You're going to backstab him with a ballista? Uh-huh. With a fucking siege weapon? Uh-huh. There must a rule against this.

Technical answer, since they used 2nd Edition D&D as props for rulebooks: There IS a rule against that 😀

You forgot an important one: "Dude, how can I ever cast my spell of in time?" (Guy looks up from the table, speaking slowly) 'HIDE BEHIND THE PILE OF DEAD BARDS.' *few seconds pass* *In game, everyone jumps behind this large pile of dead bards*

Chunky Salsa Rule: If anything happens that would reduce your character's head to chunky salsa, you're dead, irrelevant of HP. Inverted Chunky Salsa Rule: If the damage a character received is over triple what it could possible take, there is nothing left but Chunky Salsa.

Way back in 1987, a friend told me of how, either his thief or other players rogue stole pants off of a npc. Years later, The Gamers tavern scene, pants stolen. A truthful occurrence.

It's a typical DM answer for a reason... It's a siege weapon. how does one go unnoticed setting that up.

Ah righ, when you have all the time to choose betwin weapons and set up a ballesta that came out of nowhere if it was not on his tiny pockets.

RobLucci the cyberpunk spin off is an spin of 2 OR 3, so tecnically yeah, is a sequel of 1.

Ignore that last one, I would as a dm argue that the turn would have to take place within 6 seconds ( as is a turn In game time based on that clearly being an encounter just prior to the initiate being rolled) both hunk and his actions would roll on the surprise round ( I also play 3.0 forgive me if a later version contradicts what I'm saying)

I'm not sure what game they are playing, but in D&D a Balista can't do that much damage, even if you somehow got a DM to agree to let it count as a Backstab. He says he gets x3 multiplier from behind (which also tells us it's not D&D), meaning the balista itself dealt 88 damage. The various balista in D&D I can find would do 30 to 48 damage on maximum damage roll.

They don't directly use the rules to avoid licensing issues. If you watch the movie into, the characters have "GLE" and "LUK" as attributes on their character sheets.

In 2nd edition; thieves got a multiplier to damage for attacks considered a sneak attack. This multiplier was x3 for thieves between 5th and 8th level. To quote the PHB: "When attacking someone from surprise from behind, a thief can greatly increase his chances to successfully hit... and greatly increase the amount of damage his blow causes." This attack worked with any weapon; using a balista makes a lot of sense since it has a better damage to be multiplied then; say; a dagger; which would have a pitiable 1d4 x3 = 3d4 damage. (This was back when thief was a class and rogue was a group of classes which encompassed both thief and bard).

Well that's when it comes to the question are you role playing or roll playing. If you are playing strictly to RoW then yeah that could technically happen. I'm pretty sure RoI and role playing would both fail to allow shit like that to happen. Especially since you can't quiet the bending of the wood no matter how skilled at being quiet you are.
