Best of luck, Peter. I'm sure you'll smash it. I got my Masters with Distinction in November 2020, and I'm also an IAM Observer. We met at the Thruxton IAM Skills Day which would've been 9 months or so after I got my Distinction. From chatting to you on the day, watching your video from the skills day and the videos in this series, I have no doubt that you'll do very well indeed. I did my Masters test with Shaun Cronin. I'd say my best piece of advice would be to only think forwards. You're giving your everything to your driving for an hour and a half. During that time, something WILL happen that you think is less than ideal. The worst thing you can do is dwell on it. Move on, whatever small mistake it was is behind you, and focus on the drive ahead. Your examiner is looking for your skills across the whole drive, and won't make any snap judgements based on a one-off. Also, fantastic car to do it in! I actually just bought myself a Cayman GTS in August, what fantastic machines the 718s are.

I gained my IAM certificate 20 years ago, I am now 75 and feel that I am still using all the information I learned. I would like to think that I am still driving to the correct standard, or very nearly. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, hopefully it will encourage many others to go for the test and improve standards.

Hi Pete. I was an advanced pursuit instructor at the Met Police Driving School for some twenty years before retiring a couple of years ago. I don’t know what you’ve been taught but mirrors should be checked before you make any speed or positional change, so in commentary I would expect to hear “Mirror on and off the drive, before brakes and for any position change” The phases of the system also dictates a mirror check when you identify a hazard or potential hazard. For overtakes Road Craft discusses follow position, contact position and then overtake position. I would suggest talking about that in commentary, consider physical features on the road where an overtake opportunity may arise and then move from a follow into a contact position. Makes planning for overtakes much easier and you’re less likely to miss an overtake. Consider areas where other road users are likely to be slow, ie out of roundabouts, exiting bents, end of solid white lines and the other sides of hill crest. These could be easy areas to pick off overtakes, after moving into a contact position if safe. I could bang on for hours!!! Happy for you to contact me if you want to pick my brains.

Nice to see IAM getting some air time. Great organisation. I passed my IAM over 10 years ago, time flies. Regarding commentary, when you have a few spare moments fill the gap in silence with a update on road conditions / visibility. Something like ‘visibility good, road dry, traffic light’. If it changes, give a update ‘visibility remains good, road remains dry, traffic is now heavier’

Amazing how we take driving for granted. Often people look for overtaking when it's safer to stay back until your 100% sure of a safe overtake. Also staying back is often not done by many car drivers hence the old back bumper drivers. My adage as I've got older is better to reach a destination safely and with conserved fuel is a bonus rather than risk accident for the sake of a handful of minutes shaved off a journey.

Oddly I've always found the opposite to be the case; most people seem to sit behind a car for miles, always too far back to be able to overtake when it has been possible to safely do so many times. I've always put the reason down to being something to do with the fact that it's far more difficult to overtake these days, i.e. there are less opportunities with all sorts of "hazards" from more traffic on the roads, to speed cameras, bollards and other road calming measures being much more prevalent than they used to be, so many people, especially newer drivers, don't have much experience of overtaking safely - or at all.

@@wl660 It's all opinion, my new car is fitted with adaptive cruise control and use it on motorways thus far. Great how tech keeps you safely in check behind cars. Can't argue with an invotainment option as far as I'm concerned. Seems sensible driving does have a place in the motoring world!

What to comment on continues to interest me a lot. I used to do this sort of commentary for myself as a thought exercise, but what i commented on is not what you comment on. I tended to focus on hazards, junctions and signs. Road markings i never knew the correct names for but i would notice and just abbreviate to "can overtake" or "can't overtake". Same for most things actually - much more abbreviation of information than you do, even if i would be seeing the same things. As road positioning and speed, i drive to maximise visibility and to be able to stop in the distance i can see, but that seems so obvious that i would not actually comment on it. I'm still crap at using my mirrors. And for that 30 limit i wouldn't have checked behind before slowing either.

Good luck with the Masters, it is well worth doing both for maintaining safety on our busy roads and driving enjoyment. You have a good mentor there and I hesitate to add more to everything you are being told. I have a Masters on both bike and car and have always found it important to know (and comment on) whether anything is following me into, or out of, a bend or junction; that would be relevant to you coming on that speed limit sign just after the bend. Peter Rodger, Ex Chief Examiner IAM, wrote an interesting piece about two scenarios when suddenly coming across a 30mph after a bend. In the first scenario you are being closely followed by a 44 ton truck, and in the second there is nothing behind you. Apart from the obvious importance of knowing what's behind you (360 observation), there can be times when safety might trump legality accepting that if an experienced police officer (or Examiner) were there, he might understand your decision, but a speed camera would have you!

