Panasonic has always lead the software upgrade game. Literally making a new camera out of your old camera with new features. I believe they forced Sony to do any of it. And made Nikon and Canon have to even play ball. They used to make you buy a new camera to get new features.

100% agree with you David. I have an a1 and it took me a long time to save up for it and now I feel that the giant that is SONY is stepping on us and leaving us behind in the mud. I too would like to have focus stacking / breathing etc... injected via firmware, but have no idea how to take all of SONY camera owners concerns to this behemoth company and ping them so hard as to turn around and give the client what they want. I did hear somewhere that the division that runs cameras is separate to their TV and white-goods and that the camera division has to meet its target in sales via new camera sales rather than put resources and money into firmware updates for older cameras. I just hope SINNY sorry SONY is watching all the youtubers like yourself and listening.... I too will never buy another flagship from SONY. All the best Dave great content.

I agree! They lost a lot of trust when it comes to buying their gear because they literally came out with the fx3 MONTHS after the a7siii and yet the a7siii which is completely identical as a whole hasn't been given any of the updates. Anyone thinking of getting the a7sIV, if they do come out, I wouldn't recommend getting it because an fx3ii would follow shortly and get firmware updates.

Sony is doing the opposite of Canon Cripple hammer. they improve their next camera so old3r user will be tempted to buy, it being cheaper be damned. and they keep doing that endlessly. so FW update being super slow is the only thing keeping this economy going. basically the smartphne tactic but on camera. they dont care what the conventional camera pricing tier dictates. they just make cameras specialized at what they do and consumer better buy them for what they have at release.

I'm a firm middle of the road camera user, and only upgrade my camera when I start hitting limitations. So basically I buy a camera with advanced features for it's time and use it for a few years. This means the latest midrange Sony camera is a big step up from what I had. So, while it would be nice to have the latest and greatest, sticking to the middle ground and updating every 4 or 5 years works for me.

I bought a Sony Alpha 6100 camera and lens kit for $1600 on credit at BestBuy and a year later inquired about BestBuy's trade-in deal, they wanted to give me $30 for it. I am still paying this debt off several years later. This camera was advertised as 4k (this is why I bought it) but shuts off after about 20 minutes with severe "heating problems" so no, is it not really 4k. My IPhone 14 and my Samsung S22 are more compact, they will run in 4k for hours on end, have many video features and I use them nearly every day for streaming and on the go photos. My Sony sits in a drawer 99% of the time. Maybe someday I might get another Sony when the heating problems are fixed and it becomes more reasonably priced. Forget about the good old days when things "appreciated" in value, once this camera is bought it loses most of its value.

If it were a film camera it wouldn't be possible and you wouldn't care. You own on of the sharpest tools ever created in your craft and you've lost confidence for not having focus frame colors, which in my opinion is a gimmick feature I'd personally never use. @@SWATOP3 Again, the A7s was never the "top" camera. It's a hybrid camera system, by that designation it's a stills photo camera with limited video capabilities. People are calling it top and flagship because of gear hype that they themselves created. Sony has never called the A7s it's flagship camera. There are two other cameras just like it with their own niches, the A7 and the A7r. They can't all be the 'flagship" camera. The FX3 and FX30 are the bottom of the cinema camera line. Aaaaand the A1 is, even with the ability to shoot 8k, a primarily stills camera. One of the best you can possible buy and people are losing it over a primarily anamorphic firmware update intended for a clearly delineated cinema line. The A1 isn't stagnant, it's unbelievable! It's already the pinnacle of a stills camera at that price. But it has a place as it is a stills camera that currently has everything it needs. On the Sony web page for the camera all of the marketing is stills based. KZread influencers marketed it as a video camera, because youtube influencers primarily make videos. That's not Sony's fault. The other manufactures have clearly different goals, they are giving us great cameras, but Sony is giving us amazing cameras! They're sensors are pushing the tech forward. You really want a thing to complain about, do me this FAVOR PLEASE, complain about RED. Help fight what's holding back all of our cameras Sony or otherwise. I'm counting my blessings. I opted for the FX3 simply because I live in extremely hot climates. So benefited from the considerable update. Though I'm fully aware that Sony classes all FX cameras as professional cineline. The issues here is that they conceive the A cameras to be Domestic line so dont feel the need to update. Love the new ZV although your severely limited on the lenses you can use simply because body can't handle then physically.

