The first story hits home for me. One of my uncles passed away and left everything to just two siblings out of 3. One of which was my mother. It was a good chunk of money, but he left out one sibling in his will because of how she treated him. Her and her family was pissed off and wanted her 3rd. My mother and aunt caved and just gave a small chunk of it to them. And trust me, they really didn't need it financially. It didn't stop my uncle from still trying to get money. The funny part is that they have no idea that what my late uncle had was less than 10% of what my mother has saved up. When they get money, they spend it on lavish items and toys. But for my mother and I, we have just saved. I mean we save for the long term to the point where I just cashed out savings bonds I've had for 35 years. I'm sure I'll have an AITJ story if I let any of the savings slip.

That first story I’m dumbfounded that he got sued and lost, I just don’t get how they made a case purely based on their choice to have multiple kids knowing they could barely support it and having him pay for gas and car damages when he was like 16? He was your responsibility at the time so of course you’re obligated to do these things.

Story 1: I'm annoyed with the wife. I HATE when people try to count my pockets. If I was the wife I would have just said something like "The mortgage is manageable." and left it at that. Asking what someone's mortgage is feels intrusive and I wouldn't dignify the question with a response. Seems like the wife overstepped especially b/c he clearly didn't have a close relationship to his family since it was mentioned she wanted to meet the sister after years of marriage and having a child. She basically told a stranger that the house came from lottery winnings, not cool.

And well, when the child isn't a minor anymore... The account is on the child name, so they still couldn't have it while the child now could do what he wants. I found weird how little children money is protected in USA. Being able to have a joint account with a minor is weird. It's impossible here, when children work, to have parents who could have the money. We have law, they bank account are in the child name and only his. If you come into a large sum of money a good rule of thumb is to hire a team consisting of financial advisor, accountant, lawyer and personal assistant. The financial advisor will give you advice on your money such as investing, budgeting and so forth so when you're really old you still have money. The accountant pays your bills, pays your taxes and so forth. The lawyer handles your legal affairs because people will try to sue you. Finally your personal assistant is your go to person for anyone trying to reach you. They also handle your schedule because you will be very busy. This is the very least you need as a wall between you and the public.

I cut off my family when I came to the realization that they wanted people to feel sorry for them, because of how bad of a life they had growing up and things that later happened in life, and would use whatever means to get others' attentions focused on them. My father who left me decades ago, I wasn't even 9 years when he left, he died recently and I was told by my mother and sister for being 'a self-serving child' that I didn't want to go to the funeral which was a 12 hour drive from where I lived. They told me I should have made efforts to contact him and it was my own fault that I never did. They couldn't even answer the question of why I should since he knew I lived, how to contact me but never made one attempt since he left, just kept saying I was being a narcissitic child. At the funeral, I was practically dragged there by my family, I learned that not only did my father have a girlfriend but he was helping to raise her kids! I literally had to hurt myself, dug my fingernails into my hands and biting my tongue, to keep myself from screaming at the funeral about how he had been raising other kids for YEARS but never once even told his girlfriend he had a son already. My late dad's side of the family was aware of these facts and not only that but my own mother and sister told me to keep any opinions I had about my father to myself. I only wished I made the decision to cut ties with them alot sooner than I did.

That family literally tried everything in their power to get every single penny of that man’s money, even going as far as to bring up past events dating years back (which I find petty and ridiculous). The gas bit I can understand to an extent but the inflation bit is excessive because you’re taking lower prices from various years and changing them to what may be currently expensive (and that’s saying something because gas prices in my area were like $2.60 or something a while back and now they’re about 4 bucks to the gallon). As for the bit with throwing the beer bottle at someone, that’s definitely stretching it. They’re filing for an assault charge that’s not really even relevant anymore given that it seems nothing was done when it originally happened (least not involving law enforcement and/or courts). And to top it all off, they decide to sue only AFTER hearing about the lottery and not while they were mopping about how he wasn’t having to pay for education and living expenses and also get paid due to his military services.

That Karen story reminded me of the time my friend and her mother where waiting at a red light. A car in front just out of nowhere pulled the reverse and purposely bumped into the mom’s car. They got out to demand money, the guys looked like your typical rich brats. Since it was a red light, and the mom didn’t move and got bumped into on purpose… she refused to sit there for HOURS to wait for the insurance company to get there and pay money she didn’t owe. So what she did was back up, (since there wasn’t anyone behind her) and book it when the light turned green. The idiots chased her for a long while honking to hopefully make her slow down and park, but the mom ended up losing them XD it was wild. People would do the stupidest things for money

Op, I'm extremely proud of you. You made the wise decision to protect your lottery winnings from entitled family members. Cutting off contact was justified, as they showed blatant disregard for your financial autonomy by demanding money and trips, despite your responsible approach to invest for a secure future. Their subsequent legal threats and frivolous lawsuits further demonstrated their toxic behavior, forcing you to relocate and incur significant costs. Experts advise lottery winners to maintain anonymity precisely to avoid such exploitation by greedy relatives. You have every right to decide how to manage your own hard-earned wealth without familial interference.