Took the IAM test in 1988 and gained a valuable education in the real art of competent road driving. Strongly recommended for all drivers, as the basic driving test is simply a bare minimum qualification.

Good luck with your test, I did my IAM test in 2000 and it is very very worthy from a driving safety point of view, your commentary is spot on Pete.

That 40 into 30 at north chapel is prime speed camera van just to catch everyone out , grrrrr. Keep up the great driving. 👍👍. Or what you could drive would be a scaffolders van they overtake me most mornings in that road even if traffics coming the other way. Lol 😂

Video has completely changed my view of the IAM tests. Didn't realise they were pro get on with it, when safe to do so.

Great update and credit to you for sharing the journey. I passed my bike and car IAM standard test some time ago and I spent several happy years as a bike observer for IAM. For me this illustrates what you need to be doing all the time really but also what I lived about biking because it’s even more technical- more positioning options, greater performance, far more over taking opportunities et etc. It can also be fun driving like this as you really engage with the process and don’t become a passenger.

Sounds like driving a truck like me for the concentration levals which makes you very tired and things you have to look for and distance ahead i have to watch for,good luck for your test pad and loving this content 💥👍🏼👏👏👏

Doing a good job Pete. I pull out of a rural side road onto a fast A road every time I go to work. I always wait for a safe entry on to the A road and always accelerate quickly to the national speed limit. I am astonished by the number of cars that appear inches off my rear bumper after driving at the national limit for 5 to 10 minutes. I'm inclined to ignore them and not speed up to above the limit but there are a lot of intermittently drivers on the road. Like others have said I am of an age where arriving safely and saving fuel is more of a priority.

I completed the basic IAM test several decades ago and the basic principles of increasing awareness for actual and potential danger as well as the comentary on your drive really make you think about driving safely and progressively. I remember my examiner was a police driving instructor and he certainly put me through my paces. Good luck with the upcoming Masters test.

I did a full day defensive/IAM driving course years back (6hrs behind the wheel) which was hard work but very rewarding, I was examined at the start and end of the day, I took a few more IAM lessons after to improve some of my bad habits, but I never intended to take the test, I just wanted to improve my driving. I think the defensive driving course would be useful for anyone, it’s evident that people don’t know speed limits and how to read road markers and corners, the number of people doing 45-50 on a National who flash when you overtake safely and within the limit, enough said! although a full 6 hrs driving in 1 day would be difficult for almost anyone! the commentary bit was hard, but the guidance and report (pre and post test on the day) was interesting.

How intense!! Does show that most peoples complete lack of awareness is probably the cause of most of the incidents on the road!

It's not tiring if you ALWAYS drive like it, or try to. It can become second nature if it's the way you drive routinely. Which is what I tell my student Masters.

Good luck Peter, I'm sure you will get your distinction. I have been an IAM RoadSmart member for 27 years and there have been many changes in that time. Traffic is much greater and sadly the level of driving skill has declined. We need to reverse the decline and by your example, I'm sure others will be persuaded to have a go, if only for the initial 'Advanced Driver Course. The Masters is more difficult but very rewarding. Best of luck for the test Pete. I have been fortunate to have had experience of both advanced rider and driver training initially from a riders course laid on by our local Police here in Bedford, many years ago now but even on the last night of the training it undoubtedly saved my llife from a car driver emerging from the left which I had prepared for by easing off the accelerator and being ready on the brakes and something inside me told me he was going to do it and I could see that he hadnt seen me. Then he pulled out!! Without doubt the increased awareness that is ingrained in the training has helped so many times but the bigger worry for me is the sheer number of drivers out on our roads now who are not even aware of the basics of their vehicles let alone how to drive them. It is about time that further training was given to new drivers post driving test and more information about how to drive is put out there like the old days of infomercials, if that would even work. There are by far not enough police out on our roads even just to pick up on those drivers whose vehicles are not even in road worthy condition, who are weareing headphones, who are using their mobiles and especialy on motorways dont even realise at night that their DRL's are not their headlights!!!

