I grew up in Alaska woods w/o running water and I took my baths in glacier fed Rivers up to when they would start to freeze and they had snow on the banks. And in case your wondering, I took showers in the nurses office at school rest of the year. Cold is definitely a mental game and until you either choose (Or usually FORCED) to endure it, you don't realize that. Key is just knowing the threshold when your ACTUALLY in danger of frostbite/hypothermia ect. Once you understand that you can shut off that cold "pain" My judge has always been if my nose hairs freeze when I breathe in. If not, i'm fine and can be outside for Hours w/o a coat and be just fine. If nose hairs freezing, it's a ticking clock until I get frostbite and need to be careful. Great vid Will.

I have been using ice baths to help with recovery for about 15 years, started in Grade 12 doing it twice a week. When I was 26 I had a spinal injury that caused severe muscle tension in my upper back and long term inflammation to the ligaments along the spine (4 ligaments were partially torn) I spent 3 months doing 1-2 ice baths per day. The effects were incredible as it would always remove about 80% of the inflammation, and the mental benefits of challenging myself every day was amazing. 2 interesting takeaways from that 3 month stint, and why I went back to twice a week: 1 - your body adapts to it quickly. Granted i was used to the ice baths from years of doing 2x a week, but doing it every day i found that my initial fight or flight response upon entering got shorter and shorter, to the point it stopped almost all together, at which point I could have stayed in as long as I wanted, and would make sure I exited before I did too much. I even experimented with meditating while in the ice bath. Cant speak much to that as i stopped doing every day shortly after this experiment. 2 - why did i go back to 2x a week? Simply because while my body adapted to the water, it also became RELIANT on it. My body got worse and worse at dealing with the inflammation on its own, and I would be craving an ice bath like it was a drug by the end. Going back to 2x a week balanced this out much better where now my inflammation is very well managed. That is a shory summary of my experience, i hope it helps or offers some insight to anyone looking to try it. For context I work as an athletic performance and sport performance coach, and i have "prescribed" this method of approach to several clients where it was appropriate!

@@jaredderkatz3534 For a beginner, would you recommend filling up a tub just the coldest water setting, or that + throwing a bunch of ice cubes in it?
@jaredderkatz3534
8 күн бұрын
@@HiCARTIER ideally I recommend people buy a cheap waterproof thermometer and try to get the water between 10-15 Celsius. Sounds warm but 13-15 is a good place to start out. If that's not an option then yeah that's the simplest way to do it.
I freaking love and admire how willing you are to try wild stuff like this and be so present and honest in it. Thank you!

Thank you so much for the last like 30 seconds about fear and comfort zone! That really was, what I had to hear today. Comfort really is our biggest trap and getting out is so hard but it helps knowing that we all have similar struggels in a way!
Wow! This puts a whole new perspective on everyday challenges. Awesome and thank you for sharing!

God damn consistent Bangers from this man!!!
This is exactly what I needed to see hungover! I don't drink often and this reminded me that I would genuinely enjoy doing something like this over going out drinking. I started doing cold exposure showers everyday around a year ago and it really helped with my mental health and mood but I fell out of the habit when I moved 6 months ago. Thanks for inspiring me to get back on it!

One of the most helpful videos for everyone to give a try. Just thinking of cold and going out to brave it and not run away lowers your BP. It boosts nitric oxide production. That drop in your stomach from a roller coaster is a similar feeling.. Send the blood to your head to think faster.
Great Video Will. Well done for the cold plunge.... Respect

It truly is mind-over-matter. I have suffered from moderate but disruptive migraines most of my life. Meds havnt helped much. Deep, metaphoric visualization of pain release has helped the most. Meditative euphoria is not always easy to obtain when you need to but, when you get to that 'plane' outside yourself, its amazingly effective.
This was awesome and very interesting! Thanks for doing it will! i want to conquer the cold as well!

My favorite episode yet Will! I remember doing the “Polar bear dip” when I was younger but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years now and unfortunately don’t have access to this type of cold exposure. So crazy to see what a little cold water can do🥶 Would love to see more cold exposure content in the future!
8 mins in and this is my favorite video you have made
man i love your videos
I ride motorcycles year round. I live in SC so the coldest it usually gets is 11F. I hear from too many riders that 40F is too cold to ride. So i challenged my self to see how long i can ride in 15F temperatures with no heated gear. Just wind proof padded gear and normal riding jeans. I made it to about 10 minutes at 60mph before i called it quits and put on some chaps and heated gloves i kept in my backpack. But the goal wasn't to just survive it. But to feel what "cold" actually meant on a ride. Ever since then my body has kind of leveled up from the brief experience and i haven't put on my winter under coat (for the jacket) since. I just get too hot. I still use heated gloves because freezing fingers on a motorcycle is far more dangerous than getting cold any where else. I guess the moral of the story is to test your limits.
You' might have just convinced me to go get a cold plunge! Sick video, nice to see people conquer their fears!
I love the lengths Will goes to make our days