My family had a massive medical lawsuit once Story: we have a Siberian husky "as y'all know they are extremely dramatic" well we use to live in a neighborhood with know some of the closer neighbors. There was this one family tho, lived like slobs and had zero parenting skills. Well that kid was 5-6 and was always unsupervised and walked up and down the street with her parents. Well this kid was notorious for torturing animals "throwing rocks, yanking tails, hitting with sticks" and everyone knew. Well one day her ball rolled down the hill into our yard while our dog was outside "we didn't see it, another neighbor took a testament.". Well you can probably guess what happened after that. Well a cop shows up and explains the situation. we where confused on what's going on and our dog was still outside and we had no idea this event even. The cop walked past our dog without a issue and didn't have a issue getting into the kennel. Well from the cops report they said our dog ran up the hill and attacked the girl and she left in a ambulance cause of my dog. Well a year later we received a lawsuit for the medical bills "can't remember how much but it wasn't a small amount". Well this is where things start to stop making sense in their claims. They said that our dog ran up the hill and attacked her, well on the paperwork it said our dogs leash extend into the road "we had picture that shows how far he can reach "5-7 feet away from the road". Well after about a year of going back a forward with lawyers the claims where completely drops "lack of evidence and inconsistent information" they dug their own hole and the child got taken away

First story could have been avoided by him explaining to his wife how his family was and how he didn't want them to know about the winnings. UNLESS he already did then honestly the wife is just as bad because she said that KNOWING he didn't want his family to know but she wanted to make this entitled joke of a sister feel bad... making the wife just as bad as the family... now I doubt the wife knew but IF she did she's just as much part of the problem. Second story: Do what you love... f**k everyone else. End. Of. Story. 4th & 5th - Karma. 6th story: That's what you get for trusting people... now I hate to say this but you can't trust even your family. I had a similar issue with my mother though she didn't 'steal' anything. I was working full time and going to college spending upwards of 100 in gas a week (back when it was 2-3 a gallon... i miss that), and spending 10-15 hours a day driving, working, and in class. I paid for most of my own food and gave 200 bucks a month for power and rent (total rent for the house was 300 USD for 4 members and power was 100-ish and most of it was draining because of her always having 3 sewing machines, a computer and laptop, and 3 fans in her room alone I had a pc and a single fan which wasn't always on). So 200 USD was enough to cover my portion of everything and then some. One day she went INTO MY ACCOUNT and checked my balance and chastized me for spending 100 dollars on gaming stuff and acted like I should have been paying her more instead of paying for things that brought ME joy. So I saw that red flag and had her taken off of my account the next day. She didn't like it but I can't trust her to not guilt trip me for paying for things I enjoy instead of supporting her more than I already was. (Basically I was paying my rent and FULL power, and all my food the only expense that wasn't really factored in was trash as the house was on Well water, and when I say 'power' i mean internet aswell. My break down was this 100 for my 1/4th of rent, 100 for food, 100 for my 14th of power and internet. Making it 300. Though technically my '1/4th' of power and net should have been something like 35 I was already paying 75 more than my fair fair share of those and she was made I wasn't paying more. I put my foot down and she stopped that kind of behavior but honestly if I wasn't such a hard a** she would have taken much more advantage of me than she did.

What if you love doing something that hurts people like throwing rocks at People’s houses. I get what people mean by that statement but some people are going to take it the wrong way and think that they should do whatever they want(Including illegal and morally wrong) without thinking about other people like you should do what you want as long as it’s not harming anyone but if it’s harming people and disturbing the peace you should listen to people

She took out money for cigarettes and wine and clothes when she wanted to. I realized when I was sixteen what she was doing and closed the account and set up a new one. My mother was angry at me for it. July 11th is ten years of her dead. I'm less than a year of getting out of debt from fixing the trouble she got me into. It was so bizarre for me and my sisters to be treated differently by aunts and uncles because my dad wasnt a fuck up.

The final story is heartbreaking. It’s really depressing to know there’s people who can do this to their own children. In a way, it’s worse than physical abuse, because as bad as that is, it is usually a heat of the moment thing. This is systematically tearing down everything your child is working hard to achieve for themselves over many years. Disgusting - they deserve the rope.

My parents didn't noticed the pair of socks I took with me untill we been home. Years later I am a ten years old who finds a pair of socks back in my closet I had never seen it again I asked my mother if this belonged to her and she answered me "no it's yours you stole it from a shop" and then she told me the story which I obviously had no idea about.