I think you're very near Pete towards "Being Police Driver Trained" at this level. I have some of this experience myself and it is very Intense indeed and i don't believe i could put myself through it again . I wish you well very much I really enjoyed watching .. You did amazing Job Pete 🙏🙏

I found this video incredibly useful. Currently doing my IAM Advanced and although commentary isn't mandatory, understanding the mechanism and observations you are displaying is a spot on aid. Hope all goes well for your Masters 👌

Hi Ped I have to admire your tenacity and determination to undertake this test, whilst dealing with a very busy work schedule. Best of luck to you, sure it will come right on the day. Going back many years when I was 17 yrs old and had just passed my test, I was very fortunate to receive further instruction from a Police instructor spread over a number of weeks. What still remains with me is awareness, learn to read the road, commentary was included, and anticipation. I think these and maybe other factors have remained in the subconscious, as demonstrated on our return journey from Revival when a young “lady” pulled out of a side road without looking or attempting to stop. I had anticipated this and already covered the brake, and ended with an emergency stop. I only wish she could see my dash cam footage to realise how close she came to being killed or seriously injured.

I did my Masters back in 2014-2015 time and was a local observer at the Chichester group for a year or so before life got too busy. You are a great assets for the IAM to get people through the door, one of the reasons I wanted to volunteer was to help increase the awareness for young people. It’s such a good cause and great experience, not to mention great fun!

Nice, a driver needs to use their vehicle's position in the road and within the traffic, to help other drivers know your intentions. Closing the gap briefly if you want to overtake, will hopefully be noticed. But staying 2 vehicle's length or less behind another vehicle for to long is risky, and they might imagine you're going to attempt a crazy overtake. So they might react by changing speed. That then changes your own situation considerably.

Good luck with that Pete, I think you will be fine , as you maybe know IAM roadsmart do a FELLOWS membership that keeps your road skills up to date, by you taking the advanced test every three years. This concentrates the mind on your driving at all times. Thanks for all the brilliant content you produce on the cars I would love to drive myself.

Hi ped, great video anf i appreciate the intensity of your preparation, i used and could recite roadcraft and still can many years later. Im interested in the lack of acknowledgement of the many country houses as danger and wondered if this is just missed from the short clip or there is some relaxation. I appreciate that yiu are dependant on instructors aswell but mine was head of the local traffic and absolutely nothing was missed. Goodluck with the test and looking forward to you achieving a distinction...

Hi Pete, how did you do? I’m currently a Chief Observer for the IAM. Back in 2014, I Passed the RoSPA car test with a gold and then the IAM test test the week after, with a recommendation that I become an Observer. 7 months later I did my National Observer test and Masters test on the same day! Fortunately It went well, I managed a Masters Distinction and passed the NO test too. I have to say it was really intense and I wouldn’t recommend other people do both on the same day as it certainly puts a lot of pressure on. Since then, I have got nearly 30 people through the test. At the time of doing my original RoSPA course I was not looking for a hobby. But since becoming an Observer I think it’s the best hobby in the world. To inspire and witness a transformation in someone’s driving is fantastic. The bonus, is that I have also learned a little from all of my associates along the way, thus also improving my own driving more and more.

As you say you really need to understand the car that you are using. As you know I am a Masters Mentor so I am aware that it is a difficult test made even more so if you want to get a distinction!. I know Shaun so good luck! I'm sure you should be fine. One tip, change of speed limits can sometimes be anticipated when you see houses, or powerlines up ahead. Its likely the speed limit is going to drop to 30mph

Really interesting. I find that people don't overtake any more, I think it's almost frowned upon. I often drive large slow agricultural machines and you can have 1/2 mile of clear straight road in front with me driving almost on the verge (indicating I'm expecting people to come past) and still they sit behind until the frustrated ones 6 cars back try and come past, dangerously. Modern everyday cars have the performance that we'd have given our right arms for 40 years ago with good handling and brakes too but the nuts behind the wheels are much less able.