@@Average1212 I agree with you in many ways. If its a studio camera there are much cheaper options available. As I say I live in very hot climates so highly impracticable for use there. Hence why I bought the FX3 due to its fan. Whats interesting as well. If you watch the Sony Videos it says 120 ffs is upgradable. That shouts at me as a pricing model. Not one YT review has picked this up only saying it will come later. At a cost methinks. And at what cost ? Include the upgrade and camera cost then the FX3 seems to be the perfect choice.

We will see the reality about a month after it releases and the small channels start reviewing things they bought. Like the Auto focus on the s5ii, not quite where the early reviewers said it was.

As someone who buys a lot of gear, I do find this thing you’ve brought up quite frustrating. Everything you mentioned, I was like “yup, yup, exactly.” All of these companies have their strategy to try and get you to buy everything or continually upgrade rather than giving you a camera with everything it’s technically capable of (especially with firmware updates). At the end of the day, Sony like any other company aims to make a profit. And this is part of their strategy. Canon does, Apple does it, etc. The cynic in me believes that the companies that “consider the consumer” with nice updates do that out of necessity. If they were in Sony or Canon’s position, I feel like they probably wouldn’t be as on top of the firmware updates. The term for this that originates from Camera Conspiracies is the cripple hammer. All that being said, it’s still a very exciting time to be a consumer with so much technology at our disposal. I do naively hope this attitude changes from the big companies, but most likely it’ll continue to be sort of experience for consumers.

Flagship features always migrate to lower end products. And older products don't always have the ability to be upgraded. This isn't limited to the camera world, you can see the same thing in any technology-driven market. As for Sony, there are some things that they should bring to the A1 but haven't, and I hope they do. However it's not realistic to expect them to limit functionality of their mass market products just to protect the feelings of those who bought more expensive products in the past. Always buy what fits your needs and budget.

I’m wondering about the hardware limitations, too. The a7siii is almost three years old, which is a long time for CPU development. It might be that the cameras just don’t have the processing power to run the latest software. The moment one buys a camera or a computer or what have you, the clock is ticking. The question I ask is, does the thing do what it was supposed to at the time I purchased it? Granted there are exceptions, such as when a company promises future features in a firmware update, but ultimately technology presses on. If the better technology is cheaper, so much the better-it could make the platform more viable if there are more paying customers. I suppose it’s easier for me to say this because I stopped buying flagship products a while ago, I tend to wait when I do buy, and I tend to hold onto gear.

@@DavidOastler We actually don't know that. It has the same sensor as the FX3 but the FX3 has active cooling (aka a fan). That could allow the processing chips to run at higher frequencies, or for more powerful versions of those chips to have gone into the FX3 from the start. More transparency from Sony would help a lot in clearing this up, but in the absence of that we can't know for sure what is going on other than Sony has upgraded the FX3 but not the A7Siii.

I won't buy another Sony flagship for the same reasons... they've turned their flagship into a disposable camera, one that is "meant" to be discarded after the next version of whatever model they produce. As primarily a videographer, it's left me wondering just what the A1 is supposed to be a "hybrid" of? Certainly not a flagship hybrid of the still and cinema line when their cheapest cinema camera has pro features the A1 lacks. I'm still hoping Sony will recognize the anger, come to their senses, and release a substantial update for these cameras (after all, they haven't discounted the A1 yet, so the A2 must not be ready).

You have a very good point and you are correct 100%. This situation really comes down to people having to think hard about what is nice to have and what do I need when buying a camera. Maybe if I can be the devils advocate for a second. As a full time working pro who bought two a9’s and last year two A1’s. The price difference between the flagship models was always worth it because they earned themselves back in money coming in from work in a matter of weeks / months. Features like high res high speed af, electronic flash easy and fast integrated video all in one body were essential and the time of purchase and need that. But as all these other things of other cameras are nice to have for me. I really understand the frustrations this brings forth for people spending lots of money on cameras as a hobby/job on the side but flagship cameras are not aimed at every body. These high end cameras used to be nice to have’s for enthousiasts as it came with things other bodies didnt. But there is a shift. If you need it buy it. If it’s something that would be nice to have be aware it will be coming to a cheaper camera soon.

