    Your undone rant hit the nail on the head. I'm extremely happy to see Sony have not only included almost all the A7Siii/FX3 features, and hugely improved them in this awesome new body, but so extremely disappointed at the sheer lack of firmware support for 'higher tier' models. After spending thousands of dollars on high end equipment for both work and youtube videos, with one lazy firmware update after 2 years, this new addition feels bittersweet. That said, it's early days and one can only hope Sony have something in store for us FX3/A7Siii users, but I won't hold my breath. Thanks for your work again Gerald, you are truly great.

    I couldn't agree more about Sony's less than stellar firmware improvements. I bought the A7s3 because it was THE upgrade we had been waiting for. When the FX3 got announced I wasn't too bothered because it was just the same thing slightly more focused for video. Having said that, had I known the FX3 was coming I would have bought the FX3, NOT the A7s3. I began to be worried when the FX3 received the LUT/ISO update. I have wanted internal LUTs on my cameras forever, and was extremely frustrated when this feature was nowhere to be seen on the A7s3 despite having zero reasons it can't. This camera makes me extremely excited for the next flagship (FX4 or whatever) but at the same time, based on this review its clear a great many of these features could be added to my current A7s3. It makes me worried about buying anything at launch.

  • @TableRumble

    @TableRumble

    I cannot agree more as another A7s3 buyer at first release. If I know there's a FX3 with tally light and no EVF and better body, I'll definitely wait. But OK, A7S3 is good enough, until FX3 got internal LUTs but not available on the A7S3. Now with this ZV-E1, what I can see is that Sony trying to push previous model buyers to change their camera by assining differernt software and intentional no-upgrade. So my decision is to keep using A7S3 and push my self to use it well, wait for another model that truely meets all my needs.

    Sony is doing the opposite of Canon Cripple hammer. they improve their next camera so old3r user will be tempted to buy, it being cheaper be damned. and they keep doing that endlessly. so FW update being super slow is the only thing keeping this economy going. basically the smartphne tactic but on camera. they dont care what the conventional camera pricing tier dictates. they just make cameras specialized at what they do and consumer better buy them for what they have at release.

    Thank you for speaking up (again!) about the Sony firmware situation. I’ve been a Sony lover since I switched to the system. I’m a Sony pro support member. I’m heavily invested with 16 e-Mount lenses, three bodies, Sony’s own microphones, and so on. I’ve recommended Sony to others. I’ve successfully talked people into switching. But now I’m not willing to buy any Sony body and I find it difficult to recommend Sony bodies to anyone. The lack of support is a serious problem. Maybe buying from the bottom of the line makes some sense. But the value just isn’t there when Sony won’t support their higher end cameras. I’m just waiting for the Z6 II to go on sale again and it will be my next camera body. Whether this is me buying a single body for the narrow purpose of using it to do focus stacking in macro photography or the beginning of a return to Nikon is up to Sony. My business is Sony’s to lose. And they are certainly making it more and more likely they will lose it.

    Sony's lack of firmware support creates an interesting situation. One would assume they do it so everyone will keep buying new cameras to get the new features, but it kind of incentivises the opposite, at least for people who have to consider a budget. If the features included when you buy are all you'll ever have you'll want to hold off buying anything new for as long as you possibly can

    Great video! Looks like a great camera option for new buyers. Those of us with existing models definitely appreciate the firmware commentary. It must actually be harder for Sony to manage such a fragmented firmware/software base. I know I'll certainly think twice about buying another Sony body in future given their lack of support for my current camera even with the added cost of switching systems. It just seems very self-defeating on their part. Do you ever hear back from your Sony contacts on this kind of thing? The lack of communication with the rest of us is bad enough.

    You were totally right about Sony and their laziness to make firmware updates. I think even the Sony A7III/A7RIII can have firmware improvements with the new menu. I wonder why they waste materials (which is not environment friendly) instead of delivering firmware updates on older capable cameras. They can sell the Firmware updates I don't care, but they have to listen to all those requests for firmware updates since the A7II ! Because the previous cameras cost too much as hell since the A7 3rd generation. I was thinking about switching to Canon since 2022, 1 year after I bought my A7RIII And with the new Canon R8... man, why did I buy Sony A7RIII at $2700 in 2021 if they don't release firmware updates... Canon R8 does so much better at a lot cheaper price. At least release a color science Firmware update for older cameras Sony !

  • @timbrowntown
    @timbrowntown Жыл бұрын

    Wow! Sony definitely needs to update their firmware across the board now. At least with the new menu system. At over $2K, it seems like a lot for someone coming from the APS-C world, but you have to think about the fact that new flagship cellphones (which tend to include just camera upgrades these days) are running $1000+. Wait 2-years more and you can upgrade your ZV-E10 to this...

    After having the Sony A7iv for almost a year I can say it's not really the camera for me. I shoot home videos, small client commercial/promo videos and photograph sports/video. I think the perfect combo for me would be this Sony ZV-E1 and the Sony A9. Those two combined would still cost less than the A7Siii/FX3/A7Riv

    It depends on where you are - ZVE1 in my country (and I'm living in the EU, so nothing extreme or customs fee related) costs significantly more in preorder than the A7IV does already (but so did the FX30 for some time until it reached the price similar to the A7IV) and less than 1000€ less than the A7S3.

    Great review! It seems like Sony will be the creator of its own demise if they continue to neglect their loyal customers with this pathetic lack of software update and new software features! Sony, hello! Canon also some time ago decided to treat their user with total disrespect, and guess what? Lots of them have switched to Sony! If you gonna keep neglecting your fan base - now there’s a valuable proposition from Panasonic, and they are way better in terms of software updates, than you, Sony! You might face the same exodus as Canon had if you continue on this path!

    You are the only reviewer who knows that overheating is one of the major issues for many videographers and making real-life tests, this is why I mostly just watch your review. I am using Fujifilm XH2 for conference shootings. Plugging a USB-C charger, shooting 8K and using auto-reframe in Davinci to make it look like the camera is following the speaker works like a magic for me and even in 8K I have never had an overheating issue and I am yet to use the external fan.

    Another great review by one of the world's best camera reviewers. It really is a fantastic little camera which sort of makes me look dumb for having forked out all that hard earned lolly when I bought the A1back in 2021.I had this niggle in the back of my brain when I bought it though. A little voice kept saying "don't do it , it will be out of date in about 9 months" I hope when Sony eventually/hopefully, do bring an update for the A1 firmware that I will not be among those who will be bitterly disappointed that many of the new features we have seen in the latest crop will be a glaring omission!
