I Put the Pro in AirPods Pro (with Apple's help?!)

Ғылым және технология

OPEN SOURCE: github.com/kenp-io/not-for-ai...
The first and second generations of AirPods made by Apple were given a score of 0 out of 10 by repair specialists at iFixit. A few years later, the Pro version came out, and it still received a 0 out of 10. AirPods are not designed to be serviced. No hardware components can be accessed without damage to the device, making it a consumable/disposable item. Hundreds of millions of devices were sold, each one having three sealed-in batteries. This makes it a total electronic waste disaster.
After the success of Ken Pillonel's previous project, a 3D-printed case and custom USB-C part for the AirPods Gen. 1 and 2 (and the world's first USB-C iPhone), he decided to replicate the project for the AirPods Pro series, due to great demand. The goal was to find a solution that gives a second life to the allegedly unopenable cases, which all face an inevitable end of life because of their built-in battery.
His findings led him to conclude the AirPods Pro cases are easier to open than their non-Pro counterpart, yet it still not guaranteed that it can be achieved without damage.
The proposed solution consists of 2 possibilities:
1. User can open case without damage: they can then replace the dying battery. If the Lightning port is broken, it can also now be replaced. An open-source USB-C replacement part is also part of the project. Users can make it themselves, but more realistically, they can now purchase it. The USB-C part fits the original case by removing a small metal part, no milling required.
2. User can not open case without damage: they can download a 3D-printed replacement part that I designed because the official replacement part does not exist. So, repairs can be made inside, and finally, the 3D-printed replacement part is inserted back in place. The USB-C replacement part is also compatible with the 3D-printed case.
The goal of this project is to maximize the number of successful repairs to minimize the quantity of electronic waste. A replacement battery can be purchased online, but it is the only replacement part available. If a charging port is broken, there is no way to replace it except by getting a replacement part from another device.
Now, Ken decided to sell the USB-C replacement part himself. He realized that 2 million people watched the last video where a similar project is done for the original AirPods, and only a few attempted to repair it as shown. This proved that it is too difficult to build integrated circuits at home, and the only way to have a real impact is to lower the difficulty of repair by making the ready-to-install replacement part available to purchase.

Screws CAN look nice and can still be water resistant. Really wish Apple would stop acting like there’s really any meaningful benefit to gluing everything other than forcing people to not replace batteries, which on airpods is insane to me. Only thing I don’t like about them.

exactly. more screws in the next video ;)

The cost savings (including the speed of manufacturing) is the meaningful benefit. The cost, mainly time, of every time you have to use a screw is massive over millions of units. Not being able to repair the battery easily is likely just a side benefit to them as it forces more people to just get a new one.

  • @arildedvardbasmo490

    @arildedvardbasmo490

@@curtisbme Indeed cost saving is part of it. I have a product on the market with clips - replacing them with screws would 10x the assembly time of the product. However, you can also design clips that can be taken apart - especially with the right bend. Getting that water tight is harder, but possible - rubber seals can do it with tight enough clips, but that, again, adds cost.

It’s amazing that we’ve gotten to a point where with the right dedication and initiative, we can create things to solve problems in ways only massive companies used to be able to do. Injection molding, pcb manufacturing, micro welding, etc is possible for ordinary people now. It’s wild. Such a perfect time for small niches like this.

You are doing god's work truly! Not only giving everybody the chance to learn and replicate this but also offering a way to fix your device if you're not capable of producing the hardware yourself. And making a business of it! Honestly that's amazing. I also really enjoy your videos. No fluff, amazing transitions (the way you smoothly incorporated the sponsored segment *chef's kiss*) and to-the-point storytelling. I hope you continue to make replacement parts for complicated mass-consumer devices like Apple products. You'll have a huge impact and and even bigger wallet with this. (And it's probably good that you're operating out of Switzerland since you have more personal liberties there it seems). Please stay as transparent and noble as you are going forward! Thanks for your hard work.

If you sell these circuits, don't set the price too low. Yes, make them affordable, but don't count your labour and tools out of the price, especially when you share the files to do it for free.
