    Funny story,but when I took my daughter for an eye exam when she was little, the doctor was sooooo confused and then laughed hysterically. The eye chart with the letters on it? My daughter was saying the SOUNDS instead of the names of the letters. Apparently she'd never seen that happen before.

    Seriously, you are teaching kids in your community to read the same way i was taught to read, and now I get to tell my mom she's not weird. Phonic alphabet ONLY at home from the age I could pronounce the sounds - I didn't learn the actual alphabet until I got to preschool. By the time I was in kindergarten I was the most fluent reader in my class.

    This is the most profound concept on the internet today. Start correctly and simply. Most teachers and parents encourage memorization with the ABCs. The students can memorize hundreds of words and it looks like they're reading. But they don't understand the concept of reading. When they can really read, they can read tens of thousands of words. Start simply and don't move forward until it's crystal clear that your child is saying the letter sound and blending letters together and thus reading.😅

    Do we wait til the child has learned ALL the sounds prior to starting to blend...like the example you shared above "at"? Or can we teach some of the easy sounds then start blending to read? Wanting to make it easy for all, so wondering your recommendation . Thanks for these videos!!

    While teaching the letter sounds you can also teach to blend words. Do it as a game before you do it physically. Make the sounds out loud and see if they can figure out what word you are saying. Say make a noise like a c- a- t. Practice like that orally then when they have mastered those letter sounds and mastered hearing the blends orally tou can introduce the sounds written out. Word mastery, a reading program published in the early 1900s goes into the details explaining how to do this step by step. It's free to access online, and pretty much goes through the same things he is here.

    My baby is reading at 2 as well, & how did I find out, well it’s a funny story. We had flash cards that she was gifted for her 2nd birthday that had (2,3,4, & 5 letter words) & she went into her toy box & pulled out the box so we could play with them. As she attempted to hand them to me, the box opened & flash cards went everywhere. Trying not to scold her, I said UH OH, come on, let’s help mommy clean up, & she started handing me cards. ALL OF A SUDDEN, she starts sounding out words & SHE SAYS, mama, CAT C-A-T, BOX B-O-X, MAD M-A-D, I was shocked. I wasn’t trying to teach her to read, at all at this point, BUT, I did make it a point to go over the sounds of all the letters, everyday, as I saw many videos that said, it would help develop their reading skills. I was like LOOK AT YOU, smart girl. GOOD JOB! Her smile was everything 🥰❤️😍. Let me tell you, we are now at 4 & 5 letter words at this point & she’s not even 2.5 yet. LEARNING THE SOUNDS WORKS! This man is speaking truth!

    How did you teach your kid to read the word island? We don’t teach the alphabet to teach reading, we teach it because music is (probably) the oldest way humans have to memorize lists of things. It connects the concept to the shape. The sounds come later, after identifying the letter isn’t a difficult task. You did the same thing, just differently. Which, cool, it’s your kid and you do you, but I don’t think getting rid of the alphabet song is the only way.

    It is important to know the letters, so if they have a foundation built on knowing the sounds first then it shouldn't be a problem if they learn them at school. Continued practice and exposure to the sounds is a good idea though.

  • @cerebrummaximus3762

    @cerebrummaximus3762

    Yeah, that's a problem I thought with this approach. Society is built on the letter names. "Ey, bee, see, dee, ee, eff". If you go to an optician, for example, they are going to ask you by letter name. Though you might be slow to and the letter names may come harder to mind, you can teach the letter names to yourself as an adult. But if a young child goes to school and everything will be asked by letter names, and suddenly will have to recite the alphabet, because alas that is the approach schools go by, the child would be shocked if taught differently.
