Tonal Smart Home Gym Review: The TRUTH After 6 Months

The monthly fee is a huge draw back. They should of done it by pre-loading a library of workouts and then giving you options to pay for new workouts, enroll with trainers for a customized plan, live group classes etc.. There are so many options available for them to generate recurring revenue without making people feel like they are forced to pay $50 a month just to use the thing they already paid thousands for.

agreed, Yevgeniy. hopefully we'll see a competitor come into the market and severely undercut them. Right now they can get away with it being the only one in town. I would love to see some open-source DIYer create this thing. I am most intrigued by the application of AI/ML to adjust resistance in real time and using this with eccentrics/negatives.

Something to note - I believe that you actually are only required to pay the subscription for the first year. You don't need it after that, and you can create your own workout plans to follow on the device. It's actually really easy to create them too, you can program in supersets, rest periods, etc.

This actually looks AMAZING and I went to go buy one right now even though the price tag was $3,000 but then I saw it requires a $50/month membership and I immediately stopped. No thanks. That was a deal breaker for me. Sure, if you don't get the membership you're able to still use the machine to do exercises but it doesn't allow you to do any of the smart features like logging your workouts or viewing the video exercise demos. This machine is a self contained computer that's isolated from the rest of the world and it doesn't even require internet access, so why would anyone pay a monthly fee for it? If it were a live webcam workout like Pelaton then ok sure a membership fee makes sense. But this is like buying a Dell PC without internet access and paying Dell each month to use the computer that you already paid full price for. I feel like we as consumers should NOT support corporate greedy tactics like these. If we do, we won't actually "own" anything in the future. Need to wash your clothes? Gotta pay $25/mo for your washer and dryer. Want to do dishes? Gotta pay $35/mo for your dish washer. You get the idea...

Hi Coop. Just want to thank you for this review. You heavily influenced our decision to purchase a Tonal, which we received in mid-April (2022). We converted our den/library into a home office/gym and added the Tonal, a Sole F85 treadmill, and a set of 5-25 lb. dumbbells (for my wife only). So far, I could not be happier with our Tonal. I had done zero resistance training since we stopped going to our local gym at the outset of the pandemic in March 2020 (i.e., over two years). However, as of this posting (early Aug. 2022) I've completed 98 Tonal workouts over 17 consecutive weeks (including 22 of the last 30 days) for a total of just under 300,000 lbs., comprised of 165 (of 245 possible) different movements/exercises. In addition, I've increased my strength score by 43.4%, which is well ahead of my initial goal of achieving a 50% improvement by mid-October (i.e., 6 months). I haven't felt (or looked) like this since the summer of '94 when I was 33yo. Lastly (and, again, mostly for my wife), we also took your advice and ordered a white Rep AB-4100 bench to replace the Tonal bench (should be arriving soon). I genuinely respect and appreciate that you were able to be open-minded and honest about the value of Tonal given that it is so different from nearly all of the other equipment you've reviewed.

I’ve had my Tonal for about a year and love it. The subscription cost is a negative, especially since I don’t use any of the trainers (I suffered a severe ankle injury so I had to design my own workouts to accommodate that). But it’s solidly built, takes up very little space, and looks good in my home gym. The white glove installation is great if you live in the US, but I recently moved to Mexico and they obviously don’t offer it down here. No worries, I thought, I’d just call Tonal, explain my situation and ask them to send me the instructions. No dice. They absolutely refused to do it. So their customer service is definitely crap. Fortunately, after a deep dive on the InterWebs, I managed to find a copy of the installation manual posted by a former Tonal installer. It took two guys to install it, but anyone who can operate a tape measure, drill and screwdriver can do it.

Throwing this out there, I never received my tonal. The entire process was a nightmare. Delivery was scheduled several times, I'd wait around all day and they wouldn't show. The support team at Tonal has little to no idea what's going on. My tonal ended up getting shipped to Boston, I live in Colorado. They then rescheduled it, after waiting for months, for it to arrive on Christmas eve. I let tonal know that after waiting around all day, no one showed AGAIN. On Christmas Eve! They had no idea until I made them aware. Seems like a nice piece of equipment but not worth the headache.

I think this thing would be awesome in place of a traditional cable machine. The biggest turnoff I see is the subscription. This was a factor when I was looking at treadmills. Really liked the Norditrac but ended up buying a Sole because I didn't want something that had features tied to a subscription. That is the whole point of a home gym, convenience and only having to pay once.

I sort of agree HOWEVER if they can use the subscription cost to subsidize the cost of the equipment then that's very much worth it and it will truly be the "netflix for training". Imagine it costs $150 to install then only $20 a month. I don't know a single gym in a big city with that low of a price-point especially if you're looking for personalized training or virtual glasses also offering gamification.

Coop forgot to mention that the accessories (that you need to use the damn thing) are not included. All of the attachments and the bench cost $500. And if you want to just use cable attachments you already have, you still have to buy their proprietary adapters to make them attach. So base cost for the Tonal, attachments, and the REQUIRED 12 month subscription, is $4100, not including shipping and tax.