My current body, the OM-1 is awesome. It will continue to have firmware updates as well. The major brands such as Canon, Nikon etc are catching up with some of the computational features of the Olympus. Sony purposefully lag behind. Sony simply love you to buy their newest body, with limited features as regulary and as often as they can. Sony simply want your money and as much as they can screw you out of. Mate, you will get no hate from me, just sympathy for being screwed by Sony. Check out the price of the OM-1, compare it's features and abilities to the inferior Sony. Couldn't agree more with you, and honestly it is sad. I don't shoot Sony but I know lots who do and although they don't always like to admit it, I'm sure most flagship Sony buyers will agree with you. I'm just a news photojournalist/photog and I still use the Nikon DSLR flagship a pair of D6's and even they have received major firmware upgrade. Particularly the Firmware 1.20 made huge updates that even further made the autofocus system by far the best of any DSLR ever made, by anyone. My D6 has never really let me down and has only gotten better over time, although I'll admit I was a bit disappointed to learn it didn't have many of the rumored specs, it's still the best camera I've ever used, for what I do. I had a Z9 early on as our newspapers have a great relationship with Nikon/NPS, and some of our other photog's use the Z9's. I just prefer the D6 and I do have a Nikon Z7, which I never thought I'd be saying. The Z7 though, and D6 both have received major, camera changing updates over the past couple of years and both are still extremely capable. The Z6 and Z7 got the Firmware 3.0 and then 3.4, which were game changing! They made the old single processor Z7/Z6 to compete with some of the best camera's on the market and AF has drastically improved! So David you are 100% correct in your assumptions that Sony could easily update and upgrade their flagships with firmware. Yet they don't and nobody really calls them out, or enough over it. If Nikon, Canon, Fuji and Panasonic can all do it, surely Sony can. Good for you for always speaking your mind, I'm the same way these days, and I could care less if I upset any fanboys or clubs. The Z-user's, especially the Z9 users get really made when I say I would never trade my D6 for one or that I could careless about the Z9...boy do I ever get hate for saying anything remotely critical of their "baby!" I think some people must justify to themselves that they are correct in their purchasing decision, how dare you criticize what they love. Oh well, like you I'm at the stage in my life where I don't care. I've been watching you for a couple of years on and off, and I don't even shoot Sony, so respect!

The current state is anyone with a large enough following that doesn't outright bash the company will likely have them reach out and want to partner with them for publicity and that encompasses many people that aren't higher end users buying those flagship cameras. When Sony made the A7iii and later the A7Riii they really hit it out of the park and pros considered them a real camera brand and a fresh new option to Canon or Nikon, etc. Now we see more less of this and more gimmicky stuff in an attempt to capture lower end markets. I'm still overall happy with Sony, yes I'd like to see more for my A1 and hope they don't abandon us only offering new features for an A1mk2 but the lenses and entire ecosystem is hard to beat. I do question long term durability of their cameras and lenses, I've already had a few repairs as have some of my friends. My 200-600 had a screw inside come out, lens worked fine but I could hear it rattling around so it had to be repaired. Stuff like that along with lens feet breaking, lens mounts getting stressed from carrying a moderate lens by the body shouldn't happen imho. Coming from Canon I had my share of repairs there too but different ones, I do believe their cameras are more durable and can take getting knocked around.

You're right. I recently bought three A7C's for videography and chose them based on their overall compact size and being full frame with E series lens fittings. Then the ZV-E1 comes along... I mean, I am more than happy with the quality of the A7C video output because it is mega crisp and clarity is incredible, the body is made of metal and it has an EVF for photography. But 4k60 and AI tracking composition and cropping would have been a nice add. Sony should add 4k60 to the A7C asa a midpoint. Remembering back to the old Canon EOS M mk1 when Magiclantern came along and added all their extensive menu hacks and RAW video, so why can't Sony add things easily too?

Well, the a7C is actually more of an entry level camera for full frame. Plus a replacement is rumored to be imminent. So I’m not so sure an update for it is really likely.

The firmware update for the A7C is coming. It's called A7C Mark 2.

I agree. I think if you're selling something that expensive you have to build confidence in your customers. if you can't do that and there are other options, I'm afraid people will jump. Especially when the competitors are on the offensive and you sit there and do nothing?

I love your opinion. I never know with Sony what camera to get… so I stay with Canon but Canon EOS R was my last Canon purchase. This new Sony seems like a great buy…
