    regarding the YT premium revenue being so much higher on long streams, there was a bug that meant anyone who downloaded a vod with YT premium counted as a full 100% watchtime *premium* view for that whole stream, *no matter how long it was* and it worked multiple times, *no matter how many times you downloaded the video.* the spiffing brit highlighted this 'exploit' and showed you could earn thousands and thousands of dollars off this, and it only got fixed within the last 12 months I think. I wonder how much extra revenue was generated on the long streams due to this glitch? maybe not much, as I don't think people were intentionally exploiting it for very long before it got patched

    One thing I can say about the live streams that may not be considered concerning their success is that Linus is very engaging off the cuff. So, they're better than your average live streams. And, usually he goes off on tangents during these build streams that are actually really interesting, whether it's about his painting experience or his time at NCIX or inside views on what it's like to run a business. It's engaging, because it's just a guy that knows his stuff so well that it just flows out of his mouth easily and with lots energy. And usually that tends to happen in the middle. I could see it probably tapering off at the end as things are focused more on wrapping up the actual build. People aren't watching solely to see a computer get built; they're watching to the see the guy building it.

  • @aniruddhavispute

    @aniruddhavispute

    yeah, this is so perfectly explained. so a plain pc build video would never get such interest. But it is Linus and his tangents that do the trick. even if it's a threadripper build or some wild custom watercooled build, at some point of time, you do loose interest in a stream. And that's basic human brain tendency. You can't focus on one thing for very long. But that's where Linus takes us away from the build, talks about some of his experiences, some of the fun or insightful stuff about his life, or even about some components that make these streams exciting. Often times, I've put on his streams while working and haven't even watched the complete video, I listen more. and if I hear something specific about the video, then I switch the tab to see what he's talking about.

    Something I noticed with premium, I made a graph a while ago comparing premium revenue to premium average view duration, and while the results are for the most part pretty consistent, there was one massive outlier which just so happened to be the only music cover I did. For every hour of a normal video a premium viewer watched, I got $0.02±0.0015, but for this one outlier video that number was $0.26 per hour watched.

    I can attest to the algorithm thing. I've been binging some LTT content recently. I would pick several videos, then kinda just let the algorithm go on it's own. The videos I picked were usually the Intel upgrade stuff (Sarah's is great), some of the crazy build stuff, content more like that. Videos in the 15 minute range, more edited high engagement compact content stuff. After picking several videos, then letting YT do it's thing, it would always end up taking me to a build stream. Every single time. It would take 6-8+ videos to do it. But at the end, I was always ending up at a build stream. And it is consistent, been binging probably last 2 weeks and everyday, more than once a day, once I let YT pick on it's own I end up at a build stream. One day it probably did it 5 or 6 times. It's just interesting how YT was steering me towards that content, especially when it was so different than the first several videos I picked.

    I love seeing James on here more often. And I love watching him SNIPE the sponsor call-outs!! I think the behind the scenes angles and story lines like "Who has the best PC at LTT" is a big reason why the videos even did so well. MORE MORE MORE.

    Honestly its really nice to see a real breakdown of how my premium membership helps. It makes me glad to actually pay knowing that the revenue, at least in some part, goes to creators.

    The explanation for livestreams and youtube premium is that when a premium user downloads a livestream to watch later, youtube counts the whole video as watched and it pays as if the user watched the whole thing, even if they never end up watching it

    I can't say I would expect that a statistically significant number of people are downloading entire livestreams to watch offline. More than likely it's just premium members leaving streams on in the background while they do something else, as that's something I personally do a _lot_

    you guys should do a 24hr extreme live stream with all the crew getting a slot to show case any subject they like. this could be an annual challenge. the winner would be the ltt staff member with the most engagement during their stream. this could then be made a subject on how much money did we make from a 24 hr live stream on a follow up video haha this could be an annual event even allowing the public to participate and be in the audience...

    Of all the channels I'm subscribed to, and there a lot of them, LTT is the only one where I will allow all of the sponsor messages to play out in full. They're just so creative and yet also comically cheeky when it comes to their segues that I just have to give them the credit they deserve. And now I have the LTT Labs content to look forward to soon aswell. Thanks to all you guys at LTT. Salute. 🍸✌🏼🕊️

    @@Aliquis.frigus I love Jay Foreman stuff, Map Men especially, but he doesn't post anything near the number that LTT does. Plus, his sponsored ad spots are on a different level, so much so that I don't even think of them as ads.

    I guess it goes to show the balancing act of sponsorships, money that goes into making a video, & money gained from us viewing ads regarding LTT profits.
