That demo of autoframing is actually quite impressive. This is more useful than I thought. For vloggers, $2200 is steep, but as B-cam for you pros, it's really good.

Nice overview. For vlogging it does make a lot of sense. The size seems very convenient. That auto aperture adjustment in automatic mode when multiple people are in the frame is smart. It's impressive how they manage to make the autoframing feature look decent. I did see that Gerald measured overheating times for streaming use that were too short for that style of content (assuming I didn't misinterpret his results), so there are some limitations. Hopefully Sony refreshes the ZV-E10 with the newer sensor. Then they'd really have a great option for the market they appear to be targeting.

The problem with refreshing the ZV-E10 is that Canon is going after this market with a full frame sensor for $1500. And Nikon has the Z5 on sale for $1100. Sony is surrendering the entry level full frame market. As smartphones continue to gain ground on cameras they going to become less relevant. The competition is going cheaper to give people a reason to pick up a camera.

I think the reason 4k120 is coming later, has to be the overheating. I guess the next firmware will contain code to deal with heat management a bit better.

Yeah I wonder how they will deal with that since it already overheats pretty quickly in 4k60. I mean look at Gerald’s tests in room temperature. Imagine in sunshine and summer temperatures - brutal. I’m keeping my FX3. It’s far more suited for professional use.

@@troywalt4834 True you won't get the Full Frame compression and background blur on the FX30 but we're only talking about 1 stop difference. Most videographers talk about stopping down while shooting anyway. $400 cheaper, better screen, more reliable, more durable, and better ergonomics. Don't get me wrong... there are things I like more about the ZV-E1 but the FX30 offers more bang for the buck.

The FX30 is a far better choice for professional use. Reliability is everything. These KZreadrs aren’t working under the pressures of a production environment when the cameras have to work. The FX30 is a fantastic camera. Would be my pick too if I need a companion for my FX3.

The tracking is awesome. It's the same system as the a7rv ... btw, you can use that in stills too.. Would you get this or the FX30?

...Manny, that video intro was OFF THE CHARTS!! That was AMAZING and truly shows the capabilities of the E1.... You also hit it on the head about current high-end camera owners buying this because they don't want to take their expensive equipment out everyday, or on shoots late at night or in risky/'sketchy' areas... I own an A1 and have always wanted an A7SIII or FX3: I can now buy this, use it for those uses, AND take advantage of the AI auto framing and improved AF - this is an instant buy for me! ON THE OTHER SIDE: If Sony cannot properly update my A1; just WHY should I think of purchasing a future A1II??? 😡

Pros cannot fathom that a lot of people are gonna have an all in one a7siii, fx3 and a7V lol which is cheaper, smaller and smarter than all their cameras they bought lol

No. This thing won’t work for more than 15 minutes in summer heat rendering it unusable. FX3 and FX30 with their heat management and robust metal bodies are much better for serious use than this plastic 1 slot indoor camera.

I think this camera is for vloggers who have been vlogging for a bit with their $1k camera and are looking to get a little more serious. The ergo cons might keep me from getting and just go with the fx3. Nonetheless are great camera. New stabilization is epic as well.

FINALLY someone that make an honest review about this camera, it is way too expensive for a "vlogger", not sure what Sony defines as a vlogger these days, hence why many people are angry about this camera and trolls fan boys like Peter Lindgren don't get! @Chiyloko Hi, thanks for the question. Generally im not that technical or well up on gear but getting a camera largely depends on your budget and needs. If the budget is low you could get the A7iii very cheap and it would be enough to get started, see how you like film-making without spending too much at 1st! Then you could upgrade later. If you have a larger budget you would better getting the A7Siii or the new ZV-E1 as they are better quality and meant for video specifically!

I do agree.. Right now, I got my ZV_E10, which is pretty much so good for me for what I use it for... but for low light stuff .. wish to go for the this new ZV_E1 .. which looks like the ZV_E10 on steroids but for the price tag . Price tag. Then why won't I go in for the X-T5?

