy who gets people to open up in in depth personal interviews.

I think Anthony definitely found his niche, as someone who's sensitive and connects easily with other people's emotions, doing what he does is perfect for him
I, too, grew up with a super best friend who welcomed me into their family and we were really close because we memed around and laughed together all the time. But when it came to serious, important conversations, we both failed to to have them and it led to a lot of hurt and misunderstandings. I’m so proud watching you guys take these steps and I can tell you understand each other better now, and I hope you can now have the kind of best friendship you both need and deserve 💕
ian’s like an english teacher analysing an old piece of literature lmao
The fact that the letter wasn't all that bad, wasn't all that crass or demeaning shows how great Anthony is. Like a truly wonderful human being who is still considerate and leaves room for the benefit of the doubt even when he's angry. Long live Smosh
That letter wasn’t all that bad. It was a lot more tame than what I’m sure everyone expected.

For real. When I was packing up my stuff, I found an old journal around the time of my parents separation and a whole bunch of other things happening that I forgot I even wrote. It was not pretty, nor was it nice at all. It had A LOT of anger and resentment, and immaturity. I was reading through it and I cringed.
And now i understand why everyone says its not good to go into business with your friends... but its so heartwarming that Anthony and Ian are growing both together and as individuals... Self-reflection is so important for personal growth and directly impacts relationships
They didn’t owe us fans any of this, but I’m so glad they’re opening up about their relationship. I think it’s something we’ve all been wondering about for a long time, and I can’t tell you how amazing it is to see them back together and repairing a friendship that’s been so important to all of us!!