I'm not sold on it being a good option for a home gym. I think cardio based equipment like treadmills and bikes are far more prolific in homes than strength training equipment which is why Peloton is such a success; although, if you rent and are moving every year or two it could be good supplement to a gym membership.

I just got mine. I will say. The magnetic weights are completely different than anything free weight. The eccentric mode on Tonal hands down kicks ass. Not only that, it makes you really do each rep the right way without cheating or being able to use momentum to get that peak squeeze in. I also realize why it would be difficult to do live classes. It’s because having to adjust the handles and various straps can be time consuming which then can throw you off from what the instructor might be asking you to do next. That’s one of the biggest learning curves. Making the proper adjustments on the pullys to go from one movement to another. Overall however, my impressions are this is a badass system. You can’t help but follow the instructions and the weights, range of motion, ability to do the movements with proper form are great.

In 1974 or 1975 my Dad brought home a used "Dan Lurie" weight set. My brother and I used it a bit but soon forgot about it and moved on. About 25 years later I wanted to get in shape, and I pulled that weight set out of his basement, cleaned off the rust, and used it as the beginning of the equipment I have now. Fast forward another 15 years plus, and I still use those plates in most of my workouts. When I am gone, my sons will get them, and at some point, maybe 25 years later, they will use them. And all of it will work just fine. The past, present, and future of home workouts is iron.

I can see this for someone that prefers working out at home and simply doesn't have the space for a traditional home gym. The upfront cost plus fees are killing these as a replacement for traditional home gyms. With my home gym, I buy more equipment as needed. For about a year, my home gym consisted of a barbell and some plates. As I could afford more and got stronger, I added to my gym.

If I had to guess, the resistance is being provided with some form of electric motor. Current is being applied to the motor to generate some level of holding torque, and the user is overcoming that torque and essentially back driving the motor. So yeah, Coop was right in assuming “magnets”, since a major component of electric motors is a rotor constructed of magnets.

I'm really considering buying this because I need an effective home gym that I can put in an upstairs spare bedroom that I'm turning into a home gym. I need something that's not super heavy seeing as though it's going upstairs in my house. I think a Tonal, a rower and some dumbbells would be effective for me.

Excellent review Coop! But please let people know they CRIPPLE this machine when you cancel the $50 subscription! All those features you loved are stripped away: the adaptive weight modes like "chains", the workout and rep tracking, even the basic exercise guidance, and of course the training videos--all gone. There's a guy on YT who made a video detailing this. This tactic is damn near criminal for a machine that costs ~$4600(!!!) after tax, mandatory install, and mandatory first year subscription. They will sell more of these than they should because most people don't know you will never truly OWN a functional Tonal.

I'd pay 50% more than MSRP on this thing if it was made to last and I could own it outright, but they gotta price it low enough to get suckers who don't research, folks with less disposable cash in the door, then squeeze em with the fees until the unit breaks. Then they sell em the "Tonal v2".

A great idea overall. But I would never use 99% of the software regarding the virtual trainers. They should make one without all the extra trainer software. Simply the machine and your own fitness program. I love the form factor and the fact the machine tracks your strength and indeed the strength curve of the actual movement. Give me that at about half the price and I would buy one.

This reminds me of Peloton. If you’re a serious athlete you don’t use Peloton, you use Zwift. While this may be the best solution for the average person, I think a lot of us would need the ability to choose our own adventure. Like you said, competition’s against each other, the ability to program our own workouts, even join a club. Literally the weight lifters version of Zwift. Also have you ever tried the Keiser air compression systems? Probably the best cable system I’ve ever used. I could see something like that working well with a wall unit. The really cool thing about those is that it gives you feedback on your velocity, which is a totally different modality.

I disagree...garage gyms aren't cheap. While they don't have to be expensive either, the primary draw is not having to share your stuff and not having to drive somewhere to workout. This would also free up a TON of space provided you could live with the "relatively" limited capabilities it has due to the form factor. My issue with it is primarily that electronic, subscription-based stuff tends to have built in obsolescence. The experience is so different looking than a traditional free-weight one that I'm not sure how easy it would be to center all my fitness routines on the Tonal. For that price, I wouldn't be able to justify to myself (or my wife) having both a bunch of free weights, various weight machines AND a Tonal. I bought myself a ForceUSA G9 Smith Machine rack-combo and I love it, but honestly I never would have thought I'd own something so expensive and certainly never imagined using, let alone owning a Smith Machine. And yet here I am, and it makes working out so much less of a hassle. I am easily hitting the weights twice as often and wasting less time simply because I can walk out into my garage and the setup is ready to go. I could see Tonal filling a similar need for the right kind of person. How many of these people exist right now is the big question.

It's greatly improved my performance for backpacking (15-- 20 mile daily hikes with a 30-lb pack for multiple days over multiple mountain passes) as well as road cycling. The programs are well-designed, with the option to replace moves if you have an injury or just want to switch something out. They add programs, one-off sessions, and new features so often that I can't keep up - well worth the subscription, which is far less than I've paid previous trainers. And I don't have to fit into anyone's training calendar - I can do this stuff anytime from my home.