That shows just how stupid the placement of some speed limit changes are, on the exit of a blind bend such that it caught out 2 advanced drivers, masters level no less (one in training, but still), forcing harsher braking in an attempt to be legal, compromising optimal safety as a result. Advanced drivers should get different coloured reg plates and be exempt from speed limits. They're more of a hinderance than anything do even vaguely with road safety. I'm going to leave my thoughts there because I always end up going off on a rant when speed on public roads is mentioned. :)

Hello Peter! Well you might recall that I have been an IAM since 1989 and still learning ever since! I do have a few reservations about the detail required in the commentary because I am not sure that level of information being relayed to an Observer is conducive to good and safe driving. I do it mentally to this day 1.7 million miles after my test but to relate it to a passenger is good only for the purposes of passing the Test procedure. I think the focus should be on 100% on observation, preparation, reaction and solutions rather than describing obvious standard information. Each pedestrian needs to be assessed for age, direction, predictability and positioning….cyclists need even greater care and add a lot of planning to assess what they will do in those seconds that you first see them…at junctions is a favourite danger spot. Hanging back to assess overtaking is normal but again needs to be applied with a weather eye on the driver behind who might not understand what you are doing…balance distances incorporating the actions of that following car…we could go on for hours! I am really interested in seeing how it all goes and wish you well….it is not an easy task… my assessor was a Police Driving Examiner and as friendly as a wasp in a bottle! Good luck! Richard😀😀😀😀

I passed my Test first time when I was 17 that was nerve racking. I’m 49 never had a bump unless I count a woman who hit me as I was parked and I was in the right. I had to drive a police vehicle to do some work many years later for them and had to sit their own test with written test, eye test and out with a traffic police driving instructor. Ten of us went and I was the only one to pass but they put it down the others did the test in unmarked Cars I got a completely kitted out police Car with all the lights and decals. I don’t know I just chatted away and drove the route after we pulled back in I felt it was like my old driving test turned up to ten. But after he said congratulations you passed this section. So I asked - well your only in the driving seat once of a police car and we were back at a police college “ Can I put on the lights and siren 🚨” he looked and I thought aaaa crap then he smiled sure….😁👍 but that looks even worse, I’m shocking at overtaking I’m happy to sit unless the car is doing 30 in a 60 or something if it’s doing 50-55 I’m happy.

Hi Pete, I’m an observer at my local IAM, I’m 19, but still looking to go further. I’m looking at applying to the HPC, and great to have these videos to refer back to when thinking about the masters. So thanks for that 👍 Also it might be a bit cheeky but if you have any bright ideas of how to publicise our branch at all I’d be keen to hear them. We’re struggling a little with membership numbers at the minute, and I’m the only one sub about 50 on the committee, so I’m sort of on my own for anything online 😂 Cheers

Like another poster, I would also be interested in hearing the latest ‘position’ on overtaking and exceeding the speed limit….back in my day as an Observer, I heard differing stories about examiners who were happy with an appropriate burst of speed to complete an overtake safely versus another who would never pass anyone who broke the limit…ever. I never did find out if there is an official view on this or whether it’s just down to the examiner on the day to make a call, so if you get time to ask this, please! And again, good luck!

Just an opinion/thought, but I strongly suspect there is no time when exceeding the speed limit is acceptable. You should only overtake 'when safe and legal to do so', if you need to exceed the speed limit to complete an overtake safely, you shouldn't have been overtaking as it wasn't safe to do so (and by exceeding the limit, it wasn't legal to, either). I also suspect there would be lenience if you only creep over the limit briefly because you are concentrating on position and surroundings rather than watching the speedo like a hawk while accelerating, but over by a lot or for a sustained period would bring into question whether you are in control of the vehicle, wouldn't it?

@@ChrisPurdy I would agree. My understanding was that there was never any excuse for going over the limit in normal driving conditions, but then someone else told me that he’d been told that a bit of speed to perform a safe overtake was permissible….but then was he just telling porkies!? That’s why I wondered whether Pete could ask his mentor for the latest ‘official’ stance…..let’s see….!

Another one that is interested in the "Overtake" speed rules atm. I can agree with the argument for both sides but I think that a "controlled" burst of speed to get past is more than acceptable. Less time in the danger lane and exposed to anything that is on coming. Hard to overtake a car hovering between 45 & 50mph in a national if you are only allowed to overtake at 60mph, would take some considerable distance.

I did a burst of speed to pass a row of cyclist and ended up with doing a speed awareness test. No excuse to break the speed limit.

Official IAM position is you can't plan an overtake if that plan required speeding. If, part way through an overtake a situation arises where speeding is the best escape option, that is acceptable. E.g. blue lighter comes into view, and slowing and backing off would be more dangerous than pegging it.

