I took a three month sabbatical from work. I wish I had taken a sabbatical from everything else because my family still managed to stress me the hell out. I will say, for those of you who are planning a career break, make sure your boundaries are very clear for everyone in your life, otherwise you'll be replacing one stress with another. Love this channel and this is a great conversation.

Resigned from my career of 25 years as a fashion stylist for HSN. I was physically and mentally tired. After taking care of my mom & watching her pass I did a bit of reflecting on my life. Now I'm a new business owner as a mobile massage therapist & other gigs. I love my new life. Learning how to manage my life on my terms. Love your channel ❤️

I left my job 5 months ago and it has honestly taken me this long to decompress from that stress. I didn’t have the money or the retirement but somehow we’re making it work. You have to determine what you’re willing to trade for your health and sanity. I realized that I value my life more than I value the stupid job, making someone else rich. I originally wanted to travel but then I realized that I just like the peace of not having to go in to work for corporate America. I will eventually find me another job but it will be on my terms.

Many blessings and well wishes to you! I quit a month ago-I was a patient access service manager in the ER. The burn out and stress was starting to effect and affect my clarity and multi tasking ability. Sadly, I continued on because my body was physically able to take the trauma. Then, my body and spirit started to break down. Indeed, it is absolutely draining to constantly pour into and uplift others, while never having anybody do the same for you. I understand completely where you are coming from.

It wasn’t out of the country but I decided to move out of my home state without knowing what was next, meaning I had No job, no place to live no solid plan. I sold most of my things and left with what I could fit in my car. It was only 4 mos and I was back to work but with a different outlook on how life would work. I kept asking myself why can’t I just do this 9-5 and be satisfied but now I know it was that move that changed me. Thank you for all the information you provide! "I learned I'm not a person who valued hard work." I feel that! I've been on a career break since Feb and it's now June. I haven't been traveling yet (your channel has been inspiring me to make it happen), but I finally got my very first passport during this break, which I'm so excited about!! I needed to hit the Pause button and it's been sooo refreshing & restorative. Currently, I feel ready to get back to work for income to support me while growing a new business that I started during this break as a life coach (something I can do remotely) and to finally travel abroad as I choose, but I'm coming to a job at this point with a whole different mindset. Ease is my new life purpose; it must run through everything I do. "Putting work in her place!"

Hi Stephanie, This discussion is right on time. ( long comment) I took a career break from trucking in October, '21. I didn't really plan to extend the break for so long. I've actually experienced some life changes, I.e. abandoning the strongly entrenched indoctrination of religion, the limiting beliefs of who I'm suppose to be ( influence of society, including our black community, family, workplace, friends, and religion) I was shunned by many (including close family members and long friends) because I decided for myself what was best for me and let go of what was not serving me or my best interest. I've been trucking (18 wheeler) for 8 years. I got tired of the demand on my time. Although I started my transportation business 11/2015, I still found I was trading valuable time for money. I was not enjoying my life and felt like I was living a fake life. I am All about BEING Happy and doing what my heart desires. I bought a van in August. I started living in it fulltime in October. I've been learning so much about myself including tapping into my intuition and learned to trust it. I just came off of a unplanned short roadtrip. I ended up at a Nature Park and camped in my Van on the campgrounds solo for the 1st time. I built my 1st wood fire, cooked, did a couple lives on Social media, journaling, visualization, nature walks, meditated, reflected. Waking up in nature to birds singing, chirping, squirrels clucking through trees, crisp air, rain was beyond Wonderful. I've exhausted the money I had and have no contract. I've been living/driving for Doordash and other means of income. On a holistic level I'm creating alchemy, transforming and healing into the person I truly Am. I am a free spirit who just can no longer conform to societies expectations and rules. My journey continues, but I'm determined not to go back to the old me. I'm free and the Creator & the Universe is taking care of me as I gradually but assuredly decide what and when my next move is. Thanks for providing the space for me and other Black women to share their experience of exercing autonomy and choosing themselves journey. 💚🙌🏾

@@sharjb2271 after the sabbatical I returned to working full time, but I work remote two days a week which gives me extended weekends and in office 3 days a week. My new gig is far less stressful than the old Job that was 40+ hrs in office, 45 minute community each way and being tethered to my phone and lap top as a “salaried” slave. I have it so much easier now and my sabbatical no doubt attracted this job.

In 2018, I left my day job in property management to finish my degree(after my request for a modified schedule was denied) and return to a career in fashion design and art. It was the most liberating and cathartic time in my adult life. Unfortunately, the pandemic wrecked havoc on my plans and finances and I reluctantly went back to my old company. I've been back in the work force for a little over a year and I feel all of the symptoms of a burnout coming on. My new goal is to save as much money as I can and leave the job next year - hopefully for good this time. 🙏🏾 🤞🏾

Interesting about sleep in problem solving. I can attest that one of my last finals way back in grad school - it was Finance the subject I hated LOL - I looked at that final and it was only 1 question with explanation and a spread sheet. I cried, I couldn’t figure it out - I cried “I’m not smart enough”. I laid down and 40 minutes later popped up with the answer turned it in several hours late (then tend not to care in grad school) and I got an A on the final and an A in the class.

This is so right. People do not allow for the Spirit of things to take the lead so we can discover new things about ourselves as human beings. We are too stuck in protocol/tradition. I think it's also why we are not falling in love and going through divorce. Most people are afraid to do things differently.

I resigned from my job in January 2022 (it was a bday gift to myself:) I was severely overwhelmed and stressed. This time has not been easy peasy but I'm grateful for the opportunity to hear myself think, spend more time with my teenage daughter and smell the roses. Due to the demands of my job, I was not able to travel as much as I wanted to but have made it my business to get a few trips in and I'm planning to attend my college homecoming for the first time this year. I love this new flexibility and don't think I can ever go back to a 9-5.

I get where you're coming from, however i think she meant looking for an easy way to live and not the hussle and buzzle of living up to the Jones's. We are humans and get influenced by other people. Always thinking we are 'behind' or underachievers etc. The dark side of it is that it makes you ill, physically and mentaly. So we can 'cheat' our way out of it all and live easier and happier. Leisure is luxury, babes. Good luck!

I refuse ro kill myself for a paycheck. I still believe in black excellence. For me it doesn't mean working to the bones. It means achieving what you want to achieve and showing other black people that if they want to do it, it is possible. I personally let my family and those I used to supervise know that personal and family time is essential. Don't make black excellence into something bad. That and consumerism are not in the same bucket.
