It’s criminal what they take away considering what you paid for this device. I can understand taking away the classes, and “personal trainer”. But HR Monitor, settings, rep counter, exercises with form demo. All that is tacky, pure tacky, and the sole reason I will not buy one.

I have tonal for 2 months now my subscription is increasing to 60. People's biggest complaint was the high monthly subscription so what the company did was increase the monthly fee. I will relay this to all my friends who had an interest in this.

Someone should start a business to jailbreak all of these connected fitness devices that are going to go bankrupt. One could probably make a lot of money providing content to machines that are otherwise useless.

I went 2 years with a subscription, and then moved to no subscription. I still love it. I know how to target muscles and use my tonal, I do not need a virtual coach to show me how to move the arms or how to do the workout. Someone should make an app that helps users without a subscription track info, log workouts, etc. Someone should also learn how to modify, unlock, or jailbreak a tonal machine.

That is a good point that you can use the subscription (forced for first year anyways) to learn what you need, and then go manual after that. I struggle because some basic functionality like lift modes and exercise settings are lost, but you can do it and still enjoy it.

Honestly the subscription taking away literally everything but the most basic of functionality is making me think against this. Them REQUIRING the 1 year extra subscription and it not even being part of the total at checkout feels criminal. $5000 total for the tonal with the $500 smart accessories after a $250 Labor Day coupon. But then you got the $60 a month forced subscription for a year so that’s $720+tax. So REALLY it’s $6000 or like $144 a month. Oh and if you have spotty internet then you can’t even do the basic lift because even that requires an internet connection. So technically it’s like $200 a month because you NEED internet. Like come on man just let me buy a machine, have it work, then offer like trainer videos and extra workouts on a subscription plan.

It bums me out, as it is great, but I can't spend 60 a month to keep it active (I am always testing other products so a huge waste of money). Also, the Speediance has quickly become a quality replacement.

For me the only perk of a home gym is no subscription fee. At 59/mo I can get a membership at my neighborhood gym. What a bummer, I demoed this machine and loved it but the subscription fee is an absolute deal breaker. The price alone is equal to a 6yr gym membership.

I get it. A lot of people have shared this exact same sentiment.

Now it's 60 bucks a month. I've had mine for 2 months and really enjoy it and have many friends asking if it is worth it. It is but not if they are going to keep increasing fees. This is bs and should go lower. I will be honest with my friends to look at other options. I feel like tonal will keep squeezing. I will finish off my year membership and end it. People complained about high monthly membership cost and I guess their solution was to increase it more.

Its definitely going to keep going up if theres not enough cancellations. I would just get a weight pin stack functional trainer instead. I cant believe people pay so much for this equipment, and still pay a subscription. Like working out at home, but still paying tonal for a gym membership lol

We realize you might be biased. It’s ok. It’s your goal, it’s fine. But increasing 20% monthly rate is ridiculous. As the demand increases, the price should lower. They I guess didn’t get that. Too bad many will stop their subscriptions and ultimately will bring revenue down. Listen, I’m not complaining about how expensive this is. I would pay for it, but work ethics with tonal is what’s wrong and unfortunately I don’t go by that as I am sure many people won’t either.

I have a Tonal machine at home for 3 years now. My honest advice to you: save your money. Not just the machine is expensive, but the $59 monthly subscription price is ridiculous. And don’t be surprised if it goes up again. Also, some machine parts will eventually get damage, and some noisy after the wear and tear. If you’re out of warranty be ready to cover maintenance expenses. Too much hassle, and I hate overpriced products and services.

Reminds me of a timeshare maintenance fees - they can increase it at any time and you’re on the hook. But at least you can still use it even without the subscription even if some conveniences are no longer available.

You should do a video of the Aviron with no membership. Aviron says it wouldn’t be so bad. But I wouldn’t risk trying it out.

When you factor in the 4k price tag and / or 60 dolars a month membership, you can pay for a real gym membership for 4-7 years before you reach the initial cost of the Tonal. Then when you factor in membership for the Tonal, you'll have paid enough money in five years to buy a second Tonal machine.

As someone in IT it’s infuriating to have a company require a sub after paying for hardware. I will never buy this with this model, to fund some c level

I just got mine. It’s a very nice machine but considering returning just because of the subscription setup. I thought I was going to be ok with paying the monthly fee, but their programs don’t really align with my needs. I like to customize my own workouts and for that, doesn’t make sense to pay $60 a month. Nice machine, but subscriptions should be tiered.

I have a tonal and I refuse to pay the hostage fee. The tonal is a great machine, however I tell anyone to NOT buy a tonal unless you like pay 59 today and probably 69 next year, etc etc. the machine is NOT worth it when basically everything is stripped. IF they simple left the custom workouts without the data analytics at a much MUCH lower cost then I the machine would be useful and I would not feel like tonal stole thousands of dollars from me. What makes me the most upset about the recent increase, just happened to coincide with all these celebrity endorsements and commercials… which I’m sure needed to be paid well….

Don't blame you one bit for feeling this way. I love the Tonal but I am honestly thinking about selling it after getting the Speediance. Not sure what I will do, but I can't pay that monthly fee on the regular. I hear you on the price increase timing related to endorsements.

I can easily afford one, and im in the market for one. If the machine was free i might consider a membership. In no world is that thing worth $3500 + $50/mo indefinitely

Thank you Gani. Multiple people are supported. (Pretty sure it is unlimited subscriptions) They also have partner workouts if you would enjoy that.

Do you think it would be possible to use tonal with the peloton guide!! I would love input on that! I've been doing peloton strength classes but using free lift on tonal so I can lift heavier for some moves.. :) Thanks!