If you were to reflect on the experience Peter, would you suggest doing the fellowship first so you get the cadence of regular tests -v- going straight into masters? Good luck for the test, really starting to see your commentary/skills/awareness coming together nicely.

I did my Advanced Test back in 1989, then nothing. Including only brief involvement with an IAM Roadsmart Group (to do a skid pan session the Group organised) then nothing for decades after that. Before I did the Masters, I booked a Masters Taster session in 2021. That was a one off experience that proved invaluable. For a few months I then worked on a few areas that needed improvement (awareness of road signs, keeping within the NSL when overtaking, and smoothness). I then went for the Full Masters Programme in early 2022. The course involves up to 6 preparatory sessions with a Masters mentor (you can buy more sessions if you need them) so you do get plenty of opportunity to work up to consistent Masters standard before the actual test.

I have scoured the internet but cant find the vid in your final test can you provide a provide location?

That was really interesting but I cannot believe how much is involved. The commentary side of it is 1 thing but it’s the move up for the overtake and if it’s not possible ease back and then back up for overtake (do you have to do this when driving normally or can You be a bit more relaxed and not want to overtake everything) ?

seen this type of video many years ago for police driver training....recognising how much information should be processed and why distraction is so troublesome. Understand why your track commentary was so good the other day...well done. PS as a cyclist i often have to be that focused on many rides in similar roads...

As I have got older I have become very risk averse, largely due to a high number of vehicles in my locality involved in quite nasty single car road accidents where they have ended up on their roof, lodged in a tree or planted in a field/ditch. Therefore, I tend to drive like this all the time purely out of self-preservation.

Good work Pedro and all the very best. Looks very intensive. Quick qn. I've just had a front and rear dash cam fitted to my 18 year old daughters first car. My reason is because of her lack of experience if she were to be involved in an incident, either accident or road rage she would immediately feel intimidated. What's your view on dashcams. Do you have them fitted to your cars, if so why and if not why not?

I've tried commentating to myself lately, and it's harder than it looks - everything is internalised at this point, takes so much concentration

Great video! I am myself interested in gaining this experience. As I would like to drive like Chris harris and the stig on top gear. Is this the qualification Chris harris gained to drive like that on top gear? If not what is the one he done to gain his driving skills?

This had nothing to do with how Chris drives unfortunately. Masters is about driving safely and legally at pace on the public highway. Chris learning his craft of race tracks and airfields. The only way to learn to drive like that is time, tyres and the occasional accident 😂

Question Pete. So are you told to overtake what ever. If car in front doing 53 mph in national speed limit , you would need to go 65 to get up and past and back in safely. Is that ok or max you could do is 60 mph spending more time in opposite carriage way , which is more risky. ???

That's quite an intense experience..... One question from me though, zt one point he said you missed an overtake , unless lady p has a lot more performance than I think, in order to make the overtake you'd almost certainly have to exceed the national speed limit...... do the examiners frown upon that, or expect it??

It felt like I was starting again when I changed car. Stick with it and it will click. Getting my mentor Mark to demonstrate a drive helped me a lot 👍 I’ve had my test now and pleased to say I got a distinction. Best of luck with yours 👍

Yeah I thought it was a marginal opportunity too (and I would not have gone for it). But then I remembered that the mentor knows the performance potential of the Porsche, so if he thought it was on I would not have argued with him. I'd just quietly reserve judgement and watch out for a potential repeat opportunity. 😀

I can’t get my head around the speed up, drop back, speed up, drop back relating to possible overtakes, what does this correlate towards economy driving?

We have a monitoring system in our works vans called Lightfoot. The IAM would be no good driving with these fitted. We had a colleague who was IAM and blue light trained it said he was the worst driver in the company.

If the tool is monitoring for economic driving, it will NOT like the smooth but pronounced acceleration to the speed limit, nor the "making progress" aspects of Advanced driving. Economy is a consideration for the advanced driver, but it's not the top priority unless the circumstances so dictate.

Might be super advanced but barely hitting the speed limit. You could do this in a Smart car!

You will do very well PP... Because if you don`t you will get so much Sh1t... lol....... A scenario for you... Car in front doing 45 in a 60(Nat limit).. Safe to over take and you are half way past, the person wakes up and starts to slowly accelerate..... Do you slow down and pull in behind? or continue to overtake, even if you have to exceed the Limit (60) to do so safely?? It has happened to us all.... What do the experts say? Cheers...
