The old gym reminds me of my old high school gym back in the day. It was this small rusty gym with cage walls attached to the side of an equally old concrete basketball court. Most of the equipment were more than 20 years old and It was always surprising to me how they never broke despite being super rusty and shaky. I definitely enjoy the modern machines and other gym features that helps with convenience and isolation but fun-wise I definitely had way more fun in that small old gym. Something about utilizing the entire court like bleachers and etc. combined with old equipment to form different workouts was so enjoyable.

While I can certainly appreciate the nostalgia trip offered by the old gym, there are local/chain gyms (ex. XSport Fitness) that offer most of what the expensive gym offers (all brand new equipment from Hammer Strength, Life Fitness, Technogym, Hoist, Precor, etc.) for $30-40 per month. I would never go for a monthly membership at the oldest gym, but I would definitely pay the inflation-adjusted price for a daily trip back in time a few times a month or year, just to remind myself of how/where it all started. I don't get the hate on Technogym either. It's great stuff and integrates well into a "modern gym" for the "modern lifter." I believe you can even trick them out with LCD screens that keep track of the weight, rep count, rep tempo, etc. Same with Hoist, which I never encountered until they remodeled my current gym. Their machines are an entirely new thing IMO, especially the RS-1101 seated dip. Such a comfortable ROM.

I agree man, the gym I go to is literally inside a basement and all the plates are pure iron, there's like rubber on a few select workout machines but that's it. The place is so crappy and totally in need of repairs, I accidentally stepped on something I wasn't supposed to and it like my foot fell through into a water drain or something like that. The owner was cool so I didn't get charged. Anyway the main reason I go, aside from it being cheap as all hell, is that it's straightforward and it has a real sense of community, I know everyone who goes there and everyone who goes is chill and it's a consistent cast of guys every day who go there to workout, chat a bit, go home it's awesome. There's also a bakery that opened right by it that serves some of the worst treats ever but if you're an energy starved lifter, shitty pudding goes hard.

I like old and rusty gyms rather than new ones, I’ve come to find that effectively, smaller and cheap gyms are where people that really want to train go, and I love it, been training for 2 years now, almost 3, I started training at home to lose weight and now I am on volume, amazing trip this has been.

12:12 yeah TechnoGym looks cool and clean inside of the gym, but at the gym I work at, the issue is maintenance. TechnoGym is consistently the least durable brand at the gym. Parts are constantly having to be replaced and there is regular “preventive maintenance” for them. Personally, I prefer Hammer Strength anyways.

In my parents' little country town there is small gym that reeks 90s bodybuilding. The place is probably 1000 square feet with a 10-feet-high roof, an uneven floor and an insane amount of machines cramed into such a little space. To this day it's the best gym I've ever been to and the one where I made the most progress.

A 2 minute walk from my house there used to be woodstreet gym, that was just like the first gym in this vid. I loved that place I trained there from 15 to 19, no messing about not a treadmill in sight just massive old school weights and some monster strong dudes in there. All of which couldn't do enough to help you, I'd bench say 1 plate a side and they'd say we'll done give some tips and then do 3 a side for reps. I was sad to hear it when it closed.

I love both types of gyms. You never know what you're going to find that may bring you a new result. I love finding equipment that I've never used before. New gyms can be especially exciting for that reason. Old gyms can be cool like that too. You never know what lost in time miracle (or bullshit) equipment you'll find. I also love the gyms that are falling apart. They can be a great adventure in themselves. I used to go to a gashouse pit where I would check the squat rack for stability. If it wobbled too much, I brought in my toolbox and tightened all of the supports before I started lifting. They actually waived my gym dues for the last ten months they were open. They thought it was awesome that a member cared about their equipment that much. I went to another place where I always kept hex keys for the dumbbells, and after a while other members knew to come to me when they were loose. Places like that a lot of fun.

And I gained back 50 pounds bcoz I was craving a lot of shit after I lost all that weight without going to the gym. Btw I looked like a grandma with saggy skin everywhere. Now I have learnt the hard way, been going to the gym doing weight for a year with cardio and some boxing training. I came down to around 190 pounds but look way better than before.

This oddly reminds me of the movie trope: Underdog trains with what he has, and all he has is barely the basics and has to work twice as hard. Meanwhile the antagonistic has the state of the art, best of the best money can buy, ultimately workout equipment that's been calibrated to a percent of a percent margin of error. I'm thinking movies like the Rocky series(Rocky 5 comes to mind), Cars 3, Karate Kid, stuff like that
