I Think These Snakes Were Feeding on Baby Trout

There were thick schools of baby trout all along the shoreline and I think these snakes that were all over were there for the all you can eat buffet.

This was cool, I have never seen this level of shore line snake activity! And yes, I used to watch Mutual of Omaha wild Kingdom all the time!

I loved that show as a kid! I think it was on Sunday nights. Those were the days when everyone watched a half dozen channels. That's all there was! I don't even think video tapes were a thing yet!

Yeah, I've seen that before as well. That was part of my reasoning on what I was seeing. There were swarms of baby trout all over the lake along every part of the shoreline as I walked around it. Tons of food for many critters.

Your Parents couldn't have been happy about that! That's funny. I used to have a small pond in my yard growing up as well. I'd bring home bluegill and bass as a kid and put them in there but the raccoons would always get them in the end.

There was a snake about every ten yard of shoreline. Most were swimming within 5 feet of the water's edge.

Amani, I've come across these guys and another type of water snake too fishing higher elevations of the San Juaquin river. Snakes of that size and smaller. Pure black w/yellow eyes. Strange little guys. They'd come in and outta the water next to me and hang around on the rocks while I was fishing. My buddy picked them up and they were pretty docile. He did get a warning bite, but definitely not poisonous. I didn't try it lol. Like you said, probably in the garter snake family. Cool video!

I usually see those black racer snakes with the yellow stripe but not this many, what I think were, sierra garter snakes. Anyway, there were a ton of them and they were on the prowl at the water's edge!

@@wildernesswithamani1027 Yeah, that was crazy. I think you're right, they were probably feasting on baby trout minnows.

I'm pretty sure that's what all of these snakes were doing because there were thick schools of baby trout all along the shoreline around the whole lake. I figure at some point the big trout come in to enjoy that feast.

In Verdi I caught a 1' garter snake and when I tossed it into the river a brown trout hit it straight away. They are prey until they get big.

Brown trout would be crushing those things. The big brown I got in the West Walker the day before when I was fishing for my Patreon would have swallowed this snake pretty quick.

And there was a lot of it for them. There were large swarms of baby trout everywhere along the shoreline around the lake. I ordered some stuff I feel will look like them. I'm going back soon so we will see.

I have a feeling those baby trout are the major part of a lot of critter' diets out there. There were swarms of those little trout everywhere around the lake close to shore. I just ordered some long range casting stuff I think will emulate them. We'll see if it will work sooner rather than later.