I’m in the same boat. If this was $1499 it would be a game changer. But 3x the ZV-E10 price and still will probably overheat? I don’t really know who this camera is for… Feels like it more for pro/semi pro videographers who want a cheaper B-roll / 2nd angle. What vloggers really needs this much in a smallish body and no EVF?

is it comparable to the FX30? I'm kinda confused on which to get now.

I have an fx3 and I cover tech events, this is perfect for me. The auto features are so convenient.

Great camera. Just waiting for the A9III. We gotta keep bringing up the firmware problems until Sony does something about it.

This is a really good B-cam or crash cam for a well-educated content creator, but it's also a REALLY good tourist-y camera with a pancake f/2.8 lens in a way that the FX3 and A7RV are not. It's small, it's light, and easily deployable. Since it has the same sensor and processor package as the A7SIII, it's also a really good "cheaper" camera for someone just starting out who DOES know what they're doing, but doesn't have $5K to spend on an FX3 and all the accessories that need to go with it.

I get this is targeting vloggers and KZreadrs but they always feel like they sacrifice something from the stills side. I don't know if there's a middle ground body type but if there is, I'm just not aware of it. (or I'd need to leave Sony)

For the vlogging market this is high in regular Photography or Videography it is mid range. But if video was my main thing for the price i would go with a FX30

When the FX30 comes in for less money, has a built in fan to deal with overheating, etc. it was a no brainer for me. I don't vlog and I use lights/reflectors/wide open lenses, so APS-C wasn't an issue for me.

I heard this somewhere and it makes sense. They didn't add 4k 120 initially so they could advertise no crop. They're going to add it as a firmware update because there's going to be a crop. My guess is that a crop helps reduce heat. The difference in this cam and the A7sii is the size which makes the zve1 worse at heat dissipation. They're going to balance the crop with heat dissipation. Most likely they have some data on how long people generally shoot in 4k 120.

The R8 is really tempting, but the lack of IBIS is the one thing that I can’t get over. Especially if you don’t want to mess with gimbals all of the time.

Can I use the Sony 11mm f1.8 lens on zv-e1 for 4k vlogging?

I am still using the good old A7iii and this camera makes perfect sense to me. Period. It is going to be a huge upgrade for me.

Might wonder if it's not shipping with 4k120 is due to overheating issues significantly reducing continuous record time limit and they don't want people focusing on that shortcoming during the initial sales out the gate. Other than that, it sounds like there's a lot to like.

I'm more impressed by the lens performance of the tamron 17-28 than by the camera 😊❤ I would never guess, that you use this lens for that beautiful content!!! So for me I stay with A74 also for videos, and have no problem with its 60fps crop because this tamron lens compensate it with its zoom range

That AI pulls out all the details the same lenses on another camera wouldn’t be as good because there is no AI constantly framing , reframing , refining the image in nanoseconds.

I know Gerald Undone says it a lot, and I'm glad you both also said it, but we need more people giving Sony shit for their firmware strategy on their "Old" cameras.

12:15 I know you were in the moment, but I doubt that it could replace some of your photo cameras. Without a mechanical shutter, and with so much flash you use that's a no go.

How long can I stream until it overheats?

Travel camera and BTS camera purchase for me. FX6 and A7RV are my main cameras (video and stills). FX3 is still my main B cam for multicam shooting.

It feels priced high to me for a camera targeting "vloggers" or more casual video creators. Although that auto tracking feature where you can film yourself and have the frame move with you is INCREDIBLE. I hope they make an a7cII with that feature. I have a74 but want a back up camera that is lighter smaller and can still take great photos unlike the ZV-e1 in terms of stills.

@TerryWarfield The very clear justifiable reason it doesn't have 4K 120p right out of the gate is the issue of thermal management or more like the lack there of. The body is much smaller than the other cameras you mentioned. I am pretty sure when it comes with the firmware in June it will be a time limited recording option.

It has overheating issues which is a step backwards imo

No doubt Dexter tv show intro influenced you. I just wish you did this with a Canon. I know you were showcasing this camera, but the Canon color science is so nice. 4k 120 is not a deal breaker for me either. I just would run the footage through Topaz at 2x slowmo.