It might be a little hard to make the two flow, but if your room is situated right, I bet you could make it work. Specially if you know your way around the Tonal and how to setup for different exercises. Once the Guide tells you what exercise you are doing, pause it and setup the Tonal, then resume. Best of both worlds!

The fact that they disable stuff that costs them $0 to include really upsets me. It would be great if we could pay significantly less (maybe $10 a month) to get back the weight modes and custom workouts, but no personalized training videos and such that cost them money to make.

The IT guy in me has to point out that it does not cost them 0 dollars to include that. Development teams, testing teams, cloud hosting... there are costs. But nothing or 60 a month really pushes many away from this product. They could probably afford to keep a few more base features in for free or at a minimum, have a non-personal trainer mode that is a fraction of the cost but still keeps a lot of functionality.

@@Learnwithtravis you have to pay almost $4000 to buy the machine, and it's not $4k of hardware, plus you have to get a year of the subscription up front. So that all is paid for in your purchase. Nothing I mentioned requires any kind of server querying, its all local and could easily be done offline. So it costs them $0 to keep it included after initial purchase.

@@Learnwithtravis to be clear I'm talking about just the Weight modes, and making/saving our own custom workouts. That should be a base part of the original price. The music, videos, etc is understandable to be a subscription (although still not $60)

The thing is a brick without internet connection(literally won’t work)

I guess I’m a cheapskate. I demoed the machine and liked it, but push-ups, pull-ups and abs at home for free plus $10 a month at Planet Fitness runs me about $150 per year. $4,500 all in for the machine + $720 for a 1 year subscription = $5,200. $5200/150 = 34.5 years. I’ll pass.

I was interested in Tonal but no longer. I am looking seriously at the Speediance Home Gym. It does everything the tonal does and more and subscription is free for the next year and then will be like $29 per month

Tonal machine is like the gym membership but no equity. The gym you pay and pay and pay forever. The subscription is almost like the personal trainer. IDK what the current rate for a trainer but if if is $50 for an hour, then to have access to the Tonal Trainer for a month for $60 sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Overall if you could go into your gym and pay $5000 for lifetime membership it might be comparable. The personal trainer will never be able to get you the deal of a one time fee.

I like that way of looking at it. I think the one problem a lot of people run into is they are forced to pay for the "personal trainer" on the Tonal even though they don't want that experience. They want the machine and features but don't need a trainer to guide them and tell them what to do but they still need to pay for it.

@@Learnwithtravis while there may be some people that don’t need a trainer, the actual time to do the program needs to be considered. Also if you don’t know how to program, what are the chances you injure yourself? It’s like the doctor who operates on himself. Very likely to screw up something. All it takes is one little thing and you tear up some thing. Better off paying $720 for the first year. How much is knee replacement due to self inflicted coaching? Or shoulder, or hip?

​@@Tuberted You're assuming that the buyer is a beginner. Many fairly advanced people will want the machine but have more knowledge than the trainers. The deplorable aspect of Tonal's business strategy is that they disable features of the machine itself, if you refuse to keep paying for the training. For example they disable "spotter mode" which is a basic safety feature. This would be like going to a gym where the personal trainers walk around removing your spotter bars unless you pay for private training sessions.

Valid point as well. It does bother that they don’t include what seems like very basic or even safety level features.

It makes no sense to me that anyone would buy this machine when there are other options like Speediance that offers something very similar without the membership fee. I don’t see Tonal staying in business. There is too much good competition that isn’t priced ridiculously.

Makes you wonder what Tonal will do. When they were the only option out there they could charge what they wanted. With competition you would think they would need to make themselves more available.

You lose the spotter?!? Which is a safety feature. Someone could get injured because they didn’t pay for a software feature just seems very ethically wrong.

I agree that it sounds like a safety feature but on the Tonal it really is not. The Tonal is very safe without spotter. I think this is because it because it never pulls resistance through the range you were using for the exercise. Not defending the Tonal, but clarifying this specific situation. Spotter is more of a feature to get the most out of your lift so you can keep going instead of stopping because your muscles are done.

I don’t have a tonal, but how would it be superior to say performing body weight movements ?

I don't think I would say superior as I really enjoy free weights, and if you use them correctly you can achieve all sorts of personal goals. Some of the things that Tonal does stand out compared to free weights are 1) Takes up so little space yet does so much 2) consistent resistance, hard to swing or cheat. Challenges you through the whole motion 3) Special lift modes - these change on the fly and help to maximize the quality of lift and push through fatigue 4) because of these modes (spotter) you can push hard even when on your own (where you would need a spotter for some free weight options) Hope that hekps!

Get a speedience gym monster. Does everything with no subscription. Right now at least. Plus much cheaper. Absolutely love mine!

You can still do everything which means putting arms in all locations and setting the weight to whatever you want. But, you lose all the software enhancements. Resistance settings, smart modes, tracking, exercise selection screen, and demonstrations. Most of it I can do without but a few things really take the experience down a few notches.

I went back to a gym and went to use my Tonal after canceling my subscription and it has totally locked me out. I did use it once before after canceling and I was able to use the minimum functions of my custom workouts. Does anyone know a workaround or perhaps another way I can at least use the unit without the subscription after paying so much for it?

As a FYI my goal is to be as unbiased as possible. I have said many times that I think the Tonal is an awesome machine, but the subscription price is too much. They increased the price shortly after this video was released and I made a video about that.

If I had the money to throw away, I'd almost just want to buy the machine and never connect it to the internet.

I spent $1,000 on a complete home gym and I’m satisfied. Tonal is cool tho I guess.
