Unironically that's how a lot of meetings are in china, I once went for work and once the "formal" meeting was done (which was like 15 minutes of pretty much nothing on an office) we were invited to this place with like 20 girls in bikinis, 2 per person sitting next to you or even on the laps of some of these chinese men, unlimited drinks and food (amazing food btw) and these super serious chinese men got drunk af and started actually discussing about the bussiness like that; seemed like they cared more about how you were socially than anything else. I've heard very similar stories from other friends that have done bussiness in china.

I worked at MSI in Europe. We got an ad in from HQ where a girl in bikini like clothes holding a mainboard would be pictured with the text "Buy me! And get a free me!". You would get a free graphics card. You have no idea how hard EU HQ fought to not have to use the campaign. Imagine all the ads that didn't make it when you see these!

That would not roll in most parts of Europe. The worst ad I've ever seen on TV was for Coca Cola in Brazil, where a girl's bikini top falls off and two bottles of coke spring out directly into the mouths of two dudes. Yuck.

I got the same feeling watching it with you, felt like seeing a lost relative that past or you havent seen in over 20years. This was our youth and it was awesome to be a part of it, as it was Golden humble times. Feels like a completely different realm we were living in back then as so much has changed in the world. Poor kids, having to go camping every year, i hated camping so much as a kid, I never took my kids till my wife suggested it (she'd never been either just heard about it from mums at school), I said are you sure?????? she hated it so did my kids, once was enough, and it was just a tent in a caravan park next to the car, no hiking involved. lucky me never had to do that again.

This is the kind of retrospective that makes me painfully aware of how old I am. I actually have vivid memories of my life before personal computers, the internet, and smartphones. It feels like what it would be like to have lived a life that encompassed the invention of the printing press, the adoption of spoken language, and the discovery of fire. I think he mentioned on the wan show during the ai or not segment how he has a really good memory for anything he's said - damn impressive.

I can really respect LTT's willingness to dig at themselves while digging at others, even though the LTT short was far from the worst. I remember growing up with some of these commercials, and saying they were "tone deaf" was probably the most accurate thing I've heard in a long time.

That pole position commercial was actually fantastic. If I had seen that as a kid, I can guarantee, I would have wanted it. They knew what they were doing.

OMG I actually had that Motorola phone from the LTT ad at the end! from what I remember it was a decent enough phone for daily use, but we never did get any attachments for it cause they went for around $300 USD in my area, and even then the attachments just weren't that appealing of an idea

The story about Ellen Feiss (Apple Commercial) is that she hadn't planned to be in a commercial that day - her friend was on site for an audition. She was also dealing with severe allergies. So she was thrown in at the last minute. The "Do you really want a clone" commercial was produced for MDG, a computer (and general tech financing company). And yes, they are a giant, exploitive scam along the lines of payday loans but with more steps.

@@Gatorade69 She gave her real name. A quick Google search shows an interview with Brown University's College newspaper explaining the whole thing. She was apparently 15 at the time and friends with the son of the ad's director (the son features in a separate ad). Because 2022 was the 20-year anniversary of the ad, there were also a bunch of retrospectives last year catching up with her that appeared in publications like WIRED and Cult of Mac.
