I STOLE the AirPods Design, and improved it! (+ free download)
Ғылым және технология
I am deeply concerned about the prevailing trend in the consumer electronics industry. Most gadgets are designed without repairability in mind, unlike the durable technology of the past that seemed built to last. It is troubling to see design choices like non-replaceable batteries, glued-in components, and a lack of transparency in public information leading to the rise of 'fast electronics.' In response, I (Ken Pillonel) am taking on a significant project to demonstrate how one of the most popular gadgets today - Apple's AirPods Pro - could have been easily made repairable with minimal effort. My primary objective is to encourage consumers to be more mindful of their choices and to motivate manufacturers to prioritize sustainability.
Building on the success of my previous projects, which included 3D-printed cases for various AirPods models and custom USB-C parts, I am now addressing the demand for more eco-friendly solutions. Instead of offering just outer shells for the AirPods Pro, I took on the challenge of meticulously modeling every single part of the device, essentially 'stealing' the design, and sharing them freely with everyone. These designs have been thoughtfully modified to include screws and nuts, making them easily swappable and repairable - a stark contrast to the original parts, frustratingly glued together with strong adhesives. Considering the enormous number of AirPods Pro units sold, even a small percentage being repairable and extending their lifespan can make a significant impact in reducing electronic waste.
I am thrilled to make these repairable designs available to the public at no cost, encouraging individuals and manufacturers alike to prioritize repairability in their product development. Together, we can work towards a circular economy that not only minimizes electronic waste but also fosters a culture of conscious consumption and responsible tech innovation.

@zumuvtuber

@@ageorgiev89 Yes, companies do this all the time. However, it's awful PR for them to go against their own customers who are asking for repairability, especially when huge organisations like the EU are also making efforts towards that goal. That's pretty much just telling customers to jump ship to another brand.

It is impressive work, but instead of needing more people like this, we should forcing companies like Apple, to just do this in the first place. What’s infuriating is how easy Apple could have made this completely repairable from the get go. They actively chose not to, for profit, instead of the environment, which completely contradicts their “environmental friendly” statements.
@zumuvtuber

@@benwhittle7204 Very true, I agree with you. I just want to clarify that when I wrote "more people" I meant more people in general (including those who work for these companies), not just makers and enthusiasts.

If you could use Hex Screws or Torx screws it would look even cooler. I believe there's Torx in a size similar that are used for pocket knives

The Face ID is a better LiDAR Scanner then the LiDAR Scanner. And I’m sure the Face ID scanner is from iPhone X to 12 the same. I think there are some apps to utilize that scanner like Heges.
nice video and thanks for the files !
Amazing work! This also reminds us how highly skilled engineers work at apple (no hate on them, they follow management requirements)
Nice video man!!!
This is crazy cool, and smart. If only apple had you employed. I did notice one thing I think you could have done, maybe indent the crews a bit and place a plastic or rubber matting to cover up the crew or make a very thin cover or shorts, cheap easy to remove and still reparable. But I'm no engineer so do your best work 👍

Apple have a ton of engineers, they are just paid to make designs that are not repairable.
Tu es le suisse le plus fou que j'ai vu de ma vie 😄🫡 Bravo
This is fantastic, thanks Ken! I successfully got mine apart, aside from the gasket that surrounds the black part being slightly damaged, but this is going to be amazing for those of us who want more flexibility, regardless of whether we're successful or not. Sadly I can't modify my main pair, since they're Magsafe, but that's ok, I'll be happy with this set.
His Kenergy is insane.
WHAT A DUUUDE. Great vid, great intro, 11/10 skills. Dog bless
I fully agree, bring back the screw look! It would be amazing if you could modify an iPhone to have a user removable battery, expandable storage and a headphone jack!
Every revolution starts with someone putting one foot in front of another. It takes the brave to take those first small steps: litigation / inertia / the desire for a peaceful life; there are endless persuasions to leave well alone. It's really something, to start watching a tech walk-through and to end realising you've just watched an act of bravery. Thank you.
