I've Bought An Electric Car For Less Than £5k!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Batteries only last 3 years! Or maybe it's 5 years? Perhaps 7! I get told this every day of the week.
Considering electric cars currently start between £4k to £5k on the used market for the oldest examples, can I find one that's got the same range as it did when it was new?

Dynamic Nav was the middle trim. Signature was top of the range, and there was one below I forgot. The warranty is about 320 quid a year, but you have to keep it in place - if it expires then you can't add it back on again. If you join the RZOC, which casts 15 quid, you get 30 quid off. Did you take a bluetooth dongle with you and use CanZE to find out what the battery Soh?

What a bargain, it looks quite nice and I’m sure with that warranty you’ve won’t have a problem. I had a Zoe 22kWh and loved it. I can already see from just the partial view you show that they still look very good. I took mine from 23000 miles to about 55000 and could not detect any degradation, so my guess is that you will average 85 miles and might see as much as 100. I think the most I ever saw unless I had reset it was 102 miles. Mine was the 'Q' motor so would charge at 43kW A/C. You suggested that yours wouldn't rapid charge so I guess it's the 'R' motor which can do 22kW and is supposed to be more efficient. I look forward to the next installment.

I have just purchased my first EV last week. It's a 2016 Nissan Leaf Tekna 30KW with 37k on the clock and it is immaculate. Driving it like Miss Daisy gets 103 miles, normal driving 93! Car was advertised for 6.5k, but managed to snap it up for 5.5k. Battery manager already updated and the last elderly owner (5 years) has had parking sensors fitted front and rear. The seller has been told she can't drive due to an eye problem and just wanted it gone. Between 2021-22 it did zero miles between MOTs! I could not be happier with my first EV.......so far.

In Feb 2016 I bought a 2012 Citröen C-Zero for £6k and drove it home to Bournemouth from Cambridge. First time using the Ecotricity charge network as this was all that was available on the motorway. Long story short I made it home. I had the car for nearly 5 years and traded it in for £5k and it only needed new tyres in that time. It’s range was 60 miles in the summer and 45 miles in the winter so long as you didn’t put the heater on. That didn’t change when I traded it in. It was a great 2nd car for my wife who used it every day 8miles each way to her office. It also made very little difference to our electricity bill. I think I'm leaning more towards the lease, especially on a used car. The leased batteries come with a guarantee of capacity and so can be replaced by the manufacturer if they fall lower than that, and if you think about it the previous owner has taken the majority of the risk on that. If you pay 3 months of battery lease at like £50 a month then realise the range has dropped to below 75%. £150 for a brand spanking new battery replacement is well cheap.

A work colleague of mine has a similar Zoe, again battery owned, picked up used on a very cheap PCP so he could try an EV out and then a silly low end payment so he's kept it. Only extra expense is keeping the extended warranty going which is well worth it given some of the repairs he's had would have probably not been economic given the value of the car.

@@KillerBill1953 Electric cars are heavier, which results in extra friction with the road, but the regenerative braking system found on EVs negates the need for friction brakes to be applied as often, therefore reducing particulate matter from brakes compared to ICE cars. There is a huge market in EV battery re-cycling. Samsung, Walmart, and Apple have signed the Responsible Mineral Initiative (RMI), which aims to set standards that would clean up the cobalt supply chain. Tesla are making their cathode cobalt free and changing to cleaner cheaper formulas. BMW made a deal with Swedish battery company, Northvolt, which sources its cobalt only from Australian and Moroccan mines to eliminate child miners from their supply chain. In 2023, LG and General Motors are expected to begin production of their latest battery called "Ultium," which is said to contain 70% less cobalt. Every part of your modern life uses batteries. So your assertion that it is only EV owners who are virtue signalling is mis-guided at best. At worst you have been told to be angry about new technology because you find it difficult to let go of old ways of thinking. And this is without any mention of the untold horrendous damage that oil companies and oil production has caused to millions of peoples lives and the natural environment.

I travelled 160 miles to Skoda Winner garage in Gloucester from Doncaster to get my Skoda Fabia Estate. I wanted a certain colour with a certain mileage and different things that fit my budget. People thought I was mad but if you want something hand picked you can't just be looking in a 50 mile radius like you said. It was 2h 50 minutes one way😂

Do you think the new rules for chargers will kill off 22kW standalone posts? IIRC anything 8kW+ will need contactless - I can see the 3 phase posts being restricted to single phase leaving the only 22kW options being on Rapids

In Norway there are plenty in that price range (although they are going to be something like an early leaf, a MiEV, or maybe a first gen e-up), 10k gets you a lot more options. You can't get a usable ICE car for 5k either :)

@@Markcain268much more expensive to run though if you can charge at home. Based on £40ish a week in fuel for me to commute in my old Fiesta compared to around £4 a week in charging for the EV I have now. Fuel for the year costs £1800 or so more so the £5k EV pays for itself within 3 years before even mentioning servicing costs based on my experience of similar sized ICE and electric cars. I also don’t spend all my time charging because I rarely even need to use a public charger and don’t lose any time in my week putting fuel in saving me 5-10 minutes per week not including travel time if I had to go out of my way to a fuel station.

@@christopherhuggins5167 id have to pay off loan installments for a few years to pay for a used ev and repayments would definitely be more than the £50 a month fuel i use, insurance is a few hundred more too, by the time i break even the battery will most likely need replacing at a cost i can't afford which means another loan and back on the repayments again and all for some dull, bland shopping car that i would resent paying insurance for every year!

The advantage of buying an EV vs petrol/diesel is you get years of "1/8th price fuel" (octopus night time at about 7.5p = 2p/mile vs 16p mile for petrol) and they have almost zero maintenance.

Indeed. If you are able to stick to home charging most of the time, then yes, massive savings over buying petrol are there to be had.... The occasional times you may get shafted using public charging, are more than compensated for by the savings 90% of the remaining time.

@@Brian-om2hheven then I found it's not actually that bad compared to what my old car did. I worked out with the current ridiculous fuel prices I was paying about 22p per mile. Unless I'm paying 75p per KWH I'm not getting near that (75p could land me in the range of 23p-24p per mile) but on average it's 2p per mile using October Intelligent before that on my standard Electric before I got the Smart meter it was still only about 9p per mile and that's classed as crazy for home charging haha. All these EV nah sayers who spout rubbish like "it's as expensive to charge an EV and to fill with petrol" have got their heads up some orifice and are just cherry picking the worst thing whilst picking the best for the ICE car. Honestly I laughed when he said they wanted a car that had not lost range like an ICE wouldn't lose range as it got tired. Everything is less efficient when it's older.

Even below trade money that. Seller must not have known, even a quick look on motorway would have returned considerably more than that. I went from a leaf to the Zoe. Zoe was very cheaply made, windscreen leaked, air con was knackered and got fed up of knocking my elbows off the cheap plastic door cards. On the plus side it was easy to drive, I got decent mpkw and had it a year and got my money back. I think your a/c will be an expensive one but around £6,000 all in with no lease it’s good
